The crazy punt return definitely wasn't intentional, but letting Caleb immediately score on 1st down right afterwards most DEFINITELY was. 🤷 If you watch the play a few times it becomes BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that Whitt told his defense to just let USC score but not make it look like they "weren't trying at all" so as to not tip the USC offense off. (Aka, you had Utah defenders making leaping potential tackles in the obviously wrong directions so they wouldn't actually hit Caleb, but still make him think they were trying to get him down; and ofc being the selfish stat obsessed idiot that he is, he took that bait hook, line, and sinker and immediately punched it in. 🤷)

It seemed obvious to me that the reason they sent the kicking team out with five seconds was that USC was almost certainly going to take a timeout to try and freeze the kicker…neither announcing pair considered that possibility until after USC’s timeout, which allowed Utah to center the ball and then take a timeout…then take the kick, which the Trojans couldn’t counter…

When I lived in Utah, I used to love listening to Bill Riley on the Utah broadcast and RSL feed. I have followed the team since I moved away and catch them on national broadcasts when I can. I was excited to hear the Riley call. In my time away, and listening to this broadcast, I can’t believe how I ever thought this was a good play-by-play team. The amount of whining and complaining, the homerism. Holy shit. This is excruciating.

As an OKLAHOMA SOONER, I have to say this about OUr radio play by play broadcaster TOBY ROWLAND: When he speaks about OUr SOONERS, he says: WE, US, OUR. He would never refer to OUr offensive line as, “THAT offensive line.” He would never refer to OUr team as THEY or THEM. He would never say, “YOU have lost all the momentum and can YOU get it back.” He would say, “WE have lost the momentum and WE need to get it back.” Toby Rowland would never say, “THEY are bringing the offense back out!” Or, “What are THEY doing?” He would say WE. Even SCOTT MITCHELL, who played Quarterback at UTAH even refers to his own team as THEY and THEM. I know this is the YOU’tes (Utes), but jeez, I have NEVER heard a home play by play announcer refer to the home team as YOU as much as I have even in this short video clip. YOU YOU YOU. And THEY THEY THEY. How about WE WE WE. Or US US US. Or OUR OUR OUR. And hey, SCOTT MITCHELL, have a little more faith in YOUR team. At the end of the game, the game in which UTAH was leading 31-26 with 2:08 left in the 4th QTR and punting to pin USC deep in their own territory, you said afterwards, “It was looking REALLY UGLY here for Utah.” Really, a 5-point lead with 2:08 left in the game is REALLY UGLY? Hell, I thought I was listening to either an unaffiliated independent radio broadcast, or worse, the USC radio broadcast. Maybe BILL RILEY and SCOTT MITCHELL should visit NORMAN, OKLAHOMA, take a trip down here to OUr neck of the woods, and see how WE do it here in OKLAHOMA. Maybe YOU will learn to represent YOUR Utes a little better.
