fun set! Up to the point where the camera died Winston was ahead by 1 point (40 vs 39). Matt's S&V was pretty successful (7/10) but Winston also had great passing shots. Overall Matt won slightly less more than .50% of points at the net (18/35). Fun points at 4:12 and 8:50 KZread won't let me post a link to the stats, I emailed them to you.

Very solid play Winston, to come from 0 3 down to make a great match against a solid player. I think you hit some great passes too, and did a good job of getting around your backhand to constantly hit forehands.

I like how Winston adapted really quickly after being down 1/3. he tried to stop over hitting and going for the lines and let Matt make the volleys instead of trying to go for the winner. Thats the right way to play against serve and volley! the only thing I would point out is that Winston might be standing too far inside the baseline esp when Matt comes forward, that gives him much lesser time to react to the volleys

Nice playing Winston! A shot that could be really effective to develop against this play style is a good defensive lob. It denies your opponent the chance to play their game (if they like the net) and is easier to hit than a crazy passing shot?

I think passing shot and lob are equally effective against a good net rusher. Lob is easier, but if the height/depth are not right, it will often get put away with an overhead. Furthermore, even with the right placement, your opponent may be able to retrieve the ball so you do not win a point right away. Passing shot is harder, but with the right placement, you win the point out right. And even with so-so placement, your opponent may or may not be able to hit a winner. This is purely theorizing, but if you think about it, people who choose such an aggressive and explosive style usually think and have muscle structure more like leopards than zebras. So naturally, they would prefer handling passing shots (quick jump and block) than lob (running backward and swing).

maybe you've been asked this multiple times, but I will ask again! how do you mount the gopro to the fence? and is it hard to find the angle of recording?

Matt's a high level player but seems like his intensity was saved for a hot date. Felt like you let him back in the game at 4-3 and 5-4. Still, good job grinding back the points.

yeh Winston is a more solid player at the baseline than matt is at the net. he didn't really have to work that hard wasn't pushed much.

@@WinstonDu Aaaah, I saw well then! I was looking for the 2004-2005 model of the racket, the one that came without the cortex dampener above the handle but they're rare and pricey! So I think I'm going opt for your model or similar...how do you like it?

@@stephentribbiani3076 I believe the first AeroPro Drive with Cortex was the 2007/2008 model. I own one. Definitely not my go-to racquet anymore but I still string it up occasionally.

It's tough to serve and volley consistently these days with baseliners bombers...fun to spectate contrast as others have said. Matt did a decent job...maybe an "off" serving day but either needs a huge first ripper or mad-skill spot serving. S&V ok occasionally, sure to mix up/disrupt rhythm. But most aggressive baseliners luv a nice target to pattern their passing shots on. Winston has got some nice-and-easy fluid power from the ground that kept him close. Fast surfaces like grass or slick hard court would've helped Matt but overall he missed some easier volleys and made some tough ones. The risk of the classic wood racket style in the era of power rackets, with amazing spin-string material, and grip changes to the extreme requires exquisite timing and tactics to make S&V look easy! It's mentally tough to get passed and punished for a minor serving error, or booming service return. Mind-blowing baseline spin-power is awesome either way and always a sniper's kill-zone clinic against a very brave S&Ver!🍻

I've watched Matt before and not positive that S&V is his normal game. I could be wrong. That said, he certainly seems comfortable coming into the net. My guess is that he usually plays a more all court style game.

Yeah, normally I don't S&V in singles. I'm more of an all-courter but been working on S&V during quarantine to add more dimensions in my game.

@@Maximagq This is very helpful to build confidence in your SV in practice practice matches. I have found that the more you use a skill like SV you become more comfortable and confident when you use it in a match. Good to have more tools in the tennis tool box. Think about how many ground strokes we hit compared to volleys. Many players can benefit from more net play in practice matches.

BLX 6.1 95 16x18, the old Mardy Fish racket. Sometimes I do haha. If I hit the ball in the center of the strings, hopefully it goes where I want.

Matt, what's your first 1st serve fastest and avg speed?

Hm, the last time I measured on PlaySight, my fastest was 111 mph and the average was 92 mph. I seem to be serving slower these days though. Not sure why.

@@Maximagq Letting racket head drop too much in backswing..? Getting elbow too close in to side of body..? Rotating less..? Flexing knees less..? Its really easy to slide on technique and not notice.

At 3:57 during Winston’s service motion Matt started to run to the net. The ball was not hit yet. Is this legal? This is not a service interference?

@@SolowSports you’re not off :) and I was never trying to be mean to them either. I run a tennis club and I can tell you there’s very few legitimate 5.0 players, and a solid group of 4.5 players. Both groups are well above their level. Regardless they seem passionate about tennis and will reach those ranking legitimately anyways at some point I’m sure

it would be nice if you could put the scores in the screen. Easier to follow!

winston you have very good footwork and you are very fast. Perhaps you and Dill can play each other.

I think if Winston had the opportunities to close it out. I think in general, he’s the one who dictated points and had the edge despite losing the set.

Lots of service games lost which is a little unusual at this level and quite odd for a S&V player. From this set alone (small sample it is) I would say both have a better follow-up game than their serves. Matt has amazing touch and reflexes at the net, notably in the first 3 games. But his serve is not giving him the usual advantage a S&V player has when coming to the net. All serves look like slice serves with a shaky/curly toss. There's neither variety nor consistency in them. So Winston had a good time returning them. As for Winston's game, he has good ground strokes and gradually adapted to Matt's game with good passing shots. Here too the serves are comparatively weak. There's no coiling to start with. All speed comes from a toss well in front and the body falling onto it with a waiterish kind of serve, leading to sharp flat serves or most of the time pushy kick serves. This allowed Matt to becomer rather adventurous or even menacing with his SABR's. Very entertaining and overall good level - just some work to do on the serves :) Cheers

Can you ask Coach Chase to do a tutorial on how he hits his forehand? I think it is very unique, and I'm sure many would be interested to see how it works.

Winston looked like the better player with better mechanics. I’m surprised he didn’t win. Matt, when you’re a net rusher, you have to make time to develop a ground game as well. I feel like net rushers figure out a shortcut to winning points and as a result never really develop a back court game. Good luck guys and keep playing!

I'm surprised that you lost the match. A rule of thumb is if you can comfortably return a serve volleyer's first serve, you should beat him, and it does not look like his serves caused you much trouble here.

Matt played really well the first 2 games. I wonder what happened after that. First, it was tons of double faults, he stayed back more, his approached shots were really short + right at Winston, plus a tons of unforced errors. It would be good if Matt shared what happened to him after the first 2 games... Thanks.

@@WinstonDu right. 5.0 is supposed to be essentially a college level player while anything higher (5.5-6.0) are D1 players and professionals. Unless he was giving 10% effort there’s 0 chance he’s a 5.0. You’re probably close to a 4.5, but I would say still around a 4.0. It’s not even a matter of me trying to be rude, but people exaggerating their rankings is a rampant issue and putting it out there like you guys are only encourages people to do the same

"College level player" is such a wide range - at the top of D1 you have guys who while in college were ready to contend at the Open (like Blake or Dent) who would be 7.0 rated and also guys in D3 who would lose to both of these players. I'd say they both look like about a 5.0

@@mrog5481 while I respect your opinion 100%, I just disagree wholeheartedly. I feel bad I said they made up their ratings because that’s not what I meant. I believe USTA tells them they’re a 5.0 or whatever. But there’s a massive flaw in that system. I taught tennis at the Penn tennis center (UPenn) where our mens team was consistently in the top 30 of D1 mens tennis. Those players should be about a 5.5-6.0 on the USTA scale. To say these players in the video are even remotely close to that is just plain ludicrous. So again, they are above average amateur players and I love how much they’re enjoying themselves, but the rating system is just really really bad. They both have issues with their serve, have trouble generating pace, and don’t really have much footwork going on. They’re extremely consistent though which generally works out great for USTA so I give them credit for that. But if you put them up against a legitimately good D3 player it would be rough

Honestly, Matt shouldn't be coming to the net that often. Not to take away from Winston 's returns and passing shots, but matt's shots were more often slow or poorly placed to come up. I have played with players like this and if you keep your cool, they will break down eventually. To come to the net, you need to have a strategy on when to do it. Either hit hard, dink/trick shot or, attack backhand and approach. Furthermore, to be completely honest, matt isnt that great at the net. There were too many floater for winston to pick off. Plartly due to winston good return or matts poor judgement on when to approach. Winston, great on dealing with the net rush pressure. Just keep your cool and strick when opportunity shows itself! Well done!

More like both 4.5. I am a weak 4.5 player myself but I am confident I could take on serve and volleyer 50/50. Maybe its match up but I love guys who rush to the net and let them taste my forehand lol. Sometimes I hit harder than guys serving and beat legit 5.0 guys at forehand exchange reguarly. My backhand sucks thogh, only around 3.5 where my forehand is around 5.0-5.5 level.
