UVC Germicidal Bulb - DANGEROUS But Useful Ultraviolet Light

Ғылым және технология

In this video I review this UVC ultraviolet lamp/bulb and explain how it works, if it can kill viruses, if it produces ozone and whether or not that's all a good idea. I go over the risks and benefits of owning one of these lights and talk about some of the things it's helpful for.

Lesson learned. These dam things are powerful. But you don't realize it till later.😎

I got an old xenon bulb from my dad, he salvaged it from some sort of old broken machine. So I tried to turn it on with a sketchy Chinese high voltage power supply, the light was very intense. Luckily I only turned it on for short amount of time because my dad saw what I was doing and told me that the bulb probably emits UV light and possibly small amounts of x-rays😅 Luckily I didn’t have any side effects from the UV because my exposure was very brief.

Yes, UVC can only sterilise things it comes into direct contact with, a bit like how water can only wet things it comes into contact with. This is why the ozone-producing UVC lamps such as the one in my video can be a bit more effective because the ozone spreads throughout the whole room, onto shaded areas, under beds and in places the light doesn't reach. But ozone has its own risks too.

  • @scootermom1791

I've been reading some scholarly articles about UVC light and found out the light doesn't even penetrate dust! So surfaces have to be wiped down, to begin with, for it to be effective. Same with Hydrogen peroxide. You have to spray it on an already clean surface and leave it for several minutes before it effectively kills germs. Like this guy said, go with the UVC + ozone option.

I think it's important to note that a lot of the newer LED UVC bulbs sold on Amazon are a scam and don't emit any UVC. I got an LED one and it didn't register on my UVC detector and it did not produce any smells either. Later I bought a mercury gas UVC bulb similar to yours and it's the real deal. LED UVC bulbs seem to have a poor track record.

That has been my experience as well. I've tested a number of "UVC" led sterilising products from Amazon that were outright scams. What's especially distasteful about that is that these give people the false belief that they have sterilised their countertops/vegetables/sinks when they have done nothing at all. And that's creating a health risk.

If you want to crank the danger level to 11 get a 253/185nm lamp. The 253 gives off the germicidal light like you expect from a germicidal bulb, but the 185 breaks apart the oxygen in the air and makes ozone.

I've actually got this same bulb; Coospider. The amount of Ozone it outputs isn't actually enough to properly shock a room- you'd have to have the bulb running for 12-24 hours to get the amount of ozone needed to kill odors instead of just temporarily masking it. Ozone also inhibits UVC, so you actually get less UVC radiation with ozone as opposed one that's been doped with ozone-blocker.

You could put them on an automatic timer too, though if it's in a crawl space I would run it for like an hour or two a day to keep the ozone concentration up, and make sure you put enough lights in to give full coverage, I'd suggest having one light every 20-25 feet or so, you need a lot of power in such a moist and dirty environment. I'll bet it will control the rats too lol. That or you'll just have a bunch of blind rats bumping around🤣.

It's my understanding that first, uvc light can't penetrate dust or dirt. Hidden mold wouldn't be affected by the light because the surfaces that are keeping it hidden would not be penetrated. And second, the closer the uvc light is to the bacteria, virus or fungi, the more effective it is. It appears that distances more than 5 feet from the light aren't affected by the light as shown in other videos on KZread.

Every germicidal lamp on the market recommends to vent the room for 30-60 mins after using the lamp because it creates ozone, and it's harmful to breathe. Safest bet is to get a lamp with a wavelength between 240-280 nm, anything below 240 nm will create ozone. However, many UV bulbs will have fluctuating wavelength, so even if it's supposed to be above 240 nm, it still may drop below 240 and create ozone. A rule of thumb, always vent the room after using UV lamps.

@@Roos-Reviews The main con I find with the simple timer versions without remote control is that you can't go to the room before the timer ends, you still have to wait for it to expire and that can be problematic if you forgot some important item like a phone or medicine or in case of emergency. I don't have any timer UVC lamp by the way, but only E27 ones and I either put them in place of the standard lightbulb if I want to sterilize or deodorize an entire room or in a ordinary table or desk lamp if I want do treat individual items. And in that late case I use a remote control socket. In either case I always put a warning sign on the door telling that there's a harmful UV lamp in operation inside the room and not to open the door and when I'm running it in lieu of the standard lightbulb, obviously the room light switch is controlling the germicidal lamp, so I also put a second warning sign telling not to try turning the light on like we're all used to, because it will hurt your eyes.

UVA and UVB are used on human skin to try to resolve cases of eczema and psoriasis but UVC isn't used suggesting it's too dangerous although it's shorter wavelength would mean less penetration into the skin than UVA and UVB.Humans aren't adapted to UVC as it all gets absorbed in the Stratosphere. The main one we encounter is UVA but some UVB gets down to the surface particularly in the Tropics .

I have a pendant lamp with a single bulb, today I put one in it and after doing some research I found out that these lights are perfect for plant growth, so I thought it would be a good idea to buy a UV bulb and put it next to the others two normal bulbs but what I'm asking you now is…will it negatively affect me in any way? Cheers

Being in the same room with the bulb on would cause skin, eye, lung and possibly mucous membrane damage. There are LED bulbs intended for growing plants and they are safe to be around and quite affordable too. Can you buy some of those instead? The light itself will kill small bugs if they are directly exposed to it for long enough and the light will also keep mold from growing on surfaces it shines on. The ozone gas produced by the light kills mold in the air where light doesn't reach. I've been using the same lamp in my basement (15 minutes per day) for 3 years to keep the mold away.

They need to put a warning on all these lamps that really stands out, before someone plugs it in for the first time just to see if it works and they haven't read the instructions yet. I stared for a minute or two at mine, thank goodness mine has a motion detector on it and helped limit the exposure. I had no idea these things could hurt your eyes or skin. I looked at mine about an hour ago, as of right now my eyes feel fine. I'll update tomorrow. As for the smell, the place smells pretty bad at the moment and I'm airing it out. Is it possible to have ultraviolet rays irradiated inside a box with fans pumping air into and out of the box? Contaminated air is pumped into the box, sterilized by the UV rays, then pumped out of the box to the room where the box is located. The advantage are: 1. people can safely be in the same room with the box without the risk of being exposed to harmful ultraviolet light. 2. you can use the air-conditioner normally without worrying about temperature or circulation of air. 3. you can safely be in the room without the risk of getting infected by COVID-19 or other airborne viruses. The air inside the room is constantly sterilized by the box. The box should be small, preferably portable. Such a box does not sterilize surfaces, only the air inside a room. Surfaces should be sterilized normally with desinfectant and cloth. Right now there is no way to safely sterilize the air inside a room. You have to open the windows to ensure good circulation of air. But during the winter and summer you need to close the windows and use the air-conditioner to have an ameniable temperature inside the room. Most air-conditioners simply recirculate the existing air inside the room, instead of pumping clean air from outdoors. If someone in the room is infected and shedding viruses into the air, the air gets more and more contaminated. But a UV box that sterilizes the air while allowing the presence of people and the use of air-conditioner could be the solution.

@@Roos-Reviews Thank's for the reply... More than a year later 😂 I just got a developing tank for photographic film and its lid comes with a hole that allows liquids (But also air) to pass whilst keeping light out, otherwise it would ruin the film inside. According to a video from Technology Connections it's because some sort of clever maze is molded inside the lid of the developing tank. So I suppose now that air purifiers come with similar designs to allow air to pass through whilst keeping harmful UV-C rays inside.

The UVC bulb in my video will cause severe eye and skin damage if exposed for even just ten minutes. On the other hand, UVB and UVA bulbs are widely used for tanning and are much less damaging than UVC bulbs. Many tanning bulbs actually have UVC filters to block the UVC from reaching our skin because it is too dangerous. I don’t know why you are disputing this. It’s a very simple and widely understood science. This UVC bulb will definitely burn human skin and eyes. We are exposed to UVB and UVA every time we walk in the sun and we don’t become blind or suffer severe skin blistering every day. The Earth’s atmosphere blocks the majority of UVC from reaching us. If it did not block any UVC , we would all have to live underground otherwise we would die within a short time.
