V&A Al Thani exhibition: the world's most amazing Indian jewellery lights up London

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With the announcement of 400 pieces of the Al Thani Collection up for auction at Chrsitie's in New York this June, I thought it would be a good time to share again my video of the Bejewelled Treasures exhibition at the V&A Museum in London in 2015. The 400 pieces for sale represent but a fraction of the entire collection so enjoy the video which showcases the spectacular Al Thani collection - a dazzling history of the magnificence of Indian jewellery from the 17th century to modern day. This awe-inspiring collection of Al Thani jewels captures the jaw-dropping opulence of the courts of the Mughals, the splendid style of the maharajas, and the beauty that India has inspired in contemporary jewels. From early court jewels and famous diamonds such as the 70ct Idol’s Eye or the 57ct Star of Golconda, the exhibition takes us through time to the early 20th century with outstanding pieces of Art Deco jewels by houses such as Cartier and Mellerio dits Meller, or celebrated designer Paul Iribe. The exhibition culminates in a series of jewels by contemporary masters JAR and Viren Bhagat - reason enough to visit this unique exhibition. A jewellery collection of this calibre is not to be missed as it is a true treasure trove of delights. Read more here: www.thejewelleryeditor.com/eve...

It really is a tragic double edged sword, admiring these priceless magnificent jewels... while there is no denying the exceptional skill required to create them, one simply cannot forget that for hundreds of years, millions of enslaved and starving people slaved away in absolute squallor and died tragic deaths just so that a select few people could swish around all day, every day, playing with priceless jewels (that could have fed, clothed, sheltered and educated hundreds of people, for years!
