USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT | The Best Protected Aircraft Carrier at Sea

Ғылым және технология

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is currently operating in the Pacific Ocean and from the looks of it the “Big Stick” is one of the most well-protected warships in history.

EXACTLY, this is a Nifty group. Except, I would like 4 submarines for the group. To have 4 positions spaced evenly, among the grouped. That would be SUPER BADASS. & I emailed that point, & hasn't happened yet. If it's my group, than,I need that requirement. If I am a sailor, this is where I want to be at,😉😊🤩🤩🤩🤘🤘💜.

@terry waller . the more, than, 1 submarine point has enough logic to believe it. Except, as technical & experienced as we are,we can manage my plan. I want that extra edge in capability and fire power.

@@thomasodonnell2187 I'm sure there are more submarines operating in a carrier strike group than are acknowledged to the public. Add to the Ohio class ballistic missile subs, Virginia and Seawolf attack boats, and I'm sue the Navy has it more than covered.

I was onboard during the shock trials. It was very impressive. I still have a photo of CVN-71 going through the shock trials on my office wall. People often wonder what that big explosion was next to the ship. The entire ship was pretty much instantly displaced by the shock of the explosion. I remember dust falling from the overhead when the blast hit. They told us all to bend our legs as we braced for the shock. Quite the experience.

Me too! I was in a repair locker. I remember bracing for the first blast and it was hardly even noticeable. The next too weren't that exciting either. But the fourth (last) got all of our attention. The entire ship moved sideways instantly. Not as in slowly moved, but was pushed hard in a fraction of a second. We spend a few hours going over every inch of our repair locker looking for fire/smoke/sparks and burst pipes. Thankfully nothing was damaged in our area. We didn't know what to expect, but for each shock test us fire-fighters (I was a #2 hoseman) had the O2 canisters for our OBAs ready to activate just in case we had to fight a fire. I wasn't looking forward to that scenario for we did advanced shipboard fire-fighting training in Norfolk a couple months previously and actually used our OBAs in live training exercises. That stuff was extremely hot to breath when you're all masked up and putting out live fires inside of their mock-up ships. I was in S-7 division (ADP) during my stint onboard the Roosevelt. I may well have seen you while I was there. Man that all seems like a different lifetime for me. I was in the service before I was ever married or had kids. None of them think of my as having been in the Navy!

Great Ship, I am a Plankowner of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (86 to 90) Weapons Dept. Lived on it in Newport News Shipyard under that crane in the beginning. I was on board during shock trials and its first Med Cruise. Got off the ship in June 1990 right before a major deployment to the PR Op area. My EOD date was the same day of Operation Desert Shield, Aug 05, 1990. Tried to go back in but they only wanted Coreman. Just like anything, I didn't like it at the time, but miss it now.

In 1975 we took the USS American to the north Atlantic. At 93 feet from the flight deck to the water we had wave coming 30 feet+ over the bow of the ship and over a hundred feet height difference between the bow and fantail. For 3 days I never saw any escorts but new they were there I felt so sorry for them. It was beating the crew on the carrier to death. But I promise the escort ship really earn there pay. What they when thru was beyond anyone imagination.

Carriers are really tough. You could hit with it with a dozen anti-ship missiles and multiple torpedoes, and it would still float. There are so many compartments and redundant structural supports, most of which work in classified ways, that sinking it is almost impossible.

One concern that continually haunts me - carrier defence against Chinese ballistic missiles (DF 17. DF 21) and defence against Hypersonic anti-ship missiles (e.g. Russian Zircon anti-ship hypersonic cruise missiles). Is the Navy ready for this?
