Utah Jazz 5-Out Offense Breakdown

Спорт

The Utah Jazz have the best record in the Western Conference and the number 2 offense in the NBA and are rolling along like usual. We have heard this story before, nothing new right? Oh, except that the Jazz traded away their 3 best players and was supposed to be tanking but instead decided to run a modern 5-Out offense that helped eliminate them the past few postseasons and are blending good NBA players into a great early season start.

Without a star's ego to feed. Like Kyrie ignored 10 of his coaches play calls in a game. KD and Harden want to iso. None of that let's an offense like this thrive. Even further back - reportedly when Mike Dunleavy gave Magic Johnson his playbook to learn, Magic gave it back, saying HE was the Laker's offense.

I wonder how similar Utah's offensive system is to Boston's. You mentioned Will Hardy's flare screens, and they both run 5-out fast paced with lots of DHOs and quick passes. Love the breakdown as always!

Looks similar to the Warriors offense with the Splash Brothers. Also, all the off-ball movement and flares remind me of watching tiki-taka soccer, or positional play. Constant rotating to disorient the defense

I feel this type of fast pace unselfish style of team basketball was originally implemented by the Spurs and later on mastered by the Warriors. Might be a stretch tho but the Spurs played some of the most beautiful team basketball I’ve ever seen. Obviously Warriors had the best spacing for sure but Spurs were like 5 players playing as one.

@@niklasroberts1085 that's the beauty of the system. They are playing five out with many shot creators. Lauri can create, Clarkson, Sexton, Conley... Too much options from five out. They don't have to run anything in particular. They can just read and react. And there is no scheme against that.

A flare screen is where the offensive player receiving the screen cuts to open space, usually away from the hoop. If effective, that player should have an open jumpshot or a driving lane to the hoop. The flare screen can also force defensive players to switch their assignments.
