The reason for finding the direction for something in the distance is to pick a waypoint that you can or need to get to. You find a landmark in your heading, put the compass away until you get there and repeat as needed. Works great along with a topo map.

I was reading a navigation manual at the army surplus store and you are apparently supposed to use it to navigate around and object as well. Hard to explain though, made sense while I was reading it.

I use my compass for basic directions. To make sure I am headed in one direction until I can find a road I recognize that would get me home. I’m an old lady with nothing to do so I drive around the UP a lot in good weather just to see what’s there.

Basic video but might confuse newcomers to basic nav

Friend I am a former U.S Marine infantry squad leader. I don't mean to be unkind but you do not know what you're talking about. Not only did you mispronounce the name of the compass, you did not adequately explain the many uses of a lensatic compass. I suggest you get a good book on how to use a compass before you call yourself teaching others how to use a compass. All compasses are not created equal.

The compass by which all other compasses are measured is a Cammenga, period.

Wow. It's always good to know at least two land marks and their direction so you can triangulate your position on a map. That way you can set your heading to your destination. It looks like your compass doesn't even allow an adjustment for declination. Get rid of these toys, buy a real one and learn navigation. Don't take it lightly. It can save your life some day.

Hey man! I have the exact same compass and you know how it is glow in the dark, theres another use for the magnifying glass. So you know theres the hole with the wire through it. The light will go through that hole and the magnifying glass will refract the light all around the inside to kinda “charge up” all the green areas inside so that you wont get lost at night. Sorry im bad at explaining.

I tend to use landmarks when I am hiking in unexplored terrain. It is a good idea to know which direction those landmarks are as well as the general direction one is traveling.

Wow. I feel dumber now than I did before I watched the video. What did I just see?

I suspect that the real reason that this video was presented from this guy's coffee table and not outdoors was that he wasn't able to find his way out of his own house. Please do yourself a favour and learn to read a map and navigate with a compass before you set off into any kind of outdoor scenario. It is a skill that one day may make the difference between you coming home and not.

With all due respect my friend you'll never know when you're going to need a compass such as that ''fancy" lensatic compass and know how to use it.

I've used this compass in reverse engineering to get back to my original destination. It's a great compass. It's not the tool that is not working, but the user.

“Survival for the poor” I first off would have to say that the one thing that doesn’t cost money is reading and information. You haven’t the slightest idea of how to properly navigate with a compass. After watching your video I’d be willing to bet that a fourth grade Cub Scout probably has more survival skills than yourself. The idea that you see yourself fit enough to produce “survival” videos is laughable at best and at worst scary. Regardless of someone’s financial means it doesn’t cost anything to do things the knowledgeable and correct way. See, that advice was free.

You must not do any orienteering. The accuracy you get with this compass serves a big purpose if you have a specific location to get to.

Pretty much the last person I would chose to be the navigation guy on an operation or a general back country trip.

Although useless information, was entertaining, perhaps by this time and juncture he has gotten wise and learn how to use this incredible instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic position or cardinal directions, in a nut shell, that will give you a better idea of where you are and where you want to go without loosing (yourself) direction. Prepare yourself when given instructions to others, you could be encouraging others to be in danger. Good luck in this and other endeavors.

Knowing the Degree is how you communicate positions. It's also accurate enough to calculate distances with triangulation.

What is the shorter line on the bezel for? It looks like it's on a 45-degree offset from the long line, so it might be for triangulation? I have searched for information for the lensatic (I have one since Boy Scout days) so all I bothered with was the wire sight.

I have no idea. A military compass has a fixed line. Both of the lines on the bezel turn. I suspect one is to assist setting the bearing and the other is rotated over the Magnetic needle to allow you to follow a bearing. I looked at one today at Lee Valley. I was confused. The instructions are no help.

How come when i put my compass, same in video, next to my cellphone..and use a cellphone compass app...they both read different headings....the engineer one especially is off ..when U move the object..the compass goes wild. WHY!?

The compass would be great to use as a position marker in a big out situation drawing maps and knowing where enemy camps are when scouting mark there location is very helpful to navigate around other camps

Speaking for suburban and city dwellers: I know this stuff because it's my interest. No one teaches this in school. Parents do not teach this. Friends do not teach this. How are they supposed to know? In environments where everything is built on grids and there are signs, it's easy for people to forget that most of the world ain't that way. That being said, it is odd to put out a vid on compasses if you don't know about them.

Great, man. This is precisely what I'd hoped this video would be. I think it would be helpful for reporting plumes of smoke while out hiking. Especially if you're near a known landmark. Tell the ranger you're at Conkle's Hollow and spot a forest fire 90° East, ya' know? Then just estimate how many miles and a helicopter could spot the plume and BAM. You've prevented a massive forest fire. Thank you so much. I'm a visual learner and you totally just taught me how to use this thing. Cheers.

From what I understand about compasses, all of them are good for finding a general direction, especially on a cloudy day in the middle of nowhere. It's how accurate you need it where the difference lies. But to get to a specific point in a map you need to know before hand where Magnetic North & True North in relation to each other before you even head over to the middle of nowhere. These more complex compasses can help you travel in a straight line (fir the most part) to a specific direction on a map. The lensatic compass in this video is only $5 in Walmart. Though i noticed there are 2 lines marjed on the clear face of the compass. I just wonder why they put two? 🤔

That's how u tell the difference between magnetic North and true North.

If he continues at that heading, he will bump into his wife's vase collection, knocking them to the ground. This compass just saved his life.

Leaned the area with the wire down onto the split part with magnifyer and it illuminated the direction. Also, button on bottom left of my Grandfather's stills the compass from moving...making it much much easier to determine direction.👍🏼👊🏼

Have more than one of anything, you can loose or break it. And having one of those big one will, and can come in handy when you need it. We might not need it now a days, but when we get hurled back into the dark ages we will need to know how far something is away or the degree.

Dude, I have the exact same compass, went through my grandad stuff and found this old ass satalite finder for signal strength with TV with that compass in it

If you don't know where you are you can find landmarks and determine their directions from your location and then pinpoint your exact location on a mal. But you need a map that displays the landmarks you chose and probably a calculator if you want to be accurate and in a survival situation you probably won't have most of these items.. just wanted to mention it

I have a sunto with the peeping whole, that does the job without squirming the eye, which work great for me on my hiking trips. Though i always bring along my oregon 750... too..... plus extra batteries...

if your lost in the mountain and you see signs of civilization in the distance wouldnt it be helpfull to know what direction a road or a village is as a pick up point ect ect....

Here's what ya do, go to your local Army surplus store & buy a Map Reading and Land Navigation (FM 21-26) manual. It explains in great detail how your compass in conjunction with a grid map or topographical map works. Or.... Go to your nearest recruiting office and sign up for the Marine Corp. infantry or US Army infantry. This will help you with that compass. ;)

you was suppose to drop the top down on the 1/2 tilted bottom section not keep it at a 90 degree, 1 degree off and you are off 2 miles if you ever used it.

What is the shorter yellow line used for?

You really need to learn why you need to know the directional reading is needed for. A topographic map and such would give you a good indicator on where you are. Once you know the reading of several specific places (mountain, river, ect), you can pin point your location on the map. Anyone who hikes alot should know this information as it is very useful. You could do the same with a regular compass, but not as accurately. And as for a compass, you get what you pay for. Some of the cheap ones on key chains are nowhere near accurate enough to even find North as I have had several pointing somewhere East of North, like over 40° off. Some are right on untill it's been banged around in your pocket with a bunch of other metal objects like keys and coins. Get a good topographic map of your area and learn to use the compass properly.

The mark on the bezel is used to set the compass to follow an azimuth (bearing). For example, say you've done map work and know you need to follow a 40 degree magnetic azimuth back to your campsite. Right now you're in dense forest, or otherwise don't have a clear view to sight a distant landmark. You open your compass all the way and turn it (and possibly you) until 40 degrees is under the index (long, fixed) line. Then, you turn the bezel until the smaller mark is lined up with the needle (make sure it's the north end, or you'll go in exactly the opposite direction). Now, your compass is set to follow a 40 degree azimuth. Keeping the compass out, now you start walking, keeping an eye on your compass. So long as the needle and the mark on the bezel are aligned, your sight wire is pointing at your desired azimuth.

Correct info. Lee Valley has this style with two bezel lines. Both bezel lines rotate with the bezel. I figured out the long line is just to assist with obtaining an azmith and the shorter line to fix over the Magnetic needle.

Thanks for the effort. I'm sure by now you've seen the error of your ways. Lol. I've been lost in the woods and no compass. It'll never happen again. But, your RIGHT about one thing. A compass is no good if you don't know how to use it.

Well Randy, I listened to this instructor when I got lost when living in Utah, now I live in Poughkeepsie. NY thanks to him. But I'll keep my Lensatic Compass and wear it with my house key chain HA!

As others have mentioned here combining use of the compass with a topo map is the real tool for identifying your location and finding your path.

I need to add that those tiny button-sized compasses are very inaccurate and unreliable. One should not rely on them. There are very many very good videos on using a compass on KZread. This one is surprisingly . . . . of limited value.

If you notice, there's also an eye slot at the top of the lid and also a peep hole below it.I lower the lid to set up the alignment of the guide wire and the adjustable indicator so you don't have to adjust it each time. Sometimes I set that line as a return indicator at night. Thanks for the video.

How to use the Lens static app...

The purpose isnt to find the direction of an object, the purpose is to identify yourself as the object, and what direction you are headed.

I've actually been lost in the woods cuz there wasn't a trail. If I had a compass I could have stayed on track in the right direction instead of losing my way trying to get thru the thick ground cover... a 15 minute walk... I was lost for almost 2 hours!

You should look at reallybigmonkey video he begs people to not use those little compass says there garbage and I would have to agree. The lens lensatic compass is great to use with a map if you know 2 terrain features you can shoot a bearing over to one make a little line on your map then over to the other feature make a little line where they cross is where your at on the map.

Other people will be looking for it But they won't find it. Because you hid a really good. You know where it's at using your compass.

Forget it.. write it off.. it's lost forever.. he'll never see it again.. unless he ties a string from where he started and lets the spool unwind as he goes, it's not even a guarantee he'll find his way back to where he started from.
