USMC M38 SDMR Rifle at the Designated Marksman Qualification Course

U.S. Marines with 2nd Marine Division participate in a designated marksman (DM) qualification course at Stone Bay, N.C., May 1, 2018
The M38 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) is derived from the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) but different optics: the Leupold TS-30A2 Mark 4 MR/T 2.5x8x 36mm scope. It is also mounted with the KAC QDSS Suppressor.

So, are the Marines going to use mk262 ammo in these rifles like the mk12's?

The weapon is effective far past 700M. It can effectively hit a point target at at least 900 with match grade ammo.

They really needed to change the handguard. The SEALs with their 416s already did and it's way better and change the stock

There isn't. The Corps just realized this gun works better as a DMR because of it's weight and accuracy and since they have a ton of M27s already issued, they could just slap a scope and suppressor on it and call it a new weapon

Sp0ckr0ck they use it for accurate suppression instead of area suppression. This rifle is basically supposed be an upgraded mk12 so that, if necessary, the dm can use the same magazines the rest of the Marines in his squad are using. This rifle just gives them a variable power optic to have more accurate fire on longer range targets when sniper teams are not available for support. Don't forget, the IAR only has a 3.5x optic and the m4 has a 4x optic. This is a 2.5-8 power optic

Rick C at 500 meters for a point target with a variable power optic you can have somewhat inconsistent placement of your trigger finger and still get hits on target. Remember, this is a semi/full auto rifle in 5.56 so follow up shots are going to be pretty common. When you are putting 3-5 rounds downrange per target you are likely going to get at least one hit.

"Hits on target"...that, of course, depends upon how big the target is. I'm sure you know consistent and correct finger placement on the trigger, along with correct trigger squeeze, contributes to drastically reducing group size. I'm surprised those Marines were not practicing this basic shooting concept, esp. if they're trying to qualify as a marksman. I guess I'm showing my ignorance of what it takes to "qualify". I should have phrased it differently....I apologize. Also, if that's your picture by your name, thank you for your service!

Normally from experience of being around former Marines, myself a former Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, the Marines are better Marksman. Why these marines have their fingers incorrectly placed on the triggers is beyond me. Their forefathers are turning over in their graves.

Why didn't the Corps just use a 417 instead of the 416 variant like the M27? The only difference I see is a higher powered scope and a longer barrel

MegadethDude2001 It’s far more than that. The M27 has been in service with the marine corps infantry battalions for some years now. It has served as a replacement for the M249 SAW within the automatic rifleman billet of the Rifle fire team. The only difference between the M38 and the M27 is that the M27 is equipped with a 3.3 power squad day optic, which used to be used on the M249 SAW but works well on the M27. The M38 is equipped with the rifle scope you’re seeing in this video. As for why the Marine Corps uses the M27 and not the HK416, let’s start with the fact that the M27 is an Infantry Automatic Rifle, capable of replacing the M249 as a squad automatic weapon and the HK416 is a short barrel carbine mainly proficient in close quarters engagement. The medium profile, 16.5” barrel is far better while in use in high rates of fire required of the automatic rifleman. The M27 is therefor also more accurate, and has a greater effective range, and even features a bayonet lug which the marine corps specifically requested. In general, the HK416 does not fill any of the needs the marine corps has in armament at this time.

Dylan Rutan why didn't they just use the 417 chassis for the M38 for a 7.62 caliber rifle?? Why a 5.56??

MegadethDude2001 That would require an entirely new weapons procurement process. That marine corps wanted a rifle that would easily equipped with gear and ammo we already have. This brings us the M38.

MegadethDude2001 logistics and reality. 7.62 does not offer enough effect on target to justify the sheer weight and bulk of the platform. A similarly configured SR25 of HK417 platform is going to be pushing closer to 15lbs. Thats a lot of weight for a rifle. 7.62 also is very limited in capability at shorter ranges. If the purpose of the rifle were 600-1000+ then 7.62 would have been justified. But under 600 meters there is limited benefit and a large number of cons. Within 200M, 5.56 generates hydrostatic shock that far outweighs the force of 7.62s energy, and this is from speed alone. 5.56, even M855 also transfers its energy better at these reduced ranges, which causes more damage on target. Weight and mobility also exist with the 5.56 platform. Such a rifle as youre suggesting would also require its own 100% unique logistical support structure. By sticking with an AR platform, though it may be slightly different offers more parts compatibility with existing equipment, which saves money. Then comes the matter of visibility. Marksmen tend to be targeted more because they do pose more of a threat to their enemies than standard infantry. By retaining a platform that is very similar in profile to the standard M4 or M27, the marksmen carrying an M38 will be far less likely to be targeted more than the rest of their group. The principle behind the M38 is also an outgrowth of the NSWDG RECCE Rifle concept, which both predates and succeeds the Mk12 program. I highly suggest looking into the topic. It is quite intriguing.

'HK416 is a short barrel carbine mainly proficient in close quarters engagement' You misunderstood something there. The HK416 is available in many barrel lengths, from 9-20 in. The M27 is a 16.5" HK416D with accessoires. Doesen't even have a heavier barrel.

Brian Rayment I would really argue otherwise. We aren’t the only ones using a relatively small bore projectile. The Russians for example, largely use the 5.45x39mm projectile, an even lighter and smaller diameter projectile than the 5.56x45mm NATO we have long grown accustomed to.
