UWS’s New IGS Automated Side Loader

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

UWS’s long time body builder who has previously just built front loaders and roll offs for the company (in addition to body transfers, modifications, CNG systems, etc.) recently tried their hand at a side loader. It definitely has some potential but also has a number of flaws too that go along with being a prototype. It worked halfway decent on greenwaste, however you will notice the cart starts to tip to dump very early resulting in some contents dumping on the side of the body and the arm itself. Apparently it was much worse when running trash a few days prior. Being a single blade push-out, the packer is extremely tall which results in a severe lack of hopper space when the blade is extended. The overall speed of the hydraulic system is less than ideal and an improvement would not only speed things up in general, but would also minimize spillage and reduce the amount of time the blade remains extended for. On the positive side however, I will say I was impressed by the overall simplicity of the design. As great as the company’s Amreps are they’re very complex and contain a ton of different parts in just the arm alone, not to mention regular issues with arm and gripper components cracking due to stress. In the end the arm design resembles an Australian side loader which has proven itself for decades over there, with the main exceptions being two lift cylinders instead of a hydraulic motor and a multi-piece arm. A number of issues sure, but I think it definitely has some potential.

This arm looks like the J.J. Richards trucks here in Australia.

3:48 definitely shows the dumping angle issue. I wish the arm dumped much farther in the hopper, and that it was closer to the cab. There seems to be a ton of space in there not being used. I wonder how the arm will hold up over time, considering how thin it is. The grippers definitely need to be reworked. I wish they put Autoreach-type grippers on there, something a lot wider. The 90s bounced around way too much, and I'm sure plenty fell in off camera. That being said this is awesome to see! I love seeing the wheel be reinvented when it comes to side loaders. Please keep us updated on how this truck progresses and grows over time! Great video!

Brian Spencer yeah the driver said whenever he tried revving it the increased speed resulted in him losing carts in the hopper. Thanks!

Super excited to finally see a full video of this truck. Definitely not perfect, but with some changes this could be a really great product. I’ve always been a fan of the Aussie style ASL. I personally think they are some of the best designed ASLs out there. So it’s cool to see a truck with a similar style. But damn this is nowhere near as fast as there’s. The hopper reminds me of the EZ pack ASLs hopper. Looks big, and looks like it would be great for a heavy route. But it’s actually the complete opposite. When the packer blade is extended on the EZ packs there is really no room in the hopper. Nonetheless, great work, keep it up!

HunterDawg 89 funny you mention that, it’s actually quite similar to EZ Pack’s ASL as both have extremely oversized packer cylinders. Thanks!

That lifter looks awfully alot like the JJ Richards Engineering style grab lifter used by JJ Richards here in Australia, however there are a number of wear issues associated with the arm knuckle design, let alone the single ram geared toothed grab mechanism. Both of which are flawed here in Aus, let alone with the American variety of carts. I gather this is a prototype, so its not a bad first crack, but there are a number of changes to the lifter/grab and packer I would recommend.

Seriously, what is so hard about asking for a superior pak arm, adjusting the grippers (making them slightly bigger) and running it on a truck? Surely that would be less expensive than coming up with a new concept, building it, and testing it, just to find out that it is completely flawed. Why is (pretty much) every American-based waste company trying to over complicate something that doesn't need to be complex. Arm goes out, grabs bin, arm comes in, arm goes up, bin is empty, arm comes down, arm goes out, lets go of bin, arm comes in. Nowhere in there is having 3 pivot points, swiveling, having the arm in an upside down V shape mentioned or needed. Amrep have done well, Labrie have done well with the Automizer (they also made the 'cool arm' so they aren't totally excluded). Other than that, I cannot think of another well made, efficient, simple design that works and is widely used. Anyway, just wanted to have a little rant because this truck infuriated me beyond belief. Its a JJ Richards arm but worse... They made a flawed version of an already flawed design... Sorry... I'm really angry at this...

Interesting truck to say the least. I wonder how much weight that little arm can handle. The packer reminds me of a curbtender. Hope UWS can get more innovative with other ASLs down the road. If they like this prototype, do you think they will produce more of them?

Man I wanted to love this truck but I hope they’re working with this as a prototype and continue tweaking it. Agreed there’s a lot of potential. Sincerely hope they work out the kinks. Any idea why they wanted to go with cylinder driven over a rotary actuator like the legit Aussies? That’s what they use for a good reason as demonstrated here ahha

Igs seems to love to go the route of cylinders over rotary actuators, hence the shitty tippers on basically all of our rear loaders. Why that is I don’t know

Where was this at? I feel like i recognize the clip at 6:40. All around a solid video of a solid truck. I feel as if this has a lot of potential, and with the skill that IGS possess, it will reach that potential. The pairing with the LR looks stellar imo. Great video

If you’re gonna try and replicate an Aussie design, you’re better off importing the proper thing instead of doing a cheap knockoff . That’s just painful to watch, even our slowest operating trucks would leave this for dead. Nice video though, did find it entertaining :)
