I am a 3.0 tennis player, but my friends are 3.5 - 4.5 . I started playing tennis last year April 2021. When I started I weighed in at 305 lbs. I currently am at 195 lbs. I started my first league beginning of this year in Jan 2022. I joined my friends WTT 3.5 team. We have national qualifiers this coming Friday - Sunday. - Benny

Great to have you on Jeremy. Good to show someone at a beginner's level. But please do not wrongly refer yourself as a 3.5, I don't know if that is Winston's mistake not knowing the ratings. You would definitely be at the 3.0 level. You probably spend more time at the gym vs tennis court and there's nothing wrong with that. That would also help you knowing going against 3.0s you could play competitively.

9:50 I think Winston is also exceptionally good at putting slower 2nd serves away. Those dink serve returns are actually easy to overhit if your technique is not 100% solid.

Flashbacks to this guy in high school. He would literally throw the ball up and dink in the second serve. Then dig in like an Alabama tick on the baseline. He always beat me. It really shook my confidence back then.

Great content. I always struggle with how to rank myself according to the USTA levels and believed to be somewhere between 3.5-4.0 After seeing both of you play I think I'm confident in saying this is true. Some of Jeremy's 1st serves that came close to being in did look a bit spicy, so if he can get that sorted out and have a better 2nd serve, he'll probably go up a few notches in levels quite quickly, and his forehand looks quite sorted out already. We all get beaten like this or worse, but learning from it is the quickest way to improve. Back when I played tournaments the ones where the loss stung the worst where the ones where I improved most afterwards. Please share more content like this.

First game was classic example of a more advanced player losing to pusher type ..dumping balls into the net on slow short balls etc. it’s good to play ALL LEVELS of players to get use to every type of different ball. MORE LOTTI videos. She’s mostly the reason I watch this stream 😁

Also, I could tell by watching that you were deliberately trying to hit to Winston's backhand even before I watched the post-match commentary. Great job on that! This was fun to watch, also makes me more confident that my (self given) 4.0 rating is accurate. Tip for Jeremy: on those forehands, you need to position yourself farther away from the ball (laterally). You're a little too close. Winston - you're forehand is def looking better than when I first started watching your vids.

Some areas like mine get skewed. There are no 5.0 leagues. So no one wants to get bumped up because they wouldn’t be able to play. So the 5.0s are all “4.5” which keeps the 4.0s from wanting to move up and so on. Everyone you play here is likely a level higher. I played a D2 college tennis player who was “3.5” lol. That said, by usta parameters, Jeremy is a 3.0 with lots of potential.

Pretty promising 3.5 player, light on his feet (at least at the beginning of the match), loopy relaxing forehand. Backhand is a little bit pushy with arms and not enough body rotation. Most people don't like lefty slice serves, he probably gets quite a few free points with that serve motion against his peers, but may want to try hitting up and forward instead of too much slicing to the side. Most of us are not tall like Winston. Any inches gaining in the vertical direction is a good thing.

Watching the first game I got worried for Winston. If he kept dinking balls that stay low it's not so easy for Winston as he hits topspin forehands and would have to control that while running into the net. Quickly Winston took control though and dominated. Nice play!

@@AnthonyChaucer I honestly have a hard time telling what those rating mean. In Germany we use a different system which goes from 1.0 to 25.0 which goes from best to worse. My rating is 14.0 which is converted 4.0. From my experience he is certainly 4.0

LOL. Too funny. This video reinforces my suspicion about how an intermediate-advanced player like Winston and myself reacts to a weaker player who doesn't always hit the ball with nice topspin and consistent depth. When advanced players play with each other, they hit like a ball machine where the stroke is predictable and consistent, minus the "always in the same spot" of course. However when you play with a beginner-intermediate player like Jeremy, they don't have that consistent technique so their shots are unpredictably long and short and crazy angles, making it actually tough for some of the more advanced rec players like myself. The evidence is that Winston was struggling on some of the points, when Jeremy hit short balls and Winston netted them.

I(4.5)played a guy like Jeremy (3.5) couple of months ago. Honestly, was afraid of losing a single game because of level difference and that was stupid of me. We all recreational players and learning and far away of being "good". When I realized this and just played relaxed , I won by double 6-0. So, just don't put an obligation to win on your shoulders.

He's clearly a beginner at 3.0, not 3.5. 3.5 is an intermediate player starting to be consistent . I started as a 3.0 beginner, started reading Tennis magazine and played in the USTA league and got better and moved up to 3.5 as I got more consistent and won more matches than I lost. I moved up to a couple 4.0 teams as a 3.5, and still was able to win a few matches because of teaching myself Sampras's serve motion from Tennis mag and developing a 100 mph + serve, but you need to play 3-4 times a week to get consistent at a level and move up and contend. Being an athlete from the start will cut down the time it takes to develop into being a good tennis player, as seen by watching Jeremy. Watching tennis tips and coaching from former tennis pros here on YT also will help quite a lot. I hope to start playing again. Florida and Georgia have a lot of rainy days compared to California, so harder to play when it's wet out. Should be the dryer season soon (I hope). Why are there no indoor clubs/courts here? IDK

3.5 isn’t a beginner level, it’s the level most players play and most players will never reach the 4.0 level.

3.5 represents the largest chunk of league players, thus not a beginners league. 4.0 represents above average and 4.5 is usually the pinnacle for casual tennis players.

"2 minute tennis" has some excellent tutorials on the serve if you want to check those out for the fundamentals. You already have pretty decent mechanics from your first serve, you just need to work on consistency and aim. For the second serve, don't think about swinging slower, that's what got you killed here, instead think about swinging just as fast but with more spin and clearance over the net. You can't be tentative about it, that's the number one mistake. With as passionate as you clearly are about the game you'll be hitting better serves in no time. Good luck!

Jeremy, your ground strokes are very good for 3.5; just improving serves is your next goal. More than techniques, I would say you were not practicing much on serves!

Jeremy's forehand and backhand are pretty nice when his feet are set. Movement is going to need lots and lots of practice and training and he needs to rebuild a new serve lol.

Jeremy cannot be a 3.5 without the serve. The serve is the most important part of the game. You can't even start thinking about strategy until you can serve confidently + consistently with varieties: wide, kick, flat, spins. I spent most of my practice time on serve for years and just began to see results by switching to a more suitable racket.

Winston does have a slice but the slices shown are not lethal. Against a big hitter, that slice would be a sitting duck. Winston needs to work on the footwork, the anticipation, and reading the opponent's shots. Winston does rely heavily on his superb fitness. That might be why Winston's footwork is a little sloppy and clumsy because he can afford to. After the service, Winston doesn't go to the center of the court to get ready. Against Jeremy, that's not a problem, but Winston should take the opportunity to incorporate more good habits. Move forward, for example. The groundstrokes need improvement, lots of forehands struck off the back foot. As a result, Winston is using his muscles to generate the power instead of his form. Would like to see Winston really step into the shot; especially, against Jeremy. Winston will see the difference in MPH on his forehand and be able to put away a lot easier than before. Work on those top spin lobs, and net play. Return of serve would need to be more aggressive to set up Winton's biggest weapon, forehand. If Jeremy can win one game against Winston, then Winston can certainly without a doubt win one game against a big hitter. Zero unforced errors, and Winston must assert his groundstrokes by stepping into the shot. Not off the back foot. Winston has to be ready to go from the first point to take advantage of any player that hasn't settled in yet. That's the window of opportunity to win that game!

It's not bad tennis, it's junk ball tennis which a lot of "spin doctors" utilize. Junk tennis is no joke, just ask Hsieh Su-wei, WTA Doubles Rank #9 and two grand slam doubles titles, Wimbledon 2013 and French Open 2014. Two surfaces where junk tennis really shines compared to predictable bouncing surfaces like the US Open and the Australian Open. But not to say junk tennis cannot win on hard surfaces. Just ask retired professional men's player, Fabrice Santoro ranked #6 in the world. Fabrice Santoro won two men's doubles in the Australian Open 2003 and 2004, won one mixed doubles at the French Open 2005. Fabrice Santoro also won the ATP Tour Finals in Doubles in 2005. Had Hsieh and Santoro been on the same timeline in their respective careers, it would be very interesting to see them team up in mixed doubles. Even Martina Hingis, Michael Chang, Monica Seles, Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, etc., utilized some junk tennis that being drop shots.

When a 4.5 gets beaten by a 5.0 + people tend to be critical but a 4.5 is actually a very good player and also has the ability to teach and coach.

Jeremy could honestly be a is a 4.0. Already has better strokes than some 4.0s tbh, and he's extremely fast and athletic. If he self rates 3.5 he'll be bumped quickly

Strokes looking pretty good, but I question his consistency a bit. But it might just be Winston's pace. I know plenty of 3.5 who have great strokes, but they just make too many errors to be 4.0. He did have a few good rallies though.

Respectfully agree. He is doing well and has lots of potential. But the league 3.5s in my area who play #1 singles are regularly getting aces, not struggling with second serves. I get that it’s different regionally but this is very much 3.0 court play with 2.75 serving. That said, he’s playing well for the time he’s trained and can quickly climb with his athleticism.

Agree with this assessment. However, I would add that -- even though it isn't intended to be so -- usta ratings differ by regions of the country and the corresponding density of competition at different levels. In CA where there are so so many good players, I would expect Jeremy would have a hard time moving from 3.0 to 3.5. (He could self-rate at 3.5, but I wouldn't expect it to last.) That being said, a 3.5 is probably in his future, maybe 4.0. Age and athleticism are in his favor, as is playing Winston.

I would respectfully agree too. Athletic potential is there but just judging by groundstrokes and serves, theres no way this guy could be a 3.5. He would be destroyed by 3.5s in my area. He is definitely more close to 3.0. Serve is definitely definitely 3.0 or below level

In Russia, the scale of ranges of rec. players displaced in lower value. It sad but 'is as is' - the historic fact. Jeremy's level would be as "3.0" and Winston's level - 4.0 in my country

3.5 are hardly beginners though... Jeremy obviously needs to work on his serve and gain a bit more experience, but his style is pretty standard. You know what would be fascinating is watching you play against someone like an MEP... :)

Dude, play handicap tennis! Let Jeremy start out each game 30-0 and it would be much more interesting. competitive and enjoyable for both players. Yeah, Winston seemed off kilter to start the match... Jeremy has some potential, I think, if he can develop a serve... I also thought he hit some very nice forehands on occasion. And he battled the best he could... Overall, I would rate Jeremy as a 3.0. That serve needs to really improve to get any higher, though... He had a great attitude, though, so he seemed to have fun with it...

@@rusty935 you mean he is not 3.5 ? Often times rec players don’t have the best forms and we can’t really judge them by comparing to pros. I have seen 4.0 with continental grip and pancake serve but super consistent.

@@owglimoll898 at 4.0 you really only need 1 relative strength. most 4.0 players can beat me in the FH corner which is easily avoided because most of them have weaker serves, weaker backhands and weaker net game. Jeremy is probably fitter than every 3.5 player I've played with
