Great video and important question. You don’t want to cascade multiple digital converters if at all possible, as there are 4 types of digital errors that can stack. If you have to, then you have to- just not a first choice.

Doug, out of curiosity... why do you call it "Protools Aggregate" instead of OSX/Mac "Device Aggregate"? Protools aggregate makes it sound like people need to own/use Protools, when it doesn't have to have anything to do with Avid/Protools?

How would your recommend hooking up an Apollo X8 and a Black Lion Audio Revolution? Im also using the Black Lion Audio Microclock III XB. Thanks in advance.

hey Doug thanks for this video. I use the 8x8 symphony i/o and I think I understood some of the points that you were trying to explain for me. but is hearing monitors directly from my symphony(without my ufx) also means I'm using its d/a as well? if so, it could mean that I don't really need my ufx since I like the sound quality of the symphony more? I know i'm asking a lot lol but I just want to undertand the concept of some people using an external converter. If my vocal signal is going through the a/d of for example, I've seen in a studio that the engineer had the d/a converter from Burl audio along with his audio interface and I never asked him about his setup but I still wonder if it was for using them both at the same time or the d/a converter was being used at its own purpose exclusively. In this case yes the symphony could replace the ufx if you like its da more! So in that case you could run the ufx as the second interface for more ins and outs but choose symphony as your main interface in your daw

@@DougJenkins great videos! I must tell you you offer something different then other people follow/watch. Question for you, I have an digi 003 console that I only use and an midi controller. I have an Apollo quad with plenty ins:out. I have preamp,1176 clone,la2a clone . My question is how would you use the digi 003 other thanks outs and ins. Or it’s it just doing be a midi controller or a backup interface. Thanks!

@@mixedbyv If I am not mistaken I think you can use the digi 003 as a standalone convertor. In that case you would run adat in and out of the apollo quad, and this would add more ins and outs. Don't quote me on that, but I was sure those could run standalone

@@DougJenkins yea you can. The thing is that I don’t need more ins and outs. I guess I was thinking maybe export from the Apollo at a higher sample rate into the 003 at 44. All in all, I guess I’m trying to find a way to use it other than a midi controller or backup device! Thanks!

@@mixedbyv Yeah you could hook it up with the adat in and out, this will give you 8 more i/o I believe, as far as it being a control surface I would have to google that myself. I know those are normally wanting to be the main interface when doing that, but maybe check the preferences page, and see if you can choose it as a controller as well. Hope this help a little
