    lander4545 Sure they had an answer... Backfire bombers doing saturation cruise missile attacks. The British has the same sort of response to the Soviet Sverdlov cruisers when they built the Blackburn Buccaneer strike aircraft. Why do you think the US Navy pushed through the Aegis system? Without a screen of Aegis cruisers and aircraft carriers... the BATTLESHIPS were sitting ducks... just like they were since WWII. The Iowas were all laid-down before the carrier was recognized as dominant... and rotating CAP (i.e.:the Big Blue Blanket) made battleships redundant for anything except shore bombardment and mop up.

    I was in the Navy with people that saw these things fire in 91 and my Dad was on a ship going alongside under the fire of the New Jersey in 83. Everyone said it was incredible to see and to hear and to feel. Even firing 4.5" is pretty hardcore if you are close to it or underneath, but I can't imagine what these things must have been like. Its pure power!!!

    @Dana William you do know an anti ship missiles are massive look at the Russian Brahmos missile each cost up to $3 million weigh from 5500 pounds to 6600 pounds and fly up to Mach 3 or 2300 MPH. The Brahmos 2 is expected to fly up to Mach 7, I don't know what kind of drone your talking about but $10k won't get you a military drone let alone an anti ship missile. South Korea at one point had the K11 rifle in production, that rifle alone cost $14k. Look at the Slava class destroyer, it's loaded up with 16 anti ship missiles ready and the launchers are massive.

  • @bryanmartinez6600

    @Dana William of course you could sabotage a ship by just planting explosives in an empty ship, has been done in WW2 by the Italians on British ships. But the Iowa class ships were designed to take hits head on like any battleship. Standard explosives won't do much to these unless you get the impact inside or on the bottom of the hulls such as torpedoes. But the tops armor is extremely thick with the turrets being the strongest points. The Iowa turrets sit on an a base plate that is up to 17 inches thick and the front of the turrets are 19 inches of steel. The deck is 6 inches of thick. The magazines themselves are the most protected part of a ship to prevent detonation. Blowing up 500 pounds of explosives on the turret will cause some damage but not even close. The Yamato was hit by 11 torpedoes and 6 bombs each torpedo had a 600 pounds warhead and the aerial bombs were 2000 pounds each of nothing but explosives. an active battleship was difficult to destroy with conventional weapons even a drone with explosives and even if you kamikazed a 500 pound drone of explosives it won't destroy the ship. That's why anti ship missiles are far more effective they work similar to a sabot round and it pierces right through the armor.

    Incredible!!! But I have to admit there's nothing like that first time. During General Quarters I was assigned to the 5" 38 guns near turret 3. Every time turret 3 would fire our floor hatch would fly up and the vibrations would rock us around a bit. It's amazing what you can get used to, because after being on board for years you would be able to sleep thru it.

    What tradition? Battleships only ever had one big battle and that was in ww1 before carriers existed. They were in service for less than 50 years as full metal jacketed ships. If you want tradition, start gawking over the USS Constitution, because those are the original battleships. Wooden planks, chain and gear rudder, canvas for horsepower, and 36 guns per side. @ I get your point, but it depends how you define a "big battle" of battleships. There were quite a few smaller 1 or 2 BB vs 1 or 2 BB actions in WW2 in the European theater and one around Guadalcanal that I can remember, plus a bigger one at Leyte Gulf. None of them were as big as Jutland, granted, but there *was* a battleship tradition not to be scoffed at! Btw, The Constitution as you may know was *not* technically a "battleship" or even a "Ship of the Line," but rather an extra-large frigate. Listed at 44 guns, she probably had significantly less than 36 guns per side, even including carronades. Maybe 26-28 or so. 3 Cheers for the Constitution!!

    Those 4 Iowa-Class Battleships had the most awesome silhouette. Coolest ships ever built, closely followed by the Bismarck, and Yamato. Visited the New Jersey, BB62, last time I went to Philly. It was in pitifully sad shape, rusting and rotting. They need to preserve these great ships.

    These battleships had been retired right after WW 2, but were put back into service to counter the Soviet's missile boats during the Cold War. They were then retired again after that, but were pulled out of retirement again for the Gulf War. The reason they did this was because there is no substitute for raw armor thickness and massive guns. A missile has the chance to be shot down, while a shell is extremely hard to defend against. They were also equipped with missiles and new technology to increase their range and versatility both times they were pulled out of retirement. I think these ships may still have potential use in the future because armor that thick, and guns that big, can never be obsolete.

  • @neurofiedyamato8763

    ***** Guns are obsolete. Newer radars can potentially intercept shells and rockets. Look at the SeaRam, CIWS and CRAM, they can all differentiate bombs, shells and missiles from debris. AA missile can detonate near the shell and launch fragments to detonate the shell in mid air. Current AA missiles don't have teh accuracy to hit the shell but they can detonate near it. A shell doesn't go much faster than a missile, in fact modern missiles matches if not surpasses battleship rounds. Of course this requires extensive modification to the computers and really good timing meaning hell of a good crew skills. But we are getting there with weapons like the CRAM and the Iron dome. However it would take a bit longer to replace armor. Then again with advancing interception systems, it would get to a point where solid, heavy, resource draining armor that slows you down becomes obsolete. In fact we are getting close. We already no longer uses BBs for this reason. And sooner or later, never will again. Maybe reuse the classififcation but big gun and armor? No.

  • @Supershot156742

    @Supershot156742

    9 жыл бұрын

    It's true that AA systems are getting better, but they are not 100% accurate. The newest missile systems that have been defending Isreal recently have not been able to shoot down every missile launched. There is also a difference between being picked up on radar and actually being shot down. Radar today can spot objects the size of birds, but it doesn't mean they can shoot a projectile of that size down. Battleships can also fire off more than one shell at a time, possibly overwhelming any AA defenses in an area. The shells used by battleships are also smaller and cheeper than missiles that would give the same explosive force. When it comes to the armor of the battleships, you said that armor will eventually become unnecessary due to better and better defense systems. That was one of the reasons the battleships were decommissioned after WW2. The US believed that having new defenses and faster ships would make armor unnecessary, but then the Soviet Union came out with designated missile ships. These could get through defenses and hit the faster ships. The US brought the battleships back into service because they could take the hits that no other ship could. This kind of arms race between being able to hit an opponent and not get hit in return has been a constant for war, and is not going to go away. When the US or some other nation creates a "perfect" defense, some other country will come along and prove it wrong. And when you can't avoid the hit, you need to be able to take it and keep moving. The battleships will probably not be brought back into active duty, but I just think it is sad to see such amazing weapons of war that will never be recreated sit in a dock as a museum.

  • @neurofiedyamato8763

    @neurofiedyamato8763

    9 жыл бұрын

    It's sad to see yes, but it's always an armed race in the military. Yes weapon system VS defense system will keep going on. But That's the same with Guns. The armor may seem invincible right now, but when we need, we just mount AP warheads on missiles and would do the same as a battleship gun if not eben more devastating. Back then it's Ap capability VS armor. Now it's Defense systems VS offensive systems. Well, the CRAM, seaRam, CIWS and Iron dome all can take out artillery shells with differing level of success. Main reason why Iron dome is failing in some respect is it's getting saturated, can't field enough but it is proven to be highly successful.

    I love battleships too and would love to see them sail again but there's no doubt armour is obsolete. Stealth is the only safety for naval vessels. A submarine could plant a dozen torpedoes into a battleship before it even knew what hit it.

    lkbartnick They were brought back into service to replace the cruisers the navy had worn out. After WW2 the navy had no use for them. After years of not replacing the cruisers and wearing them all out. The BBs were brought back into service until the navy could build replacements. Once the navy had built sufficiently they were again retired. As beautiful and tough as these monsters are they are horrible to maintain and crew. Sadly their real job had been stolen from them by airplanes, a much cheaper and effective weapon.

    When I was a young man, too many years ago, I was on the firing line in the CA desert. A woman, obviously terribly inexperienced. went between the tables during the hot session to watch her man with a .25-06. Everybody stopped and warned her to back off, that she would get hurt. She ignored us. Since she wasn't forward of the line, just even with it, we continued shooting (there obviously was no range master in charge). The next time her boyfriend fired the gun, she yelped and came away from the firing line bleeding from the nose and maybe ears just from the concussion of a .25-06. I can't even imagine being anywhere on the deck of any ship firing guns that enormous. She learned her lesson, and anybody watching her did, too!

    Respectfully, that is a myths. If anything the USS Wisconsin is about one inch shorter then she was before the damaged, as the damaged was done lower in the bow and the top of the bow was left in place and was not replaced, and of course is the longest part of the bow. There is still visible damage left in the deck where it buckled a little, pushing it about one inch in. Naval records has the New Jersey being the longest Iowa by a few inches, not that a few inches really matters. New Jersey is in the Guinness World Records as the fastest and longest battleship ever.

    If the Montana Class Battleships had been built they would have been more devastating than the Iowa Class Battleships. Armed with the same 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 rifles she would have had 12 rifles instead of 9 and fired 24 shells per minute compared to the Iowa's 18. Iowa Class Battleships 2,916,000 lbs of AP shells per hour. (1458 tons) 2,052,000 lbs of HE Shells per hour. (1026 tons) Montana Class Battleships 3,888,000 lbs of AP shells per hour. Walked on the Deck of "The Whiskey" for the first time in 2019. She is a Museum ship now and when I stepped on the deck, I got chills. I've been on the USS Massachusett, not trying to take anything away from her but, the chills I got stepping on "The Whiskey" was like nothing I have felt before. I just wish I could have seen more of the ship. When I was younger, I wanted to join the Navy just to serve on one of the Iowa's. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the type of job I wanted on them and ended up in the Army. I am like some others here and feel, they made a mistake when they put them out of service. No other ship in our Navy with the firepower, armor, and speed of those ships. One of my wishes was to see, in person, a full broadside by an Iowa class Battleship.

    @MrBreukuleis From various sources: The six silk powder bags are filled with reduced charges of D845 smokeless propellant. After WWII, Nitrated-Cellulose (NC) propellant was replaced by smokeless Powder Diphenylamine (SPD) , which burns cooler and therefore increases the barrel life. Barrel life was still increased later by the introduction of a titanium dioxide and wax compound called "Swedish Additive".

    I have often wonder how the Navy would have reacted if WW2 was delayed 3-5 years and they found out about the Yamatos. Only way the Montanas would get built is if the war was delayed. Also, if the Navy found out about the 18.11" guns on the Yamatos, the navy of course would not have the exact specs on the Yamato's guns so they would have probably played it safe and redesigned the Montanas to have the 18" 48 cal guns they had worked on. They could have done 4 twins turrets for 8 guns but it would have been amazing (and my dream) if they did 9 guns in triple turrets, since they already had too great a beam to go through the Panama Canal so larger turrets wouldn't hurt. Research done by several nations, including the USA, UK, and Japan had shown you actually save weight and citadel space with 3 triple turrets vs. 4 twin turrets and you gain 1 more gun. With this improved efficiency, maybe they could have gone back to the Iowa's 212K horse power engines instead of the 172K they settled on, giving the Montanas 30 knots instead of 28knots, while keeping the Montanas increased armor. Can you imagine this? Five; 30 knot Montanas armed with nine 18" 48cal guns, armored to the gills, sailing around. Makes me drool. lol The shell they would fire was 3,850 lb... My god how awesome!

    The Yamato is on the bottom because of aircraft, it never faced another battleship in combat. The Yamato vs Iowa would be an interesting battle, and the outcome would be entirely dependent on the conditions of the battle. If it was a night battle, or during inclement weather, Iowa would likely win due to superior radar and fire control. If during the day at range, the Yamato's superior armor and penetration would probably win out. There was a big difference between the design philosophies between the two. Iowa was simply designed and built to meet a certain need, to a specific set of design parameters. Yamato was built to be the best battleship the Japanese industry could build at the time. Say what you will, the Yamato was an incredible piece of design and construction even by todays standards.

But, what amazes me most, is the structural engineering of turret platform that can carry them and endure the sustained and repeated forces of those guns, over and over again.

  • @mikecancilla3

    The concussion and heat blast would be bad if the front two turrets were facing the bow and firing same with the stern turret... the broadside isnt that bad cus all of the energy and blast is going into the water and creates a shockwave for a brief second.

    I'm not sure what is injected into the barrels after firing, but it expels the hot gasses to cool the breech so they don't cook off a round in the barrel. This happened to one of the 5 inch guns on one of the DDs or DEs (I don't recall which one) at the battle of Leyte Gulf. The gun cooling failed and the last round they had cooked off in the barrel and killed the gun crew.

    It's too big. WAY too big. And, I don't think it could handle the recoil, braced or not. However, a 45000 ton warship is perfect Besides, these things were basically the scariest naval fire support platforms ever. Like in desert storm, where the enemy would spot an UAV and suddenly from something they couldn't even SEE (out of the horizon) either 9 50 foot craters appearing at once or a rolling fire of what were basically volkswagen beetles loaded with high explosives hitting every few seconds until they were told to stop. it got so bad that they started surrendering whenever they saw that UAV because you don't fuck around with what comes next. their armor also allowed them to shrug off anything that could be sent their way, like tanks.

The general rule as I recall was, you could be on deck while firing, you were allowed to be aft of turret 3 if they were firing 1 or 2, you were allowed to be forward of turret 1 if they were firing turret 3. If they were firing all turrets, you were generall not supposed to be on deck. Also, you were expected to wear double hearing protection, the little foam insert plus the big muff style things. This was obviously not always followed.

Longest range a battleship gun can fire is around 45km. 45km is still considered the shoreline of a country. Battleships are only good at providing fire support for amphibious assaults. Yet we already have cruise missiles that have 4x the range and extended range shells of much higher accuracy.

    The flash hoods are worn to protect the wearer from cordite propellant flash if a bag of propellant burns. Navys started wearing these after WW1 when various ships had fires in their magazines.
