Used Car Review: Volkswagen Up

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Volkswagen Up might be among the smallest cars one the road, but it is still surprisingly capable. For a start it can fit four people, plus the boot is a reasonable size and running costs are tiny. Where the Up really impresses, however, is in how much fun it is to drive. There's also good news for those thinking about buying a used example, because the Up is proving to be a reliable little car, as Chris Knapman explains in this CarGurus Used Car Review.
Written review:

Pros
Fun to drive around town
Competent out of town
GTI model is a great warm hatch
Cons
Watch out for neglected examples
Mechanically identical Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii are cheaper to buy
Basic infotainment system
The CarGurus verdict
One of the best small city cars of this era or any other, the VW Up demonstrates that very affordable cars needn’t be short on ability or charm. Into a very compact footprint it crams a spacious cabin, relatively high-grade materials and switchgear, plenty of kit (as long as you avoid the most basic models) and a handsome exterior design. Even the seemingly miserly 1.0-litre engines are actually energetic and full of pep.
The earliest cars are now more than a decade old and, as long as they’ve been cared for, they’ll have plenty of life left in them. Driving enthusiasts of all persuasions will find a good deal to like about the very nippy GTI variant, while in the city the battery-powered e-Up is in its element. Fun to drive, safe in an accident and surprisingly grown-up on the motorway, VW’s tiniest hatchback is a masterstroke.

I have a 2014 up and I’ve had it for a year and it’s a nice little car. I drove it 200+ kilometres in a stretch once and it was fine. I love how tiny it is, very easy to park.

Excellent review - far better than the others out there. I have managed to do 74 mpg before, so it is very ecological. I have also had 3 others in the car with me at the same time with no complaints except the back windows. I love my little Up! and I am very protective of it

I have the 60 hp 5 door, great car for the motorways & long distance driving as well as in town. I do long distance trips in it with the kids and a 6 man tent and all the camping gear all stuffed into the boot. Only complains I have is it often needs the aircon on to help demist if its cold, the tail gate glass is always wonky at the bottom they never seemed to sort that. The daytime running lights are built into the headlight so if they go the whole lamp needs replaced (mine were done under warranty). 1st gear has never been great to get into once stopped, reverse just needs a pause, then select. Overall totally delighted with the car and will keep it till its worn out...

I love my up. Club edition with privacy glass, nice alloys, cruise , p sensors and sat nav...and heated seats. I think that's great for a city car. Can't praise it enough.

I drive the 75 hp citigo with the asg. Its definetely not a good transmission but if you dont want to shift yourself, or like me dont want to think about a third pedal, its still okay. TBH I just didnt learn clutch control etc. properly in my driving lessons so I wanted a automatic car with a great fuel economy. And that is what you get, not more, not less. I have an urban consumption of around 5,5l (in the morning less traffic 4,5l, in the afternoon lots of traffic 6,5l, all per 100km). On longer Autobahn Trips with speeds max at 130 I get arount 5l flat. If you drive the car in manual mode the gearshifts are a little faster in my opinion. For the moment its fine, but as soon as I'm done with my studies there will be something with a real DSG :D

I have the seat mii sport 2013 from new. Done 89.000 miles over the 7 years all iv changed is brake pads, disks and tyres. Very reliable never had any problems also great fun to drive. I always get 55plus mpg in mine without trying. Iv saved to buy a new car now either hyundia i10 our another one of these either vw skoda or seat. I want a change but also knowing how good this car has been over the years should I get another, trying to decide.

VW Up is not only much more reliable, its also better build quality, less noise and slightly quicker if you get the 75hp or even one of the turbo versions which can be chiptuned to some very good power. It feels like the much more expensive car. The only downside of the UP to the aygo imo is that the aygo has a nice touchscreen and bluetooth audio which the old up doesn't have. Up is also a better looking car imo and feels more premium if u get the high up. I am comparing my VW up 75hp from 2012 to my friends Aygo from 2016 (both top spec)

@@Supraifyification Much more reliable? You do know out if all cars in the world toyota has the best reliability scores of all car brands. The up looks nice but a friend if mine bought a brand new Golf GTI and 2 weeks later the turbo broke so i dont think VW has a change against Toyota when it comes down to being reliable. But youre right when saying vw has better build quality the aygo is mostly plastic from the inside like a car you would in the bottom of cereal box

@@Ramon_92 all vw's small and non turbo engines are extremely reliable, there is no issues with the VW Up 75hp n/a except the gearbox on the first generations which i have where u need to let go of the clutch and engage it again to go into reverse (which isn't a problem either unless ur extremely impatient) i think vw's reliability problems comes from USA where they only offer the larger engines and turbo engines. The Toyota aygo is developed with Citroen & Peugeot (brands not known for reliability at all) Don't compare an up (3 cyl n/a) to a golf (4 cyl turbo) they are completely different cars. You will not regret getting the UP if you can pay that little extra compared to the aygo. It feels faster and sportier (Even though its still slow as fuck) has way less cabin noise and is just the nicer car. They are extremely reliable, everybody says so on the internet and so do i as a 1st gen owner. Yes VW as a brand isn't known to be reliable, but the Up is. Good luck with buying a car :)

@@Supraifyification Up is no use of getting where i live (western europe ) there all either sold out or they stopped making them because of the high prices a brand new polo is about 3k more than a new up is atm so they stopped making them as nobody would buy them anymore . But thanks for the tips .

@@Ramon_92 im in scandinavia and same happened here, basically people started buying the class over cause they got cheaper (polo, peugeot 208 etc) so they discontinued the skoda and seat and i think the up might have been too recently. But still as a used car they are really great and the engine is extremely reliable.

I dont agree with you in which motor you should chose for long distance. The 75 horsepower engine takes far more Rpm in all gears compaired with the 60 horsepower engine. The 75 horsepower engine USE therefore more fuel and noise level is higer.

  • @nazimelon6653
    @nazimelon66532 жыл бұрын

3:17 Correction here: for longer drives, the 60 hp version is better. The engines are frankly identical, the 75hp power advantage only starts at 5000rpm, which you do not use on the highway. But, the 60hp version has a longer 5th gear, meaning lower revs at speed.

I seen 2nd users ups with 123,000 miles on the clock. Must be reliable to stay on the road to clock those miles. Parts are a reasonable price. Wife and I bought a CitiGo each early April 20022, 7 year and 8 years old. Running well.

I have a 7 year old 75hp CitiGo, and the wife an 8 year old CitiGo. Both are great to drive, very nippy. Plenty of zip if the revs are right. And mine has electric mirrors. The Garmin PID entertainment centre plays Spotify from my mobile via Bluetooth…… can’t beat it.
