We had that exact iMac G4 in the latter half of high school. Loved that thing, especially since it ran OS 9 natively so my games ran much better than in OS X.

Such a niche but amazing project! Now time to get it running on super old windows versions like NT

I daily drive a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz 17” model and run Discord Lite on it. It’s cool how I can still communicate with my friends even with using my 19 years old laptop.

@@gargamel3478 Funnily enough, properties were introduced with Mac OS X 10.5, so for a program targeting 10.4 or older, you can't use them. You just declare an instance variable and appropriate getter and setter methods, as you would in most other object-oriented languages. Also, newer compiler/Xcode versions will automatically synthesize properties if you use them, so declaring a property in most cases only involves a single line of code. The single property declaration takes the place of the instance variable, getter, and setter methods.

I feel like people dislike Objective C so much because of how it does a lot of things backwards from how C does them its reflective nature is amazing for tweaks though, and is why Cydia Substrate is a thing on iOS

(2:58) You could probably sideload the "Apple Color Emoji" font (Apple's emoji font) from a newer macOS release, or other emoji fonts like EmojiOne could also work, but the app would probably have to have the font coded as a fallback font for invalid characters.

This is exactly why i love the old tech community.

i personally use regularly Discord Lite on my old MacBook Air 11" from 2010 running High Sierra (which, even tho it does officially support Discord, it's REALLY slow so...), and even tho i don't use much often and it does lack some features like calling, it's still a great way to rapidly check your bud sending you screenshot of him completing Geometry Dash tracks

i recommend installing linux on such a laptop, i personally have a macbook air 2012 that can work all basic tasks as well as some less intensive gaming really well, i personally use debian and xfce

@cmposting yeah, i eventually installed EndervourOS (arch-based) with KDE Plasma and, although it didn't solve all of my issues, i feel like it's a pretty fair trade-off for performance in exchange for an up to date system

This sounds like it's more capable than the old version I have on an older tablet because that one cannot reply to messages but can @ them at least. It also has no tenor integration either, but I work around that by manually keying in tenor gif addresses.

Given that, IIRC, vanilla Discord on desktop runs over top the behemoth that is Electron it would be beneficial to have more OS-native solutions for performance and stability.

Personally, I have a big bug bear with the login screen, but not for the obvious "Well, I don't know if I trust this app with my password" reason: What if Discord starts enforcing Two-Factor Authentication? Or what if you WANT to use it with a 2FA-protected account? I hope that a future version supports OAuth2 for sign-ins, precisely to allow 2FA-protected logins.

I read “using discord on vintage mics” as in.. microphones. I was interested in hearing the audio.. all was well. Then he pulled out a G4, okay cool. Hmm... looks like a Python library is available for the Discord API. And since Python can run on a Raspberry Pi, and you can connect a Pi through serial to an old retro computer, you could theoretically use something like a Commodore 64 (admittedly using it like a dumb terminal) to chat on Discord. Or you could use a Pocket PC, or an Apple II, or a TI 99/4A...

there's a similar program for old iphones/ipods called discord classic

about two years ago i was "permanently suspended" by using ripcord and they didnt returned my account lol, idk why they didn't said "ban" instead, i really wish there was an official api/client for lite clients because desktop client uses a TON of proccess power just idling and on calls it freezes my pc, web version ain't much better to say the least.

I got so excited when I saw Discord Lite existed, but got a bit disappointed when I saw it doesn't support Windows. I can definitely get this to run on my PowerMac G3 Mirrored Door, but I really want it running on my Dell Optiplex gx280 with Windows XP. Maybe in the future... Very glad this exists though, if I decide to keep that Mac instead of sell it I'll definitely run this. Maybe we'll get Telegram in the future LOL.
