Using the Original iPad 10 Years Later!

Ғылым және технология

On January, 27, 2010 Steve Jobs took the stage to announce his last groundbreaking new product, the iPad. 10 years later I take a look at the original iPad and compare it against Apple's most advanced modern iPad, the iPad Pro to see what has changed and what has stayed the same.

The iPad works amazingly the box came a little dirty, kzread.infoUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA no plastic wrap, but the box was sealed and had everything else in the box along with the wrapping, the iPad itself is gorgeous, I got the yellow 64g game storage is good for me along with Socials and school stuff. No scratches or marks came with the charger and box fast speed, and if you are buying a pen get the 1st gen don’t make the mistake I did !!

I liked skeuomorphism... The icons and the overall UI was looking so amazing! There was so much detail in everything, that you just couldn’t overlook! Now everything is flat and simple... Not saying iOS is looking bad, it looks beautiful and for sure it is nicer than other OSs, and it has the best animations and physics feel, but when seeing all those modern flat icons and UI elements they make me think I just simply recreate them in photoshop myself... there isn’t any detail to appreciate... Skeuomorphism made the devices feel more magical I think. They felt like you holding a physical object that indeed could be transformed into anything you wanted, from a real notepad to a real agenda to a real calendar etc! On the other hand, the flat design feels more like just “icons” and “lines” on a display, nothing less nothing more.

I had the orignial iPad. I was in college at the time and honestly it was a game-changer. I used it along with a bluetooth Apple Wireless keyboard as my laptop to take to classes, take notes, and I could even use the college's software for downloading e-textbooks and uploading course work for professors. Grant it, that software did work better for laptops but the fact that it was compatible and ran relatively smoothly on a first-gen iPad was incredible. And yeah the device is heavy by today's iPad standards but at the time, it was so late even with the keyboard. And the fact that I could get most of my textbooks as e-textbooks meant I was carrying around a lot less on campus than my peers and my back definitely thanked me for it. Would I want to use an original iPad in 2020? No, I love my 12.9" iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio. But it's amazing that the iPad really was always a device that could replace or at least provide an alternative to a full computer. I really think the sky is the limit with iPads, and even then they'll likely go beyond that.

Watching this on an ipad 2, I still like to use it :D I also have a 12.9" pro and I will have to disagree with your last statement, I do believe that the modern ipad pro with ipados embodies what the original vision for the ipad is, It sits right in the middle between my phone and macbook, I have apps on it that I use also on my phone like tinder, spotify, shazam, youtube etc and I also use it as a laptop replacement with its desktop like feautres. And as a music production tool to complement my music production. With this my macbook pro has become a music making tool only :)

I also can do pretty everything I need to do on vacation with it so I travel with it. I did just recently compliment the Mini with a bigger tablet, a Microsoft Surface Pro. I love that it’s a full computer and a tablet, not has good a tablet as an iPad, but way closer than you would think.

My first iPad was an iPad 2 two that came with iOS 4.1.2. At first I used it mostly to play games and experiment with some piano Apps and it was such a great experience. Sadly, my laptop kinda died around that time, with it randomly turning off and not wanting to turn on again, so I decided to use my iPad instead so I bought the iWork and iLife Apps. I still used it to play some games like the amazing iOS Dead Space game that is sadly dead now, or the amazing iOS Mass Effect game that is sadly dead too. I mostly used the iLife Apps for school work, and sometimes I used iMovie for some school projects and GarageBand for some hobby music stuff. I remember my iPad was more powerful than the latest iPhone that was released, which was a great thing to me. Almost half a year later a Jailbreak was released for my iPad and I immediately installed it and I loved lots of teaks, like Activator, which allowed me to turn the volume buttons into music control buttons, or a tweak that allowed me to have a ControlCenter-like window but I can't remember its name. Also, there was a tweak that allowed me to connect my PS3 controller to my iPad and map the buttons and sticks to touch inputs. There were a lot of possibilities with Jailbreak and I continued using it for years. I remember that I had my iPad on iOS 5.0.3 or something like that and Apple released the iPhoto App requiring iOS 5.1, so I opened iFile, searched for an iOS *.plist file and changed my iOS version to iOS 5.1 and magically I could start using the iPhoto App without needing to update my iPad and lose my Jailbreak. When Apple introduced the MFi controllers a few years later, someone created Controllers For All, a tweak that allowed many popular controllers, like the PS3 controller or some iPega controllers, to be detected as MFi controllers. Also, I fondly remember a tweak called Quasar that allowed me to open as many Apps as I wanted as windows. I remember having an iPad App in portrait mode while my iPad was in landscape mode, with Instagram, an iPhone App, on it's side and KZread on the corner, just like Picture-in-Picture. Back to the stock features, I got a 30-pin to VGA adapter so I could connect my iPad to my TV and my school projector and use it with Apps like Keynote, which allowed me to have presentation notes on the iPad while showing only the slides to everyone else, basically having a different video on the iPad itself and on the output video, or the amazing Asphalt 6 game that used that same feature to send a full panoramic 720p picture to the TV, instead of the native 1024×768, while only showing the controls on the iPad itself. The camera itself could take 960×720 pictures, but there was a catch, because when you were taking pictures it was actually cropping it from a full 1280×720 sensor. When I switched to video capture mode it "added" more image to the sides, allowing me to capture native 720p videos, and that was really great when paired with iMovie. Of course only 4 to 5 months after buying my iPad I got a Kensington keyboard folio cover for my iPad, and it was such a great thing to have because it allowed me to write documents without an on-screen keyboard covering a good portion of the screen, and I was honestly surprised when I discovered the iPad had support for many common keyboard shortcuts like ⌘C, ⌘X and ⌘V. Some years later I got an Airbender case, with was fully plastic and aluminum, and the keyboard was one of the best keyboards I've ever used on an iPad. A couple years after I got the iPad my brother found a 30-pin to USB adapter for the camera kit, but with the amazing power of Jailbreak I could use it with iFile to connect pendrives with 1 GB or less storage. I tried with 4 GB or 8 GB, the max I could find atm, and they just didn't work. With all those possibilities, my iPad truly replaced my laptop as a high schooler. Also, I remember when Adobe released their first Photoshop App, which was truly amazing. It had lots of features that I still don't see on many current photo editing Apps. That iPad was my main computer from April 2011 to August 2016. That's 5+ years using an iPad as my main computer, and something I'm pretty sure almost no one has ever done, but I did it and I enjoyed it. I specially enjoyed carrying such a lightweight device, even with the case, and being able to do everything I needed to and even more, and also carrying a portable gaming device with me. Once I started the uni I had to use some specific software, like AutoCAD, which wasn't available on iOS, thus forcing me to get a laptop. It was august 2016 and I wanted a Macbook because iCloud was already a thing and I was already used to the ⌘ key, but I didn't have enough money to get a recent Macbook, so I bought a 13" 2012 MBP, the last MBP with a DVD drive and upgradeable RAM. After that, I didn't use my iPad as often because I needed to carry my MBP most of the time anyway, but after a year I upgraded the RAM to 16 GB and after another year I replaced the DVD drive with a SSD drive. Of course I still used my iPad to play some iPad games and watch some Netflix and KZread, but that's about it. A year after I bought that MBP, the WiFi antenna of my iPad broke because the corner where that antenna was started to lift, eventually breaking it. I ordered a new antenna and did my best to open that device for the first time. Sadly… I broke the glass, so I ordered a new glass and replaced it too. The antenna was supposed to be glued to the glass, but I didn't do that because it would break again. My iPad started working again! Then stupid me gave it to my then-girlfriend for her birthday only to break up merely 3 months later in august 2017. Moving on to october 2018 I really wanted to have an iPad again, specially because it was so convenient to have one and it also allows me to download content from Netflix (like my iPhone), but with a more comfortable screen size (like my Mac), so I bought a used 2017 "iPad", and I've been using it ever since. Coming from the A5-powered iPad 2 to the A9-powered 2017 iPad was sigh a huge difference, with native multitasking and many features my iPad 2 never got when it was stuck on iOS 9.3.5. I use this iPad more often than my previous iPad because it's way more powerful than the latter, and I don't really need to carry my MBP anywhere with me anymore. It's such a great device for traveling, which I do a lot. I mean, I still carry my MBP with me just in case, but I often leave it in a suitcase and carry my iPad in a small backpack with me. Such a great device that literally changed my life.

When I was born my mom bought the original iPad for me and my sister. It was 2010 then. I used to remember having so much fun on that thing. When I was 5 I could even turn it on and control it myself. That thing was what started being obsessed with devices with apps like instagram and TikTok. Soon, the iPad was just too old and sorts of new Apple devices were coming out. We decided to recycle the iPad..though I wish we didn’t because I would be able to look at it now and say “what a weird device”. This video brought back lots of good and bad memories for me. And I thank you for that. Keep up the good work!!

Apple better support for 5 years on both software and hardware part. Problem is they have tooo many products and comfusing. S10, then s10e, s10 plus, s10 pro whatever. It's very confusing. @@GregsGadgets I bought the first two iPads and then the 6th Gen version. The 6th Gen version hasn't been used or touched in a couple of months since I bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max which I use for email, messages, and reading books, and it is always in my pocket. The iPad has a bigger screen but I don't like to watch video on it or carry it around and the phone is unobtrusive and always there with cellular connectivity. I almost always want to use my computer for banking, videos, books, and serious email and web browsing such as comparing multiple web sites to order stuff online. I prefer the exactitude of a mouse and keyboard to the finger keyboard and external mouse of an iPad. I could buy a $2,500 iPad Pro including cellular radio, Pencil and Keyboard, but for $2,500 I could also buy two pretty good laptops or one very good laptop. It seems to me that I am almost always a phone and computer kind of person. As good as an expensive iPad is, it doesn't compare to either a good phone or a sort of good laptop, let alone a powerful desktop. Your needs and likes may vary.

But if you just want to download some videos to watch in the train or wanna use it as a second screen for some documents and stuffs, it holds up surprisingly well. Since iOS 9 is still very similar to iOS 13, I'm honestly shocked how much of a beast that was in 2012. I'm gonna finally get a new iPad Pro tho. But I don't wanna miss my old iPad for a second, it was always my favorite electronic device to use!

I was a kid then but I remember vividly it was a simple, clean interfaced streaming player with a search function and a ''favorites'' that were your channels. Looked awesome actually and worked flawlessly with WiFi.. and no ads, no interruptions, no BS. Paradise video watching! Now its unbearable. Fortunately unlike my dad that has always been an Apple freak, I never jumped on that stupid bandwagon and have had Android since the start. Thank God for rooting, controlling, customizing and ACTUALLY INTERACTIVELY OWNING YOUR OWN DEVICE and among other things, getting rid of all ads system wide. Do you even remember the first 3 years of IOS there was no cut, copy and paste? That's right, genius Jobs who always thought all the users are mental retards and only he knew the enlightening truth, didn't think it was necessary. And to this day, there still isnt a real file manager hahahahahahahaha...is hilarious. Apple is a joke from start to finish..

Greg, for the two-step verification code when downloading an app on the original iPad iOS 5, the way to bypass it is typing the 6 digits after entering the Apple ID password. Try it and let me know how it goes
