    I understand it looks new and I dont know for medieval period,. buuuut... in antiquity we know the phalanxists used strapped shield when they had a long two handed spear or pike. The romans also described thracyan warriors using a two handed falx (or rhomphaia) sometimes with a shield (albeit a small one). And not to forget that its so freaking easy to do... it defenitely wasnt a new technique 😅

Jokes aside, that's an interesting Fantasy Armed (seeing as they don't have a traditional weapon, I doubt you could call it armed). What would intelligent dragons with the ability to shift into humanoid forms (like in WoW) do in combat? Use a bow midair? Shift into a smaller form to dodge ballistae shots? This seems essentially like what the Japanese did: Metatron argues that the pauldrons (the sode) on the o-yoroi are adapted shields. Turning the body sideways and tucking the head would be enough to deflect any blows that are chest level or higher, and the design of the sode maintains greater freedom of movement than a full-size shield with a strap (as well as having coverage on both sides of the body).

    A few points: 1) In the second medieval art that you show, the figure is holding his sword "at the short", or half-swording. A thing which you show briefly, and then spend the rest of your video showing cuts. 2) There is precedent for shield and spear LONG before the 15th c hunting scene that you show: the Argead (heavy) Hoplite (often incorrectly called the Phalangite). Not only was he carrying a spear in two hands and a shield, but that spear was a pike of quite extreme length.

  • @tmcclennen1

    @tmcclennen1

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@elijahcastillo7679 Total change. You use your two-handed sword "at the short" or "half sword" when your situation is "Oh shit! I really need a spear, but all I have is this sword!" A sword can not cut through plate armor. Which is not to say that a man in plate armor is totally invulnerable, because specialty anti-armor weapons existed, like a pole-axe or a war-pick, or other things like that. But with a sword, the only way to injure an opponent armored in plate is to stab him (notice, I said "can not *cut* through plate), especially to stab in the joints of the armor: the inside of the wrist, the inside of the elbow, the armpit, and throat, the groin. In that situation, aim becomes the most important thing. You are trying to hit a target that is only a few inches across, on a moving body, that is trying to block and generally make you action difficult. To improve your aim, you take your left hand off of the handle of your sword, and grip the blade, and then you basically use the sword like a pool-cue; that is: aiming with your left hand, and providing the force with your right. In short, you use it as a spear.

    In the middle ages foreign words were kind of translated, anglicized, italianized etc. And so London in italian became Londra, and Roma became Rome in english. So it's possible that "Pavese" is an anglicised word of italian origin, wich means that the word follows english grammar rules. If you really want to use italian grammar the plural is "pavesi".

    As someone who fights like this (re-enactment fighting, eastern and western style). It works fantastically well with long spears or hewing polearms (halberds, glaives, billhooks, etc.) but the long or great sword is to dependent on mobility for this to be practical with a real weighted shield. Also Shad needs longer or flexible straps on his shields.

    Fun fact: Some guy named Philip from an old kingdom called macedon had already used this idea for his pikemen. But the shields were made small and can be strapped to the men's forearm and their neck both. This gave the soldier the ability to use their shield while holding their 4 meters long pike with both hands. His son, just some guy named Alexander would then use the same soldier type to its fullest and almost conquered the world with them. That should be enough proof that this technique is working somehow.

    Games: "You can't use a spear with a shield." History: "Tell that to the phalanx." I recall back in the older editions of Dungeons & Dragons (and specifically AD&D, since that's the one I know), a shield only increased your Armor Class from either the front and side or the rear, depending on whether you were wielding it or wearing or across your back. Naturally, this led to character builds that carried two shields. On the other hand, 5th Edition gives the spear (and the quarterstaff, battleaxe, longsword, trident, and warhammer) the Versatile property, meaning it can be wielded with one hand (allowing use of a shield) or two hands (increasing the damage die).

    In Georgia (country) We had one king - Vakhtang I Gorgasal (442-502 A.D.) (Gorgasal was a nickname he got in fights from Persians meaning Wolf-headed - due to wolf faced helmet). We know from the folklore that he was very big man(having songs how mountains were shaking while he was marching), and had huge sword as the weapon of choice. After I got into history more (from KZread), now I am wondering, maybe he was indeed using something of a two-handed sword in one. He is my favorite King of ours, for his feats on the battlefield (as a tactician and deadly fighter), defeating enemies much numerous than us and for the bonus point he founded our capital Tbilisi!

    I could imagine that the shield, while hanging on my shoulder , could be a potential lever for my opponent to get me to the ground. Quite a strong one at that. And I assume relatively easy to grap in comparison to my limbs. What do you guys think? I really like the polearm combination.

    A buckler, despite what D&D tries to claim, is the opposite. A buckler has a single small handle in the center - basically a dedicated parrying and shield bash weapon. You dedicate your off hand to your buckler as you would a main-gauche or sword breaker or other secondary weapon in a dual wield build. The wrong definition of the word "buckle" came to mind when seeing the name and trying to think of game mechanics for it; it's not "a shield strapped to the forearm with a belt buckle" but "a shield used to buckle against blows".

  • @Floofysheep
    @Floofysheep3 жыл бұрын

    This opened up so many combat options. I just put a strap on my targe and tried using my greatsword. It works surprisingly well, as does dual wielding or using a buckler with it. If the buckler is lost or the shield is too cumbersome, just slide it on your back and go back to using the greatsword like normal!
