This information is going straight into my tool box. Thank you. Ive had power trouble in this house and I was concerned it was on the frits again but its just the bulbs. Thank god for that.

Thank you very much for showing me how to use a meter. It's ironic that my dad is an electronics engineer, and taught his students how to use a meter yet he didn't teach me. You video was short and to the point.

Also, the tread of an Edison screw bulb is the neutral and the pin on the bottom is connected to the phase

+lab rat You probably have your answer by now since a year has gone by, but I believe sodium lamps run by two electrodes exciting sodium atoms to produce light. This means that it uses a gas, not a filament.

Bill, can a CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) type bulb be checked with a multimeter? I have some CFL's with four pins, and I can get a reading with the ohms settings on my multimeter, but I don't know if this actually is determinative as to if the bulb is good.

No. They light up from mercury-gas vapor not a filament.

Please help. I am wanting to change my MES bulbs in my jukebox cd player and have been told if i don`t use the right ones I could blow many of the components. There are many bulbs on Ebay displaying voltage and amps (mA) etc. When i use a multimeter on the current working bulbs, I am get 8 Ohms. So which volt and amp bulbs should i buy? Thanks in advance.

i just listen for the beep on my meter and never worry about resistance readings..if it beeps it works plain and simple especially when testing entire branch circuits with it screwed in...when i'm at the panel and i disconnect the wires the box and do a continuity check for short circuits or open circuits...doesn't work if ya got cfL's or florescent tubes though, i learned..

You are testing for continuity - multimeters only beep below a certain Ohms reading to indicate continuity. So you may test something that is SUPPOSED to have a higher reading, and even if perfectly fine, it may never beep. This will depend on your multimeter brand and model.

Bill or anyone reading this, is there a reason why the continuity setting doesn't work on testing the light bulbs? I tried using continuity on good and bad bulbs but neither case showed continuity.

They might have shown an Ohms reading, the continuity buzzer just beeps / indicates when a reading is below some arbitrary resistance (Ohms) value that the multimeter manufacturer chooses. Your multimeter manual probably says what this figure is. So for a good bulb, it may register an ohms reading but not a 'continuity' reading. Generally I only use continuity for testing where I expect there to be direct continuity i.e. only the resistance of the wires.

He is checking the resistance guys. That has nothing to do with Watts. All that is telling you is that the filament which is the electrical path through the light bulb is still good. If it has resistance then there is a complete circuit and it is good. If it is open then the path is broke and electricity can no longer flow. Think of it like a fuse.
