Using Fujifilm's Dynamic Range with Auto ISO

Ғылым және технология

How does Fujifilm's Dynamic Range setting work with Auto ISO? After all, Dynamic Range requires certain ISO settings to work properly - will the camera set those required settings when in Auto ISO or ignore them? We'll look at some scenarios in this video.
We're going to start with a quick refresher on both Dynamic Range and Auto ISO. To see examples of how they work together, jump to 4:00.

Great tutorial. I’ve been a Fujifilm user since the X-T1 and this is the BEST explanation of how to use Auto ISO with Fujifilm’s DR function. Bravo! To keep nice shadows without under-exposing I usually reduce my highlights rather than adjust DR. I might use DR more often because playing with highlights and shadows settings can give weird results. Thanks again.

Great review, thanks for your work! I always set DR200 and ISO400 on my X and GFX cameras, this is a fairly universal setting if you are not shooting wide open on a bright sunny day.

Yeah it’s a nice little dynamic range bump and ISO400 is just fine.

I think it's interesting to note that in high dynamic bright scenes (such as your mountain range demo), DR AUTO is still going to choose DR100 (off)/base ISO, even though this is ironically a scene where we want highlights pulled down and shadows lifted. I did some tests recently, using DR 400 and base ISO, protecting the highlights (ETTR) to the same degree, requiring only the DR100/Base ISO shot requiring exposure adjustments to match the DR400 shot. When comparing the IQ between the two files, there was not a lot in it. I'm not sure the sensor is fully ISO invariant but it did make me ponder the question 'so when does Fuji decide in AUTO DR mode when to use it? It didn't appear to me that a scene of high dynamic light would toggle it on, so then when?

Yeah, I'm surprised by its choices too. I've noticed _some_ (not a lot, but some) protected highlights when using DR400 compared to DR100 and an equivalent exposure. Regarding Auto ISO, I suspected it may have to do with what the histogram looks like, but that level of testing isn't something I'd want to do - maybe someone else will :)

I'm pretty new to photography, and the biggest DR issue I have, is that DR400 just seems like win/win... There must be a downside, but I can't see it. At that ISO, it's not as if the noise levels are going to be horrible. Am I missing something obvious?

  • @PeltierPhoto

No, for my level of "pixel-peeping," I have no problems with shooting at that ISO. However, at times, DR400 can seem too "HDR-ish" for my style, like not enough contrast, especially in a scene that's not very contrasty to begin with. You could always use DR400 just to retain that highlight detail and then work the RAW file to your liking, since it will preserve better highlight detail even in the RAW file.

There has always been a lot of confusion about using Auto ISO, and Auto DR. I used to use this setup often, but I've found in bright scenes with darker contrasting trees the camera would sometimes use a much higher ISO than needed. Even using like 6400 when it's not required. I now manually set my ISO and keep my DR setting at 100. My question is, if I always shoot manual ISO, what effect will be using Auto or 400 DR have vs. just using 100 DR?

  • @PeltierPhoto

    @PeltierPhoto

    Жыл бұрын

Oh I've never experienced it doing that...that's no good! I'm not sure I follow the question - if you're always using manual ISO with DR100, then this setting won't be activated at all. If you set it to DR400 or DR Auto, the setting will only be activated if your manual ISO is high enough. Is that what you were asking?

Yeah it’s all based on the camera’s native base ISO, and they’re all different. DR400 is available at ISO 640 in the X-T3 and X-H2S, and ISO 500 in the X-H2.

It does affect the RAW file to a small degree as well since the initial exposure is underexposed. That’s explained in the linked article about D-Rng.

The key thing for me is that I couldn't care at all if I'm forced to use a minimum ISO of 800. ISO 800 is almost undetectable unless I'm really blowing up my My concern is whether, if I stay at DR400, my ISO climbs faster than if I stayed at DR100. Because I have noticed my ISO ballooning up high a lot lately, and I've been staying at DR400. I saw tests that showed that DR400 actually improves RAW data, which is why I like staying at DR400 - but I might start respecting DR100 and DR200 more if they don't just keep my ISO super-low but also help stop it increasing as fast in low light. I need to do tests.

  • @PeltierPhoto

Yeah I don’t see much of a difference between 200 or 800 as far as noise is concerned…at least not when looking at the pictures like a “normal” person :) I use the DR setting when I need it but keep it off otherwise. Let us know what you find out if you end up doing those tests!

@@PeltierPhoto The tests on KZread were very compelling, about how much more information was retained in RAWs when using DR400 not DR100. Less clipping. So I'll be sticking with DR400 for my uses. Have done a few small checks and don't THINK it's causing that ISO ballooning I noticed. But will keep trying.

What a weird decision to show the ISO the photo will be shot in only on halfpress. You could as well permanently update the final ISO so I could compensate with a different SS or A right away. The info that I’m in e.g. A3 let’s me already know what my max iso is so displaying this info with no halfpress is useless.

  • @PeltierPhoto

@@PeltierPhoto Thanks for agreeing. 🙂 I’m quite new to Fuji (just got my X100VI) and haven’t had a real camera since my A7 so I was in between “Am I wrong” or “Is it really not that good”. I’m a UX designer so I think quite intensely about stuff like that. Do you know how to report this directly to Fuji? There are more issues. Sometimes your Exp Comp changes by itself because of different understandable reasons (e.g. DR limits) but there is no visual indicator that this happened. Marking the Exp Comp value in red like it’s already happening for A would be very useful.

@@Alias-49013 I don't...it might be worth contacting an official "X Photographer" since they seem to be able to provide feedback to Fujifilm much more efficiently. Or at least Fujifilm listens to them.
