Utpal Chatterjee All 3 Odi wickets | Debut at age 30

#indiancricket #birthday
Perhaps not unexpectedly, Utpal Chatterjee's selection at the age of 30 for his first ODI came in for a lot of criticism. His detractors said the place could have gone to a much younger man while others openly expressed doubts whether he was deserving of a place in the national side. But the left-arm bowler, who is a fairly big turner of the ball in helpful conditions and can be steady when conditions favour the batsman, was determined to make his presence felt. He started off well by taking 1 for 28 off ten overs against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup match at Sharjah. Against sterner opposition, Chatterjee proved his mettle by taking 2 for 35 off eight overs against Pakistan, his victims being Moin Khan and Ghulam Ali. But he was harshly treated by the New Zealand batsmen in the first ODI the visitors played the following season, conceding 54 runs off 8.5 overs and was not considered again. However he continued to play with much success for Bengal and touched peak form in the 1999-2000 season when he took 52 wickets in the Ranji Trophy, setting a new Bengal record and in the process inching towards the 300 wicket mark in the competition. He was appointed as Bengal coach for the 2008-09 season.

Along with Anil Kumble, if he played T20 ckt today he would have been a rockstar. He was very economical and handy with the bat as well. Much like Axar or Jaddu of present era...it's due to regional politics of Indian ckt that a gem like him didn't have much chances.

@@sagnikchaudhuri4142 Sourav Ganguly got the chance because of Jagmohan Dalmiya's backing, it's a different issue that he capitalised his chances only to cement his place in the team. In 1991 he got the chance on merit and form. As Bengal won Ranji trophy the previous season and Sourav was among the principal contributors for Bengal to win the prestigious domestic tourney. But that time Azhar played dirty politics to sideline him for 4 years after playing just one game for India in Australia. In 1996 in England Sourav didn't have that much success in domestic season so that he could make the Indian team. But that time he has the backing of Jagmohan Dalmiya, the all in all of BCCI that time. Know the facts first, then comment.

@@soumikchatterjee1827you are 💯 correct. Even after having so much backing, betting master azhar had tried his level best in the late 90s to spoil Dada's career. I remember even after having splendid numbers he was rarely allowed to bowl. It took someone like Dada to crush betting master azhar and come out victorious. Compared to that Utpal Chatterjee had little or no chance in front of that devil.

He had been consistently top wicket taker in Ranji trophy for couple of years(4-5 years) then only the notorious Mumbai lobby allowed him to play for the national squad at his 30, as if the selection was his consolation prize. First Sourav Ganguly then IPL liberate Indian cricket talents, back then some moron Dungarpur had to decide who will play for India or who will not.

Anybody who followed domestic cricket back then knows Utpal Chatterjee was far better than Venkatapathy Raju on any surface. But, Raju might have some unholy alliance with the then captain Azhar. After Azhar came Sachin and India even saw low grade Nilesh Kulkarni. By the time Saurav became the captain Utpal Chatterjee was already aged. India could've got another match winner along with Kumble. India always missed the second spinner along with him.
