Hello Rafael, thanks for the videos, I got a lot of motivation watching them! I found your channel when I got the newsletter from the SwissAlps team. I think the lower VO2max value was resulted due to the resistance of the snow. If you choose 'trail running' mode, your VO2max result will be corrected because it is harder to run on a rugged terrain - and on snow it is much more harder to run but unfortunately there is no option like "snow run'. A typical week for me (46 yr, with wife and 2 kids, duty time in abnormal distribution): MON 12hr work, no workout, just some walking TUE afternoon run 10-18 km WED 24hr work, no workout (my rest day...) THU 10-20km run in the morning FRI no work, usually crosstraining day: cycling 4-5 hr (80-90km/1000mD+) and on the weekend 15-25km run, some cycling or hiking with the family. If the weather is rainy, I use the crosstrainer (elliptical) at home for an interval training. In the winter less cycling, more indoor training, in the summer some outdoor swimming.

Another great film Rafael. That race looked amazing! Regarding training/work/family, one thing I found from my years in Ironman racing was that difference between us AGers and the pros was not the ability to train, it was having the time for proper recovery. That makes a massive difference IMO. I've gone for a different tactic this year, instead of training endlessly for the big races, I put in a 50km race every month and just tend to lurch from race to race and that gets me to the bigger races. It's an expensive way to train but every time I write a plan, it goes sideways with work, family and injury very quickly. My 9yr old has swimming, piano, Korean lessons, athletics club and maths club, plus we do parkrun on Saturdays. It's a full on life and it's me that always has to adjust but that's the life of being a responsible Dad! It's a team effort. I have a race this coming Saturday in Cornwall, 72km. Training has been 'less than ideal' but that's situation normal. 😂 I am hitting the turbo a lot more lately though as my 58yr old body just can't handle the big run volume these days.

Awesome thanks a lot for your insight Ian! Interesting about the recovery. Maybe they also have access to infrastructure and have the time to carry out optimal recovery. On my (our?) end even finding the time for optimal recovery is difficult 😆 you finish a big block of training or a big preparation race and then go straight back into normal life mode haha Good luck with your upcoming race! Have a good one ! Can’t beat the feeling of getting across that finish line feeling accomplished, having beaten that internal dragon lurking deep in the pain cave and reaching the gold pot that it was protecting 💪

I also planned to backcountry ski but didn't get to do much this winter. I have already done training races in Jura and Spain to try and get some climbing, but waiting for the snow to clear to start getting higher and reccee Swiss Peaks route. It's amazing how you fit the training in around a family, I have kids but they all grew up and left so is much easier for me. Thanks for the great videos! 👍

Hello Rafael great insites , and that race seemed so fun. Completly agree ultra running consumes a lot of hours 😅 I do 4 workouts every week . 2 workouts 70 min before work ( so unfortunatly have tp wake up at 04:00 ) one very long workout on friday (usually wake up before 04:00 🤣) and a short one on Saturday. No time for anaerobic workouts. I do one block which I dedicate for milage and one block which is dedicated just for elevation and than back to milage and so on.Try allwayes to run in the forest and not on roads. Hoping that it will prepare me for summer. Keep updating on your workouts .Best of luck.

Great video on how most of us have to adapt to fit things in with family life. I have to agree with @ianl4518 about the pros having time to recover better so can then afford to increase the volume and intensity. I am up around 5 am to do most of my runs with double days to get in the higher mileage or tubo trainer. Long runs are always the hardest as i work 6 days most weeks so have to get out early on a sunday so I can fit in time and plans with the family. Good to see you geting the strength work in. Hope all the family are well 👍

@@rafaelhidalgo as you show we as parents have to be flexible and adapt our training around family life. I am fortunate in one way that I have a physical job (tree surgeon/arborist) so I am kept active. I just do more recovery and easy runs with one or two focused sessions.

Waw!! You get up early thats tough! At what time do you get to bes to wake up so early? Kudos to you!! Now in spring im doing a lot more forest and mountains but during the winter it was boring roads. The anaerobic works outs killed me in the end. Had a shin splint… still working on getting it better. Thanks for the insights into your training!!

I go to bed no later than 22:00 , and even before around 21:30. At the beginning it was really tough but now it is much better.( just to be clear I do it because I do not have other options🤣) I used to do in the begginng fartleks, intervals, sometimes it ended with injuries so I stoped. I alsow do not do strength workout except sometimes pushouts. I believe that if you change the surroundings a lot than the running does the job, hills, mountaines, crossroad, single trail. I try to use poles twice a week and that strength the upper body. Trail running is not like road running because the surrounding changes it is like big long fartlek and the muscles have to adapt all the time because of the changing ground and vertical angle that changes.
