Avoid getting a horrible kilt!

UT Kilts Guide to making sure you don’t end up with a horrible, poorly made kilt!
I get a lot of questions about kilts (of course!) and lately I have had people purchasing kilts that they thought were a good deal and were not. Whether it was the construction of the kilt or the details about the kilt they were told were wrong, there are many kilts that are just not very good at all! So, lets take a look at 4 examples of kilts, 2 traditional and 2 utility, that have some big problems with them. This will help you to know some things to look for when looking for a kilt.
1. This first kilt was sold to me as an 8 yard, 16oz kilt. It is neither of those! It does not have nearly enough pleats to be an 8 yard and the kilt is extremely light weight. These are probably the two biggest things that are sold to many when buying a kilt and end up being incorrect. Be sure to double check that the kilt you are looking at is the weight it is advertised as well as the yardage.
1A. Also, the straps on this particular kilt are almost plastic. It is important to ask for some good quality leather or faux leather straps for your kilt

2. This black traditional kilt was only partially lined! I have never seen anything like this before. The liner does not actually do what it is supposed to do since it does not cover the entire kilt. This can also be a tough one because it may not be pictured on the product listing and the manufacturer may consider this a lined kilt, even though it is not fully lined.
3. A utility kilt should always have sewn down pleats. When you don’t sew down the pleats you get a kilt like the one pictured. It will not hang correctly and the pleats will always be out of alignment.
4. It is even hard to tell if the construction of a kilt is done correctly. Most people that sell them, especially on Amazon and eBay, don’t even know how to properly make on in the first place. The seems on an incorrectly made kilt will pop extremely easily. While you may save a few dollars at first, it will cost you more in the long run to purchase a kilt like this

Over the years, UTKilts has been my go-to recommendation for people getting in to kilting. And I have really come to appreciate UTKilts premium line. I bumped into a an older man visiting the museum I work at. He was wearing a UTKilt as well and said that he owned at least 50 of them! Brice has struck the perfect balance of price and quality.

Thank you very much!
The 22" drop of the UT kilts is what pushed me to this particular brand when I was shopping for my first kilt. Most utility kilts online were only available with a 24" drop which is just too long for me. I'm looking forward to getting my kilt in the mail this week.

I know I've picked up kilts from the Scottish festival and I know the biggest problems I've had with places like Got Kilt, and a couple other brands is the peeling of their acrylic kilts. So far the two utility kilts I've gotten have stood up pretty well. Granted most of these are around $50, so I don't know if that's what their really worth.

Yeah, piling on acrylic kilts is a pretty common issue. Especially cheaper ones.
I have four of UT's kilts... Two in the Premium line and two in the Standard as well as multiple accessories... I COULDN'T be happier with the product or Bryce's customer service.

Great video! On the topic of Amazon kilts, do you have plans to increase the amount of tartans available in your premium wool listing? I get a lot of Amazon gift cards through the year and would love to use them on your wool traditional kilts.

Yeah, that is a tricky one. It would be nice to offer all the custom order ones on Amazon, but Amazon is just not setup for that. There are ways around that though if you want to reach out to me directly. brice@utkilts.com
Yeah, you are not going to get a 8 yard wool kilt for $150.00 American.

Quick clarification. You are not going to get a worsted wool, woven and made in Scotland wool kilt, 8 yards, for $150. However, it is possible to find woolen wool kilts that we sell for that price. Though the wool is much different.
