Using an old digital camera to become a better photographer

Фильм және анимация

I head out on a 5-day camping trip across West Texas and New Mexico with a $5 digicam in an attempt to learn more about myself and my photography. The camera of choice is the Olympus C740UZ, a cheap digital camera you can pickup anywhere because it's unwanted. But I think you'll agree with me that the colors and lens produce some excellent results. Somehow stripping away from my higher tech fancier cameras and getting back to the basics helped produce some of my very favorite photographs this year.

Good video. I'm an old guy (going on 74) and have been into photography all my life. One word that keeps popping up in my mind relating to photography equipment is "overwhelmed". There are SO many cameras that we've gone through in the past 50 years, and most of them will take really great photos. So, I agree that, sometimes it's interesting to constrain yourself to older equipment and force your creative juices to live within the confines of the technology in your hand at that moment. I collect Nikon and Pentax DLSRs, and I enjoy going out in the field with my old D2h (4.7-MP) as much as my Pentax K-1 (36 MP). The pixels really mean very little with all the advances in editing and AI software. I continue to get some of my best images with some of my oldest equipment.

@@daveslastchance I feel smartphones are great for a snapshot. Akin to the older Olympus stylus. But they lack depth and are too sterile for my liking. If you get the Watson battery for the d1 I get about 300 shots out of mine on both my d1h and d1x. There are also conversions for modern batteries. Breathes new life into it. I still get blown away by how fast the autofocus is on them.

@@caprature I've been reaching for the D2h more than anything nowadays. I like the smaller file sizes.. quicker to deal with, and 4.7mp is plenty for nature photography which is mostly what I do. That's a D3 not D30 in my original post.. I hardly ever use the D3.. too many cameras.

I cut out a section where I talked longer about how strange it is to capture images of my own children using digi cams that were used to take pictures of myself when I was a kid! Very nostalgic. Delighted to discover your channel. With so much over-hyped "stuff" on YT, I found your easygoing presentation a breath of fresh air and your observations on these "primitive" (by digital's dizzying leaps and bounds standards) thought-provoking. I was very stubborn about not deviating from film in those early days of digital, despite the highly touted convenience aspects. But I finally succumbed and purchased what was a then fairly "pricey" 2006-vintage Canon SD800IS, just to have something pocketable for gallery receptions and social functions. I bought it in 2007, and early the following year before a trip to Europe, I did spring for the EOS-40D D-SLR (which I still own, too). The SD800IS was one of the few digi point-and-shoots that also included a basic optical viewfinder. Being "traditional" I really appreciated that little nod to old style shooting. But the nicest surprise is that this little machine, while challenged at ISO 400 and above in terms of splotchy noise on dark solid colors, is the fact that at ISO 80 (or even 100) it is quite remarkable, and those Canon colors are delicious. And, yes, it still goes along on some shoots with the "big boys." So nice you turned your four-year old daughter loose with your little Olympus. She has a good eye and I know you'll encourage her to pursue photography if she continues to love it. I just subscribed and will look forward to more of your videos. P.S: Kudos on your delivery and clear speech - good choice of mic from what I've heard on the two videos I watched tonight. Also, you have a deft touch in selecting music that enhances without being overwhelming in level or otherwise irritating. Other producers can learn from your approach - and totally unsnobbish approach to photography.

Great video; thankyou. It really is liberating to jump off the ‘latest-greatest’ camera race. I remember lots of these cameras first time around and upgraded as the new ones emerged. Back then i guess we saw the limitations of these early digitals as a work in progess, leading to where we are today. I think now, having saved several of these: Canon G7, SD1000, S90, Fuji F30 etc., i now pick them for the aesthetic they give me. The look, the vibe and yes, the nostalgia of remembering buying them, new. I also enjoy using them as a hobby, no desire to be accountable for the quality, or lack of it in my case, as a photographer! Thanks again.

The camedia cameras by Olympus were good little cameras. I used to shoot film at first, and my first digital was the little camedia d-150, with 1.3 screaming megapixels. That camera was good for it’s day, with exception of much in the way of controls. Years later a friend sold me his Olympus camedia c-5060 wide zoom camera, it was a 5.1 meg camera, that could be expanded to almost 8 megs with certain settings. This camera had many useful settings that helped greatly in getting more creative with my shooting. And like you said about the one you used, the one thing that always amazed me about the camedias was the great color that they produced. I almost never had to do anything to the colors straight out of the camera when editing the shots. 🙂📸

CCD sensors or older sensors tend to have wicked good colors, CCD sensors even with cmos being avaliable produce a very different color tonality. A lot of people dont realize CMOS was invented first they used it and then developed CCD after the fact and realized it was technically better, CMOS is used today due to being cheap.

20 years ago I tried to buy the sibling of the C740 , the C750. I was scammed by a mail order camera shop and lost 360 dollars. Since that time I have owned a few digicams and now DSLRs. But it has nagged at me all those years that I lost that money and did not get to experience that camera. Just this week I bought a C750 from Good Will online. 7.99 for the sale price and with shipping and handling a bit over 22 dollars. It is in pristine condition. I have not been able to get the images into my laptop though because I am waiting for a reader for the XD card to get here. After all these years I finally have closure on that bad experience I had. Thank you for your review. Its a shame that other wise competent tech gets let behind so quickly. I think the C750 will go with me a lot of places. Peace...

Some of those images are so sharp you could cut your fingers on them! On a serious note though, some of the images were fantastic. Smores aren't popular in the UK and I'm not even sure what they are. Kinda look like toasted marshmallows. Smartphone photography is a totally legitimate form of photography. I did most of my travelling through China/DPRK with my Galaxy S8 since my bigger cameras attracted too much attention. I've even managed to sell some of those photos to media outlets. If the composition is good, and cropping minimal, it shouldn't matter.

Thanks again for a great video. In Danish its called "støvbold" = Puffball. It's really interesting and as a kid i found one of the biggest in the country about the size of a basketball. The spores however are not healthy to inhale so it generally recommended not to step on them. They taste good and can be cooked - but not in this state :-D

3:30 campfire marshmallows are really well known in Europe. However s'mores not really. I discovered them this year thanks to a TV show. I figured, since marshmallows good, chocolate good and cookies good, together they must be goot to. Boy was I wrong, it's a lot better than just the sum of it's parts. Incredible flavor that I didn't at all anticipate. The over the top sweetness is the most American thing I have ever tasted.

  • @snappiness

Over the top sweetness is definitely an American thing! I've only traveled out of the states once to Italy, and it was like getting my body cleansed of sugar. I came back and ate something I normally am fine with and spat it out it was too sweet. 😂 Still a very sweet treat, but we use 85% chocolate for our smores and that makes it better.

Especially now that I know I can afford to acquire that elusive PT-022 case, which I salivated over for the entire time I owned the camera, but could never afford due to cost & availability. Also, @snappiness -- I feel like I should mention that this particular video (okay, really all of your videos) has solidified your channel as my newest "favorite" channel. Lol - I tracked this camera down because of this video and bought one. I discovered something you don't mention in you videos the hard way. While the camera was cheap man oh man was I in for some sticker shock when I went to get a memory card. This camera requires a XD memory card that is 256 MB or less. Since this is such old tech, the memory cards are rare and VERY expensive. So yeah it may be a cool $5 to $10 camera but you're going to have to spend $70 - $90 dollars as of this writing to get a memory card that will work with it if you don't already have one. I also had a similar and worse experience with buying a Nikon Coolpix 8400 - sheesh. Getting into these old cameras definitely can run you a huge bill even if the camera itself it cheap.

That's a good point! I made another video, called something like "what to know before buying an old digicam" and that was one of the points. I wish I would've remembered to throw it in this one! Definitely better to know the memory card type and either already have one, or look for a camera that has it bundled in the lot. That's crazy that by themselves they cost so much!!
