UVA Students: "Too Many White People"

Following the release of a viral video where a minority student told white students there were "too many white people" in the Multicultural Student Center, YAF visited the University of Virginia to ask students: should white people be allowed in spaces like the MSC?

You think it’s a joke but it’s the actual truth. As a teacher, it is a policy in the school to not use our textbooks because they are too white and Eurocentric. All we do is cover “culturally relevant“ materials. So, instead of Thomas Jefferson, we talk about Lizzo.

If I praise TJ, they will call me a white supremacist...the word white supremacy is used everyday in my school. I have a family. My family is far more important than “saving” a few students that have already been indoctrinated to believe white supremacy is the reason for everything bad in this world. Take that rebel shit elsewhere, I’m just going with the flow.

No the kids have been this retarded since the mid 60s.. They grow up some stay left some move right like always. The difference is. The media blows it up so we think its new and worse than ever before. Where they used to keep it hushed or at least brief on the media in the past. This is a result of social media being seen by everyone now and not just the youth. We allow it because whether we like it or not you have to learn from life. And life teaches conservative values naturally such as cherish life. Money doesnt grow on trees family means more than money. Tradition creates stability in families. Etc etc etc. School just teaches you how to learn. How to tolerate crackpots because they are everywhere. How to differentiate if someones crazy for their ideals or they are sane but accept crazy ideals. And the college professors are who i mean. Mediary school middle school even highschool are the calm before the storm. The lefty professors know life teaches conservative values. So they challenge them. Some are insane lunatics. But some are playing devils advocate and its not a bad thing. Conservatives do need to be more in the colleges obviously. The left has become to comfortable living free range. Time for us to set up a henhouse. Thats all.

I find it absurd that young people today are demanding the same segregation that their grandparents fought so hard to get rid of! Talk about two steps forward and 5 backwards and all the while these morons dont see this as the pure racism that it is! The two biggest dangers in college today is thinking and feeling! If a college student comes up to you and starts the conversation with either "I feel" or "I think" do yourself a favor and run away as fast as you can!

Nothing could be further from the truth to my point! Might want to take a rain check your own state/frame of mind. Dont be consumed with their downfall and automatically assume everything someone says is directed at someones race. We need to get back to the state of mind that we are ALL Americans first, regardless of the color of our skin. The one thing that makes America great is the fact we are not all the same color and that we have such a wide diversity of cultures and people. Would be a very boring place if we all looked alike, talked and thought the same way with the same opinions...;)

@Jay O’Dowd Only if you change the meaning of the word which the left tend to do very well. I recall a time when "liberal" meant something completely different than what the left mutilated and turned it into. So NO diversity does not inherently divide! At least not based on the true meaning of the word! Diversity by Definition: "the state of being diverse; variety." or "a range of different things.". Neither of which have anything in common with the notion it divides but rather to describe the difference of things! Humans are what divides, much like Humans, not guns kill people!

It's not a "multi cultural" space if white ppl are less accepted. How are people supposed to feel accepted and included when you have to take count of colors to ensure there aren't too many of a certain color? If there even can be too many people perceived as "white", the name needs to be changed to "the poc room". Could you imagine if some light skinned person stood up and said there's too many black people in here taking it over and whites and light skinned don't feel safe in here.???? Why do people claim to feel safe in one room but not in any other part of a full university? There's no extra security. Why are students claiming to not feel safe on campus at all? How many white people were actually in the mcs at the time of that girl's statement? The camera conveniently diesnt show. How many actual white ppl were there vs how many ppl perceived to be white.? How many people were in the room all together? A multicultural space where everyone should be welcome and not discriminated because of your race, and their going to force a racial head count before you can chill there. What nasty irony. That girl is never gonna recognize her own racist words too. People saying she had a point don't see the nasty irony either.

When you hear someone say "we need to be more mindful..." you know they are a postmodernist ideologue. Also, it is a multicultural center, not a multiracial center, so the only way for you to say that the center is primarily intended for minorities is if you say that all white people have the same culture, which is complete nonsense. There are plenty of minority cultures within groups of white people. Also, when you put "multi" in the name of a center, that means that it is intended for all people, not just minorities. Had they named it the minority racial center, which is what it is in practice, the only controversy would be that it sounds a whole lot like segregation. Another peculiar aspect of this is: who would go to a student center? Why waste your time sitting in a random room with random people on campus? Don't those students have classes to go to, lunches to eat, or homes to go to? Seems to me like a colossal waste of time to go to any student center, unless there is a specific activity to do.

Are you actually kidding? I have friends who go to this college. This is SO infuriating! I’m so tired of race division! The terms “white people” and “people of color” is making a very us vs them mentality. This is a disgusting thought process, you are a HUMAN! Not black, not white, not Asian, not middle eastern, you are HUMAN. Your CULTURE is important, but you COLOR isnt! Constantly pushing the race scale one side or the other will ALWAYS cause problems! If you want to stop racism, you have to not even acknowledge race. Acknowledge culture, and individuality, but COLOR ISNT IMPORTANT.

I am so glad I went to college when I did. When people were opinionated but we had conversations. Safe places? Today’s campus’s are like the movie PCU. It’s amazing how college isn’t necessarily as valuable as it used to be. Kids are graduating not able to find the jobs or pay they want and heavily in debt.

I am disgusted by the conduct of the young lady in this viral video. Sick to my stomach! I’m gonna say it plain as day: what she is suggesting is racist and discriminatory to white people. Plain and simple. This being black history month makes this video especially heinous. Did our ancestors really struggle, suffer and die for us to turn around and do the same thing to others?! My heart is in pieces right now 😔.

I thought we fought against all segregation because all people are created equally. Having spaces is the modern terminology for the word segregation. How many generations did that take to want what was fought against??? Multicultural...did you know that there is a myriad of different races and cultures that are white and so these in themselves are also multicultural? The dictionary definition is thus: Multiculturalism is a situation in which all the different cultural or racial groups in a society have equal rights and opportunities, and none is ignored or regarded as unimportant. So it's a multicultural space which means ALL people of ALL races and ALL cultures should be permitted. And seriously. This ideology of "this is my space because of...and that is your space because of..." needs to stop because it is a dark ages mentality.

When I was in college, the cafeteria had unofficial areas that different groups would sit in. There was the preppy section by the windows, the "hood" among the booth tables where the black students tended to congregate, and so on. My own little circle (which was indeed "multicultural", btw), had our favorite corner, but it wasn't about feeling safe, or being crowded out of the good spots, it was about habit. People like to sit with their friends, and if you have a particular area where you usually sit, you can find your friends more easily. If, when you entered college, you made friends with older students, you would sit in their preferred spot, and thus a tradition is born. In four and a half years of college, I don't think I sat in the eastern half of the cafeteria more than twice. I guess my point is that if you don't designate special spaces for certain people, they'll sort themselves out. Who needs or wants to invade? Especially in a setting like college, where there isn't really any "second class seating." Nearer the windows is farther from the drink machines. It all balances out.

In Ireland, you'd literally have to sign an agreement where you cannot be racist/sexist/mention the asylum seekers/etc, before you are able to start with your studies. It's fucking pathetic. These groups tend to form naturally, unless pressured from the top - ya know what I mean -. Anyhow, I've had multiple arguments with open minded tutors about these issues in one of these colleges, to which they do agree - in private ofc - that it's a slide to the gutter for the future "workforce", not to think critically, and to have the need to sign a sort of nda not to openly disagree/even mention one or multiple groups on the premise is a huge con in the long run.
