UT Kilts - Guide To Expandable Waist Kilts

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My name is Brice and I am the owner and founder of UT Kilts. In this guide we are going to go through the different types of kilts that are adjustable, both utility and traditional. Typically, traditional kilts can adjust quite a bit while the utility styles cannot. We will look at each one and show how much they can adjust. Also, we will discuss how many utility kilts can not adjust as much as the makers of those kilts think they can.
First, let’s look at traditional style kilts. Traditional style kilts can adjust quite a bit due to two reasons:
1. They have large adjustable straps of up to 4 inches.
2. There are not external parts of the kilt that cause the kilt to lopsided or off kilter when the waist adjusts
The first one is easy to see. Those large straps can adjust a lot. However, what makes those work is the fact there are not pockets or any thing else that, when the waist is moved, will make the kilt look ‘off’ or lopsided when wearing. This is essential on a kilt if you want to adjust a waist and still have the kilt look, feel, and fit right.
www.utkilts.com/tartan-kilts/
Now, lets look at utility kilts. At first glance it may look like if you just add snaps or straps like a traditional kilt the utility style kilt will adjust just as easily. However, it will not! Remember all the belt loops, pockets, straps, buttons, apron, etc. are all set on the kilt for a specific size. The minute you go beyond that side something must change. That means either your cargo pockets and pleating is off to get the front apron and belt loops to line up or vice versa. That is why some say their utility kilts can adjust, but that really is not 100% true. They only adjust if you are willing to wear what looks to be a poorly made and lopsided kilt
At UT Kilts we have a few different kinds of utility kilts that can adjust. First, we have the athletic and wild utility kilts that have Velcro on the waist instead of snaps. These can adjust quite a bit, but we recommend keeping to under 2 inches to keep the pleating and pockets looking and hanging correctly

www.utkilts.com/ut-wild-outdo...
The UT Kilts ultimate utility kilt is a bit different. This kilt can adjust almost as much as a traditional kilt but will not change the hang or look of the other pieces of the kilt. This means that when it goes up in size all the pockets, belt loops, front apron, pleats, etc. will all stay in the same place and look just as if it was not changing size. This kilt uses an elastic waist built into the waist band of the kilt to expand without changing the other parts of the kilt. Youi will only find this kilt at UT Kilts
www.utkilts.com/ultimate-util...
These types of kilts, both traditional and adjustable utility, are perfect for those that can have some variance in their waist size (Thanksgiving and holiday eating anyone?). It will also save money in the long run as you won’t have to buy as many kilts to fit when your waist fluctuates up or down.

@@utkiltsbrice I'm wanting to get one in an olive green for regular use and one in a dark charcoal with a mixed gray tartan for the front panel as a more formal dress. I tend to wear a size 34 to 36 in shorts but my waist seems to measure more a 38 it seems, but I'd like to have both have two or three sizes going downwards.

So, there is one company that does an excellent adjustable kilt. StumpTownKilts. I got one cause it was on a clearance rack at the Phoenix highland games. My two annoyances are the waist/stomach section. It's only about as thick as a belt. I would prefer it being 3-4 inches. Making it almost like a cumberbund cause I'm fluffy. That annoyance leads to the other one. It only has one row of snaps. If it had two or even three rows it would be way more secure and have a thicker waist strap. Basically, two rows of snaps with a three inch waist and up to six inches of play would be perfect. I've researched a few dozen companies with adjustable kilts. None of them have the versatility, adjustability and fitment that the StumpTown Kilt has. My proposal is to do a kilt like theirs with a more squared apron and two rows of snaps. Then you would have the ultimate adjustable utility kilt. Personally, I'd say it would be the perfect multi-function kilt, but that's just one fluffy man's opinion. Extra little rant: Ideally you can add more pockets, go bare bones with out pockets cause it has a apron pocket, use a thin belt or a super thick double row belt, you know, one of those 2.5-3 inch thick leather belts. Having a utility kilt with that amount of adjustment and accessories would be pricey but it would make buying a kilt as a fluffy guy a whole lot easier. I know I'd buy 3-4 in the basic colors. Khaki, black, gray and navy. Shoot I'd buy more even. I've got at least two tartans I can wear and would love a pinstripe on navy or black. Eh, just some food for thought from the fluctuating belly side. Went from a 46 to a 54 to a 44 around my stomach over the course of a decade. The 54 -> 44 in a year. I got my stumptown when it barely fit and now it fits perfect, if just a little big. Adjustability and longevity is my ideal.

I have an angry bastard workman bought in 2016. Bout a year after I washed in hot water and shrank it. It affected the look just a touch. Now my waist is 4 inches bigger so now the apron doesn't sit right and looks kinda odd now. Unfortunately I don't thing angry bastard is still going. Utility kilts are minimally adjustable. Damn my fave utility kilt don't look right now and it's just starting to get worn in real good but still stands on its own. Made of duck cloth. I still wear it for fishing or working round the house.

Yeah, most utility kilts can't adjust much without changing the look of the kilt. Just touching on the washing, I recommend washing any and all clothes in cold water and hanging to dry. Heat is the enemy of all clothing and will prematurely cause your items to fade and wear out.

It sounds like an Ultimate UT kilt is probably my next purchase. 😉 I have several utility tartan kilts, and some traditional tartans. My waist size is often like a mini rollercoaster LOL 😆. Sounds like the best thing would be an Ultimate waist kilt for my weekends. (I'm not allowed to wear a kilt at work. A real bummer 😕)

I really like the idea of the comfort waist (as well as the extra pockets) on the Ultimate, BUT I prefer the look of the five snaps on the apron of the Deluxe as opposed to the three on the Ultimate. Is there any way to get an ultimate kilt with the five snaps on the apron?
