The difference between traffic lights and roundabouts is that roundabouts are more efficient but lights take up less space. This makes lights a viable option when you need to reduce traffic in a space that is too crowded with buildings to fit a roundabout. That dark blue route that was to small to fit a roundabout was a perfect example for traffic lights

Most of the time nothing is better than lights and in general they should never be picked over anything else, it reduces time for the green lights side but increases for the red making times more unstable. Apparently they buffed them but they're still trash tier and only usefully in areas that have a really high level on congestion which should never happen anyway.

If you have the space and the tiles to plan a detour for the time period when the cars are all still coming across the old road this works, but highways get finicky and replacing them isn't really feasible past 1.5k trips. Of course, if you have a spare highway, that generally takes care of the issue as long as you have a place to connect it to the houses while you wait for the old one to disappear. Less is more sometimes, I like to pop-in houses to existing networks to control demand without actually removing the main roads (unless it's absolutely necessary). Happy day, got my first score over 15,000 trips this morning :D

I've done this before but it's a huge gamble, especially the more infrastructure you're moving around. Because you don't get your items back until they disappear from the map, which means no bridges, motorways, roundabouts, or road tiles till the car's journeys are complete. It can fix congestion, but it effectively resets the journey's so i'd advise not doing this if you have many buildings with too many journeys to be made. However; redoing the map in sections can really help end game congestion. my highest score is something like 1,700+ and i average about 1,400-1,500 so depending on how well you do, this can help get higher. i mostly struggle with my junction efficiency, but tmk that's a common problem.

In the latter case, the traffic piles up, but the light logic seems to work so that it allows the traffic in one direction to clear entirely, then the light changes, and then the other direction clears entirely. Based on my testing, you can actually feed two circle destinations through that kind of intersection with lights. The cars just arrive at the destination in bursts instead of steadily over time.

I would like to throw my hat in the ring for good tips: Tip 1: Control Spawns. Use your excess roads to prevent supermarkets and houses from appearing in places you don't want them to. Also, its generally a good idea to place roads in one-tile gaps to make sure that you can funnel a road through that intersection later without it possibly getting blocked. Unlike people are stating in the comments, THIS IS NOT A BUG. This is an intentional mechanic to make sure that you can't get screwed over by some bad placement RNG, and really its just to make things in general a bit less messy. Tip 2: Segregate Colors AND Businesses. You have a decent grasp of the first concept, but not much of the other one. The delivery nodes aren't queued by houses, they're just nodes that are created by the supermarkets themselves. This means that sometimes, its way better to COMPLETELY segregate off say 2 houses just for a single supermarket, or 4 or 5 for a cinema, rather than combine all the houses for all the businesses on one road. Note, that the number of houses required increases with distance traveled, but you get a general feel for how many you need when you play the game more. Tip 3: Motorways. I think the general consensus from gameplay I've seen from other players is that you ALWAYS take motorways. They can act as a bridge in a pinch, and are basically an infinitely long road. Using these motorways is generally divided between necessity and luxury (necessity is that there is NO way for a business to be fed without one, where as luxury denotes that it only speeds up deliveries, although there is somewhat viable alternative routes.) Luxury motorways can generally be removed and repurposed if need be. That being said, its not all about motorways, especially later in the game when you get introduced to new terrain types. Tip 4: Neighborhoods. You should understand this one, being a highway engineer. When it comes to neighborhoods, you want to feed them into an arterial road rather than make the neighborhood an arterial road. This helps to improve congestion on multi color roads. Tip 5: Control the flow. Controlling the flow is really only applicable in scenarios where more than one color is on a road. Lets take this game for example, with the area using the yellow supermarket with a light blue cinema. Ideally, the way you want to approach this is instead of doing what you did, you want one color coming in from each side of the zone, rather than both colors coming in from one specific side. DO NOT make traffic flow through parking lots. It makes parking lots incredibly slow and congested, so doing the above makes them much more feasible. These are all my quick tips for the game. I know that when I started playing this game, the most I could ever hammer out is around 1000 trips. Following these tips however, it was plausible for me to reach 5000, and I think with better reinforcement of these methods it would be possible to get way higher scores.

I know it's been a year since you commented this, but would you mind explaining Tip 4 more? What does it mean to feed neighborhoods into an arterial road? Does that mean group up the houses and give them one shoot onto the main road, or lots of little shoots onto the main road?

Early in the game you usually have a bunch of road tiles and small map, so I don't know if anybody does that, but you can somewhat control where you want houses to spawn by placing road tiles where you do not want any spawns occur. Hint - put road tiles behind already spawned houses, so you don't have to do these big loops to connect them to neighborhood.

Man, watching you panic and fall apart is a hilariously good time! By the way, if you want to know how to break 5k in MM, you're almost there. You have the right idea, but you haven't taken it to the proper conclusion: You don't segregate by color. You segregate by destination. It doesn't matter if you have two red destinations in similar places on the map - EACH should have its own housing cluster feeding it on its OWN LINE. This is very meta, but, the way this game works is the game will spawn a pip and the closest house to that pip will respond - simple, right? Wrong. See, if you have two houses that can feed a supermarket perfectly fine, but a pip spawns while all 4 cars are on the road for any reason, it will reach out to the next house in the chain. By doing so that makes the cars that are returning now "free" to go to other pip requests on the road - EVEN IF THEY ARE MUCH FARTHER AWAY. This causes inconsistent traffic and is why you can have a housing cluster of 8 houses unable to feed one IMAX that's on the same line - because cars from other houses are all driving there or are on the road, or worse on their way back. Ideally, you want a housing "cluster" of 8 houses all with driveways facing each other (making a *) with a motorway out directly to an IMAX, while local traffics are belt-fed individually to each destination. Don't just split the colors, split the destinations. Traffic lights Vs. Roundabouts - Ultimately you will ideally have NEITHER of these used in your city. With that said both can be used early game: Traffic lights are BEST used when you have one HEAVY line of traffic and one LIGHT line of traffic. For example if you are forced to create an intersection with 2 houses feeding a market against a line of 4 houses feeding a cinema. Because the cross traffic is infrequent, the traffic light can keep both moving at nearly full speed. The SECOND use for a Traffic Light is when you have a house that is placed directly on the street creating a crossroad (all traffic slows down at crossroads, so you want to have as few of these as possible) and you have no space to turn it to get it off the road. Putting a traffic light there allows cars to drive at full speed without slowing down as they pass the house. Roundabouts are interesting in Mini Motorways - Roundabouts, unlike Traffic lights, are able to handle medium traffic. You use these for two reasons - 1 to control the spawns of businesses and houses (as they take up 9 squares each), 2 to filter traffic to destinations. You should NEVER build a roundabout when there is going to be heavy traffic, let alone cross traffic. Roundabouts in this game get choked up when cars are in it, and that causes EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAR trying to get into the roundabout to STOP AND WAIT for the congestion to clear. TLDR - Segregate by destination, not color. Group your houses into ONE driveway if possible (as cars only slow down at intersections). Motorways are life - Feed them DIRECTLY from a housing cluster to an IMAX. Always feed a destination by the closest housing group possible (as the game progresses newer houses may spawn closer). Good luck!

If you have one motorway, and you place it, and then a car is using it, and you delete and try to place that same motorway again elsewhere, it doesn't let you - the ghost one is still "real" until the car that needed it completes its trip, then the motorway goes back in your inventory and you can place it someplace new... it works exactly the same with bridges and in fact all road tiles.

Just some advices: 1/You have to put limit to houses that means no open roads in front of them. Just groups of 4 to 6 houses straight to their defined supermarket. 2/If you let open roads in front of houses, even if they have the same color, and let them a choice of going left or right, they are going to make a mess and you will have congestion. 3/Be simple and do not be affraid to pause and think it out. It may be longer but it will pay on the long run. 4/This game is not as realistic as your engineer brain thinks and you can always add/delete roads on the go. 5/Keep this series going! I love it! Cheers

Near the end you had a huge yellow development next to the failing market but used a motorway to take another reflow development across town. In that instance it's better to redo the roads completely. For the markets you really only need 2 or 3 houses and the rest could have been directed to the other 2 yellow markets they were connected to.

Traffic lights are actually really efficient when u intentionally make a crossroads . Three advantage they have over roundabouts are roundabouts can get cluttered when many things r connected to it but traffuc lights will always let atleast some of the vehicles. You can also put them in much more narrow spaces add you get multiple of them when u get them.
