    Why not use an intermediate: print a resin master, do your surface prep and stuff, make a silicon mold, then make as many wax casts as you want, add sprues and make a porcelain mold with those, pour your metal...

    Maybe adding peroxide to the resin can enhance its burning capabilities later. Of course, this should be done cautiously to avoid altering its photosensitivity. Although I don't possess a resin printer to personally test this idea, I suggest someone interested in experimenting with it. Increasing the amount of oxygen can potentially improve the efficiency of burning.

    I watched a few videos about making a silicone mould from a 3D print, then using the mould to cast parts in two part resin. I wondered if wax could be poured into the mould instead, and after taking the hardened wax part out of the mould a small amount of clean-up should produce a part ready for investment moulding, and easier burnout. Maybe. I haven't tried this yet, but I would like to. A benefit of having a silicone mould is the ability to produce many parts cheaply, and easily.

    I think Vogman might have tried exactly that a couple years ago. I don't remember exactly but he was using 3d printing either for a pattern or a mold or something and then using it to cast wax parts

    Hey paul, Love the content. An alternate niche I haven't seen explored much by the community at large, is printing molds. I have an FDM printer, and I've been 3d printing molds which I then cast wax into. So a negative of your face is the mold, and the wax figure would retain the detail. The wax can be subjected to burnout same as metal casting. I've been using the wax negatives as forms to pour over into silicone, to make foodsafe chocolate molds. I use PETG, but I've toyed with the idea of using resin because of the detail it could capture. I haven't CAD'ed wax vents into the mods part surfaces yet, though I have toyed with the idea recently.... Would like to hear your take on it.

  • @PaulsGarage

    That sounds like a great idea. I've seen people make silicone molds for wax from printed patterns, but never a printed pattern. I would assume the mold would either require draft (so you can remove wax from a rigid mold) or try to use a flexible resin or filament so you can peel the mold off of the wax without ruining it. Maybe I'll get some flexible resin and give it a shot. I've also seen people use a certain high temp resin to make molds to directly cast metal into, but they used pewter I think. Anything higher temperature would probably ruin the mold

    All the following are ideas I'd like to try when I finally get the time to build the foundry I'd like, so don't assume I'm an expert. However I'd suggest if you want to use an FDM printer more directly for this stuff now your best bet is probably that foaming lightweight PLA as a burn out medium. Folks have used regular solid PLA for lost sand casting with reasonable results, and this will have even less plastic gunk left as there is less plastic in the first place. Or perhaps going for those cunning high metal/ceramic content filaments and then doing the post print cook that shrinks the print and leaves you a reasonably pure ceramic/metal result. Both should be reasonably able to take the high casting temperature I'd suggest - though in the ceramics case it probably wants to be well preheated before you pour in the metal. @@PaulsGarage Yeah to cast metal into a resin or silicone its almost certainly low temp white metal, though I have seen 'high temp' tolerance casting silicon and resin abuse as a single use mould for hotter melting metals mentioned. Sounded like it worked well enough to useful in a pinch, but badly enough you are far better off doing the extra step(s) to turn a print into a burnout wax or removable form for in investment or sand.

  • @PaulsGarage

    @PaulsGarage

    8 ай бұрын

    @@foldionepapyrus3441 even better than the foaming PLA is polycast PVB, it leaves zero residue behind. That's the filament I use to make air vents in this video. I think the guy i talked about used special high temperature resin and the hottest metal he tried to cast into it was a zinc alloy, so still pretty low temp stuff. Za-12 is a great metal that I love for sand casting, but I'm looking to do bronze with this for the most part.

    @@blazunlimited it will yeah. I'm printing most of the patterns and generally the big patterns will be FDM printed and sand cast and the smaller patterns will be resin printed and investment cast. I feel very confident in my sand casting ability, so now I'm working on 3D modelling and investment casting. After that will probably be machining (gotta have the lathe built obviously). Combining all the skills I can hopefully make some super cool stuff and I won't be held back by a lack of skills
