    You two are so cute! On the plate packing because each plate is so heavy I would large bubble wrap each plate then tape them together. I would box them up but do a box within a box because of the size and weight. Anything super fragile or very heavy I box within a box. That way should a box get dropped or dented, the contents are usually protected.

    Good to know about the fast recovery! We put the "fragile" labels on for the buyer. At least they know, we tried. As to the carrier, they're going to do what they're going to do. We rarely, rarely have breakage and all of our glass and ceramic items have fragile labels. I've heard many people say though that they've given up on them. But as said, they're for the buyer to know we tried. Thanks Janice!

    You are my doppelganger. Love your passion to care for someone's purchase. The only thing I would do different is use a secondary material around the plates. I always us packing paper on bottom and shoved down on each side and top. This truly fills the void and doesn't allow for movement. It pushes the bubble wrap into the item strengthening it more. Also creates a barrier for the bubble wrap for impact. Great videos. Love watching. Wishing you a blessed 2024.

    You two are so adorable. Good luck on your surgery Mark. You have to wonder who is steering the ship when charity shops dump their stock instead of lowering prices. Yes, Mark looks very dashing with his beard. As for packages being damaged, one reseller that sells pottery and glass items said you have to package everything like they are going to toss it down a mountain and still you end up with broken items. As for snow, we are getting dumped on today and probably tomorrow.

    Thank you for inviting us all into your home and telling us of your challenges. Amazing how Salvation Army doesn't just lower the price and do clean outs. When I pack anything fragile I will use some of the hard foam and brace each corner of the box so that the breakable item is sort of suspended within the box in a sea of other foam and bubble wrap. But honestly it seems it is the luck of the draw as to what might happen to something once it is shipped. Hope Mark's surgeries turn out well with a full recovery. Thank you!

    I sell very few breakables outside of pint glasses and beer steins. However I did sell a donald duck plate a few months back and wouldn't you know it cracked before it made it to the customer. I had some of that same snow you all had, sadly when it warmed back up my sweet lil cat wanted to go roam a bit and we let him because he came a few years back as a stray. Well he got hit and that started this month off terribly. It's good your customer was understanding.

    Thank you! We put labels on the outside of our glassware and ceramic boxes: "Please allow to come to room temperature BEFORE opening." This is to help avoid sudden temperature changes that we believe could contribute to breakage. So far, so good. So sorry to hear about your cat. I lost my childhood cat in a similar situation.

    Hi Vickie & Mark! Happy to see a Vlog ☺ What a fun visit with your sister... I hope to visit my sister in West TN soon. With all that you do, where do you find time to sew? I love to repurpose and with your talent there's so much you can create with all that beautiful material. Can't believe that plate broke! I use a 13x13x8 box when shipping plates and I put a Styrofoam plate in between prior to wrapping each plate in large bubble wrap. If there is a gap between the Styrofoam and plate, I push down on the plate and that flattens the Styrofoam plate to fit perfectly. If they are real heavy, after the final layer of all included bubble wrap, I cut a pool noodle and tape on four sides just incase the box is tossed about. So far nothing has broken. Praying Mark's surgery goes well and for a speedy recovery! Oh, love the beard!

    I don't have much time left but I've been researching for an easy pattern. I usually use styrofoam plates. Hadn't thought of flattening it or perhaps cutting notches into the perimeter. But the plate didn't break because of the foam layer. I use that all the time. It was the hard hit and where it hit that ultimately took out one plate. I so wish I had a larger box that day, say 14" square, not 12". Thanks you so much Judi! Have fun with your sister!

    Hi Vickie & Mark! Enjoyed the vlog format! I sell a LOT of plates. I always small bubble wrap each plate individually and fold the corner of the wrap on each plate like you did with the foam. This essentially creates triple cushion between each plate (on the corners). I do also insert the Styrofoam plate in between each plate (not very top or very bottom) (even if it's smaller than the dinner plate). This then gets sandwiched between 2 pieces of custom cut scrap cardboard that's slightly bigger than the diameter of the plate. I then tape this stack together on all 4 sides. Now I take the stack and wrap with large bubble (all sides). Then it goes in the box with either more large bubble or packing paper (top, bottom and sides if there's a gap). Knock on wood, this has worked really well for me. Sorry about the dry rot on the skirts. At least you figured it out before listing. I once sold a pair of vintage Nike running shoes purchased from an estate sale. Excellent condition, super clean, very little wear on the soles. They fell apart while the buyer was wearing them!! She was super cool about it, like your buyer was. I refunded her fully including shipping. I've now learned to do the bend test, but I really don't enjoy selling shoes or clothes, so I have very little of either in my store. I've had eBay pull down 4 of my items since starting in 2022. Two were the Corning Ware vintage coffee pots. Apparently they were recalled many years ago because the metal band at the top can separate from the pot. One was on the recall list for sure (9 cup) but the other (smaller version-6 cup) was not. eBay said they pulled the listing for the 6 cup out of an abundance of safety, admitting that that particular style wasn't on the recall list.. I had researched how to price base on eBay sold comps. So yes, same situation where some sellers go under the radar. Another item was a pottery bowl made and hand painted in Persia (kind of like Cuba) not allowed to sell items manufactured in that country. The 4th item was counterfeit unopened perfume (again purchased at an estate sale). I had no idea it wasn't the real thing...I've never heard of cornmeal 'mush' but I have eaten fried Polenta. I think it's essentially the same thing. Never with maple syrup, rather as a side with dinner (savory application). 🙂 So sorry about the carpal tunnel and trigger finger. Sending very best wishes to Mark for successful surgeries and a speedy and full recovery!

  • @AvanteAvenue

    @AvanteAvenue

    I've never had to wrap each plate individually but this box was too small in diameter, should have been 14 x 14 and I should have used at least 12 x 12 x 12 high so I could have added more packing at the top and bottom. It took a hard hit near the bottom/side. Thank you for sharing your tips and experiences with recalled items. If only we "knew" about all these things before purchasing to resell. I've learned that thrift stores (ReStore for example) doesn't check anything to see if it's on a recall list before putting out for sale. I saw Polenta in a store yesterday. It wasn't refrigerated like cornmeal mush is. I've had Polenta and it's more like a porridge. Cornmeal mush is firmer and can be sliced to fry. Had some for breakfast again this morning. Yum! Thank you!

    I recently had something break during shipping (the first time in quite a long while--years) and as you said, in retrospect I could see where I should have done something differently. I think when packing a seller sometimes focusses on one thing a bit too much. For me, I was selling something that still had it's original box and inner packaging, and in an attempt to take care of the original box and preserve the inner packaging, I didn't protect the actual items as much as I typically would, and the vintage inner packaging wasn't enough to do the job. Lesson learned for me for sure. I failed to see the forest for the trees. 😉 In your case, though, watching the packaging of those plates it sure looked like they were well-wrapped. I think it was just how incredibly heavy each plate was that may have been the issue. So glad you were reimbursed for the plate and that the buyer was so understanding.

    Thinking back to when I’ve bought plates (It’s been 15 years) they were all in a separate box for each plate. In fact we just moved into a place where we could have a dining room and took the fine china out of the box for the first time! I went to list a skirt I bought from Nordstroms five years age and the elastic had dry rotted!it’s not just old fabric!

    I'm so sorry to hear about Mark's hand! My husband is also suffering from carpel tunnel and "should" get surgery this year but...he does SO MUCH around the house (like you, if I listed everything he does, it would look like I do nothing hahaha - I clean the toilets!! hahahaha). He also helps with my ebay business and it will be really hard when he can't help anymore.

    From what we were told by the doctor, recovery from the carpal tunnel Surgery is only about three weeks. Mark is doing really well. He had his surgery yesterday. The trigger finger surgery will take longer to heal. With that said, considering the alternative to not having it could make things more difficult for your husband. It’s not like they can’t help anymore, they just can’t help for a while. Thank you, Patricia!

    Cornmeal mush... Polenta here in NJ! 😊😊

  • @AvanteAvenue

    I looked it up today to see what was the difference. Apparently polenta is a larger ground corn meal. Polenta doesn’t have to be refrigerated. Cornmeal mush has more water in it and is finer ground and it needs to be refrigerated. I’ve had polenta, but I had it with a spaghetti type sauce. I’ve only ever had cornmeal mush with maple syrup. Similar, yet different. Thank you, Mich!

    6:27 minutes in - YES! We have SNOW! Snowed all night and up till 11:45 a.m. About 6 inches of heavy, wet snow. Pretty but a bugger to drive in. I saw the snow truck and two vehicles slide right off into a farm field. I kept my speed at 34 miles - to slow and the snow would drag you into a slide, go to fast and, well, you're stupid! Glad to be back SAFELY to the house. Now, hubby is snow plowing the drive of our neighbor (always first) then our driveway. Prayers over you both - Mark, may your recovery be without incident and your return to full use quicker than thought, I bring this prayer to you Lord, Amen!

Not much has changed. I estimate the shipping, round up and add enough for box weight and use calculated shipping (Ground Advantage and Priority) but I'll keep your request in mind. For anyhing under a pound, a flat cost of usually $6.95. Thanks Judith!

    Thank you for the vlog. I know these are a lot of work, but I’ve missed your vlogs. I had to smile with the fried mush. True Ohio girl. I made some a couple of days ago w real maple syrup. I never thought of doing that with the air fryer and will have to try that. As far as the eBay pull down, did you tell them about the plug specifically? I think they have remote people working all over the place may be the problem there. Disorganized. Air pillows would probably have prevented the plate from breaking. Just a lesson learned. 😢

  • @AvanteAvenue

    They are, but it’s easier just putting bits and pieces and things that have happened recently rather than feeling like I need to produce video content every single day. That was exhausting. No, I did not tell Ebay about the plug because I wanted to see what they would do. To see if they would catch the issue or not, obviously they did not. Yes, I should’ve had my pillows on the bottom and the top and a larger box to allow for more packing material around the perimeter. I just didn’t have anything larger than 12 inches in width but no excuse for not using 12 x 12 x 12 like I should have. I learned from it. Thank you!

    Thanks for another great Vlog - congrats to both you and Mark for losing weight WooHoo! Hope Mark’s upcoming surgery is uneventful and he heals quickly. In regards to the Mush you showed us, I only see it called Polenta here in Atlanta. I normally use it as a base for savory dishes, like a vegetarian pizza with a little thick tomato sauce. Never even thought to use it fried with syrup (looked yummy). And lastly, I haven’t listed anything this year because I hate taking pictures. I primarily sell handbags and wallets, and it’s very difficult to hold a wallet open with one hand and snap a picture with the other while trying to zoom in and not shake my phone 😂 I’ve tried mounting my phone on a tripod and use a clicker to shoot, but it’s rarely good enough 🙄🤣 Oh well!

    I don't trust ground advantage for REALLY breakable items... The less handling and the quicker it gets there the better. I think the box is too tight for those size plates... I probably would have put it inside another box...

  • @AvanteAvenue

    @AvanteAvenue

    4 ай бұрын

    Yes, for sure the box was too small! As to ground advantage versus priority, I’ve had no issues with ground advantage with the last several hundred pieces I’ve shipped since ground advantage started. My issue was I didn’t have anything larger than 12 in square, so couldn’t even even double box. But as said, I needed a larger box. Thank you, Mich!

    I have to be honest, I was a bit worried about those plates when you packed them. I guess I was mostly concerned that your dishes were 11" and many suggest at least 2 inches, if not 4, distance from box on each side. I was thinking you'd need a bigger box. I might have put small bubble between each plate too but keeping them tight together as you had done should have taken care of that aspect. Sorry the one didn't make it but I'm glad your buyer was good about it. Congrats to both of you on your weight loss---it's hard! (I'm not making any headway at all. 😞) I hope the operation goes well and with as little pain as possible.

    As a professional packer this was packed horribly. There should have been corrugated card board between each plate in addition to the foam. Then bubble wrap. Box in box with at least 3 inches around. Your boxes should be rated to 300 lbs.

  • @AvanteAvenue

    @AvanteAvenue

    Ай бұрын

    Well, I won’t agree that it was horrible. I use 32 ECT boxes all the time. I’ve shipped hundreds of plates and never felt the need to separate with cardboard. My mistake was in not having enough space around the plates. These are exceptionally large diameter plates and I did not have the 2 to 3 inches that I normally have. That was my mistake. 300 pound rating? I don’t think so. And just to clarify, I’ve never ever referred to myself as a professional packer. But I am pretty darn good at it and have shared hundreds of pack to ship videos and shipped thousands of fragile items with great success. There is no such thing as perfect.
