How to Test for a Faulty Light Bulb
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Video tutorial on how to test a light bulb using a multimeter. A light bulb cannot always be visually inspected to determine if it needs to be replaced. You can also swap one bulb with the other to determine if it needs to be replaced as well, but sometimes you may not have that option. This particular tutorial was done on a 12v application and can be done both on incandescent and halogen bulbs. When testing halogen bulb, make sure you do not touch the lens. The oil from your skin can cause a hot spot in the lens if the bulb is still good and this will shorten it's life span. If you do touch it, clean the bulb with rubbing alcohol. Some bulb designs may vary, especially if they have more than one filament, please refer to a wiring or bulb model diagram to determine what each pin connects to.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-multimeter
-light bulb
Procedure:
-remove the bulb from the vehicle
-using a multimeter, set it to the lowest ohms/resistance setting
-touch the test probes together to ensure they work correctly
-depending on the bulb type, touch each probe on the terminals
-if the multimeter does not register a reading, the bulb is faulty and needs to be replaced
-if the bulb has resistance/continuity, then it is functioning correctly

This video is good only if you already know how to use a multimeter which is not my case. It would be to have an explanation of how to set up and turn the multimeter on.
Wow, someone with a check mark that actually answers viewers questions. Good job, thanks.

To make sure that your m.m. is functioning, it's advisable to touch the leads together to check them for continuity before you begin. Also, I like to use the diode setting for the audible beep. Cheers!
Nice. straight to the point.

How do you test a halogen tube type bulb all by itself? The kind that sorta look like a neon tube. Thanks for posting this helpful video.
The resistance readings that I get from my headlight are not in line with the manufacturer specs and don't even compute with my amperage readings (about 4.7 A at 14V) according to Ohm's Law. Any idea what I am missing? Thanks again for the tutorial.
How do you test a H3 bulb? I have it set to BEEP if there's continuity
hi, my bulb low beam is not working, but the high beam is working fine. I want to know how where to put the multi meter connectors to check each low and high beam thank you Tony
thanks for the video. I have this multimeter and now how to test my bulb.

Glad to help out :)
question! getting an aircraft light blub to work off 12 volts that require 28 volts? Is there an easy fix? It's a small bulb like in your video here. Here's the info on the back of the bulb (Micro lamps ML- Cage code 61951 M6363/2-2 28.0 Volts. Thanks
Would be nice if you show where to set the multimeter to instead of just telling people every multimeter is different especially for beginners
thanks great info, i am wiser thanks to you .

I have a car lightbulb that filament intact, so I tested continuity and no. Only think I think is the lead? Pointy part wore out?
As you did in the first bulb, you said that it's not working and should be replaced. Once I did the same thing with mine by the multimeter and it shows no signal but when I plug it to a battery it works! why is that? I'm sure that I put the multemeter on 200 ohm! What do you think?

+حامد الناصر The filament could be broken, but when you apply voltage it reconnects. It's most likely on it's way out.
Thanks much

Thanks for the video. The single filament bulb I have, doesn't light up on the car. When I took it out, noticed the glass has some black sooth on it, however, there is continuity. What is your diagnosis for this bulb please. Thanks.

Black sooth sounds like it’s burnt out.
Hey man I got one of those really skinny halogen bulbs I don't know where the connection is (I don't see any copper or metal) where should I test it? Do I need to take the socket out as well?

Yes you will need to remove the bulb from the socket. Don't forget to subscribe!

So my socket is only reading 0.1V at the 200volt setting on multimeter. Doesn't seem right because it should be reading 12V. Any other tests to rule out the wires and just be the socket?

Hi, i changed brake light bulb but whne i press brake pedal, the tail light bulb glows with high power instead of glowing brake light bulb. Can you suggest what could have gone wrong..??

I saw the video you posted. There maybe a wiring issue or could have been the wrong bulbs, either before or now. I know some European vehicles have a two stage brake lights, when they're pressed normally they illuminate as they should and for hard braking, they activate another circuit for brighter lights.
