Using a Combo Amp as a Cab!

Музыка

In this video I walk through how I made a 1x12 cab from an old Fender combo. Furthermore I also provide a motivation for doing it. I'm aware it is possible to buy cheap 1x12 cabs.

Thanks really helpful...it sounded like was talking about the components being like little building. I’m trying to make a fender champion into a cab bc it has a Celestion midnight speaker that sounds great. I want to add a switch so I can still use it as a combo, but plug in an external amp (an orange head) that circumvents the fender amplifier circuit.

I think that's not too hard to do, but make sure you don't have the combo switched on when you are using it with another head. An amp always needs a load , otherwise it can btreak/fry itself, or even be dangerous from what I understand. Maybe look into a way of connecting a permanent dummy load to the amp section of the combp/cab, so if you switch it on accidentally it's not gonna vlow up, just in case.

I want to do the same. I'd imagine it would just need an extra set of leads soldered on, and mount the input on the back. Maybe you could have a cover or something for when they aren't in use, but I'm not sure it would matter.

@@RByrne have you looked into Cliff Jacks? I put one between amp output and speaker on a Fender solid state amp. With nothing plugged into the output the signal flows from amp to internal speaker. When you plug an instrument cable in the internal speaker is bypassed and the external cab takes over. Of course if one forgot to plug into the external then badness might happen ... but it seems to work.

Hey this was really helpful but I have a question Do I have to disconnect the combo amp connection from the speaker, or can I leave it attached and solder the new jack onto the horizontal poles of the speaker? (and then use my head while the combo amp's power is unplugged)

I get what you want to do, but it sounds like the power could then partially flow back into the combo potentially frying it. I'm not an expert though, so maybe it wouldn't. athough it seems like it would to me. A solution would be installing some kind of switch, but if you do that don't forget to switch it to the right source otherwise you might turn your amp on with no speaker load and that's very bad to from what I understand.

@@danielclark1859 If you use a Switching Jacks which disconnects the contacts once you plut a cable in, you could put the jack in series of the existing path to the speaker and as soon you plug another amp in, the combo amp is disconnected. It's really easy.

You don’t have to remove the amp part necessarily. I would remove the wires going to the speaker from the amp part. Then connect cables from input jack to speaker. Just make sure the amp can’t be turned on afterwards, as it can break if it’s turned in without a load (load meaning speaker being attached).

A speaker is a speaker, you don’t have to. Just make sure the load matches. I just wanted a greenback in this instance that’s all 👍🏻.
