Very helpful tip. This works where standard coax testers don't as in with open wires. Thanks so much!

I used this trick to figure out which of the 3 or 4 old coax cable were useless and which one should have been connected to the splitter. saved me about 45 minutes of installing new cable ends, hooking up and and then running across the apartment to see if I guessed right. Thanks.

Excellent solution for connecting a toner to coax. You inspired me to make my own, with a couple of modifications. I left 1/4" of dielectric exposed at the stripped end, and used about 3/4" of heat shrink to cover the dielectric and some of the outer jacket, ensuring no possibility of contact with the shield at the stripped end. Since I plan on using this more with CCTV system, I used a BNC connector instead of F, and added a 3mm power pigtail and used heat shrink to keep it all together. I don't expect to be toning the power leads, but this will give me bare wires for checking power.

Hey , i would also be using it for a CCTV installation. Do i have to strip the connector off the top or could i just connect the one end to the tip and the other around the shielding ?

what toner works even through splitters.

i have the same toner and have tried toning coax lines on the job. i do it differently in terms of connecting the negative end; i peel back the jacket and connect the black end to the outer cooper and the red end to the inner cooper and i make sure they don't touch. however, when i do it this way, i always have a signal that weakens as the distance increases. i wonder if the way you connected it prevents that or have you experienced the same issue when the length of the coax line increases. also, does it only work when you touch your wand on the other end of the line or can you touch the jacket and get a tone?

The polarity doesn't matter as long as you don't have a short as that really kills the tone. It's just a frequency so you don't need to touch the other end just be near it as it will induce into nearby cable... but loudest on the correct pair. The more resistance the lower the sound

does the lenght of the cable affect the effectivity of tracing capability of the tracer

what about tracing cables with a splitter on the end, which kills the tone

Yeah you can't have any splitters in the line it won't work like that

be careful with using a progressive toner as it does not tell you when there is a splitter on the line( for example the attic) the pocket toner will not tone when a splitter is attach but a progressive toner will. so make sure its a direct coaxial connection if using this toner.
