Ustad Sultan Khan (1940 -- 27 November 2011) was an Indian sarangi player and singer who performed Hindustani classical music. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor, in 2010.

I met Ustad Sultan Khan years ago and spent a lot of time with him and AbbaJaan ( Ustad Alla Rakha Sahib ). He represented the best in music and humility. In later years he became very sick. The Govt of India gives title to its artists, but no financial help or medical coverage. BTW my GURUJI ( Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib ) received McArthur Grant ( Substantial Tax Free Cash Amount ) and lifelong good medical coverage. India and Pakistan are both remiss in helping their artists, poets, composers, musicians. The politicians and the movie actors have everything. Mehdi Hassan was very sick and the Pakistan Govt. did absolutely nothing to help him... Finally, Jagjit travelled to Pakistan...did a few concerts to raise money for Mehdi Hassan and also donated from his own pocket.

It is due to corruption that there is no help offered. Lot of useless guys will make money in the process. However some state governments do help. Government of Maharashtra did offer subsidized housing to singers such as Dhondutai Kulkarni, a Jaipur Gharana singer.

Important issues here need to be addressed immediately. Bangladeshi artist are also needing similar assistance in old age and sickness. Best regards.
