Not gonna lie I'm glad he took the time to explain "Good " a little more. After watching the motivational video, I didn't quite understand it and now I can say it makes more sense. I felt that the video went into the area of Pollyannaism and frankly that there was something to process there besides the idea of simple saying, okay good now try harder in a sort of self help guru manner. @@keithsimonh I took something from the book hagakure. It was book written near the end of the time of samurai as the culture died out in japan. One of the key things in the book was that a person who constantly calculates or ponders on the negatives of a situation gets distracted from it, sort of mushin or flow in modern terms. @@Vashthestampede967 I own a copy myself. The parable of building a house always left a bad taste in my mouth. Consider also, I believe this was either the hagakure or the book of five rings, "treat mountains as molehills and [vice versa]" and to view the near things from up high and the far things closely. The eastern masters enjoyed their zen double entendres. It's less to not ponder on such things but more important to not fret and let them totally consume you, to put bad things aside can be as fatal a mistake as allowing them to take all of your mind.

I think it's all about the mission. The "Good" philosophy is a technique that puts you in the proper mindset to move forward. Inversely, when we have the "Bad" philosophy, better known as victim mentality our vision is not clear and the mission can become compromised. Good = How can I use this to my advantage Bad = I don't deserve this / why is this happening to me See how "Good" puts you in a better place to get the job done? That is its power. Your attitude is the lens that you see the world through. It's important to maintain a healthy lens.

100% agree with you. It seems like a lot of people now have their outlook set to the "bad" victim mentality and can't see the "good" learner/problem solver that we all have within ourselves. My ex used to have that "bad" mentality and it was so draining to just see a problem and it feel like we were working against each other to solve it. "Good" people can't teach "bad" people how to be "Good". They can't only teach it to themselves.

This reminds me of a self help book that I read praising Walter Cronkite in his saying "And that's the way it is." I see Jocko's "Good" as a simplification of Walter Cronkite's acceptance of reality and/or your situation and entwining it with a belief that their is something to learn from this moment to improve your self in the face of this reality.

To me what “good” means in bad situations, is having a sense of humor in those situations, if my car breaks down I can either get very upset, or I can say good and just accept it, and saying good in those situations and not flipping out gives me experience to learn how to control my reaction in shitty situations for the future. And as well at helps me look at the bright side.

I was raised by a bunch of blood, sweat & tears die hard Americans. I was taught to "look on the bright side". As a teen/young adult, I often felt frustrated after venting to one of my elders about a problem because they played devils advocate, didnt give me the sympathy I wanted, didnt solve my problem for me, or feel bad if I had to face the humiliating consequences of a poor decision, etc. Things I often heard (also maddening as a kid) were: -- Its all in your head! -- Get up & get going. -- Put one foot in front of the other. -- Youll figure it out. -- Oh, well -- sink or swim, baby! -- You made your bed, now you gotta lie in it. -- Now, think about where he's coming from. The men & women had a different approach to applying the same principles to our interractions. The women were soft, loving & compassionate; whereas, the men were rough around the edges, more authoritative & cold. I recognize that too much "tough love" can be damaging over time in diff ways, so Im thankful I had that balance to benefit from. Thankfully, I learned how to care for myself, self assess, hold myself accountable for my responsibilities, etc. If my grandfather complained about having to park too far from the store, my grandmother would look at him & say, "Well, thank God you have legs. Would you rather be crippled in a wheel chair just so you can park closer to the store?" She was soft spoken with conservative values & the most dependable person Ive ever known; but nobody could get away with feeling bad for themselves while in her presence -- even if they had good reason. She knew what it meant to be supportive. She lead by example, helped those who helped themselves & knew that sometimes the best thing anyone can do for a person is just to be there -- to be that soft place to fall as the kid/young adult figures things out for his/her self. Anyway, point being... I know now that she & others in my family werent trying to invalidate me or be cruel, etc. They were helping me to build a mindset that would allow me to withstand the storms of life. I hate to sound cliche, but "count your blessings" and "the obstacle is the way" is essentially what they were teaching me. I have seen SO many people whose attitudes allow them to be trapped in a victim mindset. Theres no power there.

Thank you Jocko! You have no idea how much you have helped me separate the wheat from the chaff and get down to business to complete the mission. I love you brother, thank you!
Good just showed me a pathway to overcome. Honest truth, thank you.

Thank you Jocko. Very appreciate you reminding me of the training I’ve been honored to receive. From my Soul thank you Brother.
Thankyou Jocko the first time I saw the video I hated it that was about 4 or 5 years ago, now it makes a lot more sense.
It certainly changed me life. And in 2023 its still a motivator. Echo your a legend much respect.
“Good” has helped discipline myself in ways I prob can’t fathom. I’m literally one of those people that were introduced. It’s helped me stop blaming myself for everything in turn punishing myself.
Accepting reality and not allowing yourself to fall into the woe-is-me attitude is crucial for not falling into despair and moving forward in life.
Jocko really is equally inspirational as he is terrifying
This reminds me of a self help book that I read praising Walter Cronkite in his saying "And that's the way it is." I see Jocko's "Good" as a simplification of Walter Cronkite's acceptance of reality and/or your situation and entwining it with a belief that their is something to learn from this moment to improve your self in the face of this reality.

Wonderful.
"Lies" video is the best on the internet. Everyone should watch it. "Good" is also solid.

I feel as though the “Good.” philosophy is just Jockos personal practicing of stoicism. What are others thoughts on that statement? Taking no credit away from Jocko as a philosopher, but has he really formulated a unique approach to handling of adverse situations or is he just a modern Stoic?
@OngleBongle

Definitely seems like modern stoicism with how "good" means you focus on things you can control now after faced with issues you cant

When you say "good". What you are doing is accepting and acknowledging reality. You are not saying "good" when you get injured or when something "bad" happens. Like really bad. The "good" philosophy is a tool to allow you to move forward without self pity but without self delusion either. That's how I interpret it
Good.

I'd like to add an other angle to it: In my life very often do I had to say or recognize : "crap" /shit , and had to figure out a way to turn it into something (at least) good. So I had /still have to improvise. Which means: brain on and think. How to fix things to the best possible outcome due to your capabilities. Review later on that matter , learn from it, get better.

Is "good" not just a shorter version of "finding the silver lining"?
@keithsimonh
3 жыл бұрын
Silver lining is cope and inactive acceptance; "Good" is an imperative to react and make due. "Good" applies even when there is no silver lining.
Sounds to me like Stoicism. You focus your action on what s in your control rationally and reject to feel victimized for what happens outside your control.
