In today's video I'm showing you how to use warm and cool colors in to significantly improve your paintings!
Reference photo: www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showp...
🎨 WARM AND COOL COLORS 🎨
I wasn't originally planning for this process to revolve around the usage of warms and cools.
But just around the start of the painting process, this is where my intuition and natural color selection took me.
I think this one has some very interesting insights you may enjoy.
Also wanted to remind you again, if you want to learn how to draw like this, be sure to check out my beginners' drawing course:
bit.ly/2Gn4rOIDrawYT
🎨 A LONG PROCESS 🎨
This entire process is in real time. Hopefully this will give you a better understanding of how I approach these kinds of works.
Also, I tried (again) utilizing two angles ^_^
I can understand why the top one is more comfortable, but I thought I'd spice it up a little.
Let me know what you thought of that.
I hope you enjoy this one, and we'll talk again real soon!

I realize this demo is 4 years old but of all the paintings I’ve watched you create this one is the most beautiful to my eyes. Love the experiment with colors instead of a slavish adherence to the photo. Bravo!

I know this is an old video, but maybe someone in the thread can use this tip: if u want a sharp edge/straight line to create contrast with the soft edges, simply lay a scrap piece of watercolor paper down next to the line/stroke/area u r painting. U can do this over painted areas, even mildly damp ones. I typically have a 5”x 8” (approximately) piece I cut & keep close by to test colors on before I apply paint to my art now & then when color is important. So i also use that piece for my straight edge. Its like putting tape down, but quicker & no adhesive messing up ur painted surface. Works like a charm!! A stroke of paint, lift the scrap paper away & boom 💥 a perfect hard edge. U can also use this trick with clean water on ur brush in place of paint to remove color while maintaining that hard edge. Remember: Warm colors protrude & cool colors recede. Experiment with this color theory & watch how it enhances the illusion of depth. For the record, every tip I share came from another painter sharing along the way. Just passing it on! Thank u for the content. Still watching in 2022……Missouri, U.S.A. Stay well my friends ✌🏻🎨

Lovely to see how your colour sense is developing. Your experiments are a good reminder that the way we perceive things in terms of colour is not absolute, it is totally relative. A colour can appear what it really isn't. It blows up all your logic circuits sometimes! Thanks for yet another thought provoking video.

I love the style of your painting. It is so lively. ( I am only beginning watercolour and still trying to get over the fact that blue and yellow don’t make green. In my world it often makes mud!) I don’t know if you are familiar with the work of Asuman and Atanur Dogan. They also use lots of colour in their paintings both architectural and portraiture. I watch a lot of videos of other artists including Steve’s at Mind of Watercolour also Angela Fehr and many other artists but I am drawn to the way that you use so much colour and how it makes your work look so interesting and different. Thank you for sharing this video. I found the commentary particularly helpful in understanding your thought processes whilst executing this piece and has given me a lot to think about.

I love this painting, and you're so right about blue shadows! I kind of hadn't consciously seen it, and it's conventional thinking, right, but why be conventional??! So, I don't think you should go too much into realism, my feeling is that if you paint, say, a horse: everyone knows what a horse looks like. So what's the point? Free colour work like this one brings something new to the subject. So: that's my take, anyway ☺ Be free!

I agree, pen and ink can be a little easier in that sense (: I choose to work with pencil because it suits my desired watercolor style, which is more natural and less lines-based. But I do have a warm spot in me for pen sketching, urban sketching and incorporating watercolor into those sketches.

Hellow Liron, as a fellow watercolor artist! meaning i like to paint in that medium, the best! I dicovered that there is no set "law," hat you can"t mix the mediums! Liron, I just LOVE this tutorial! As a beginner, I find it difficult to determine the colors of my initial wash. For example, if I looked at this reference photo, I would tend to stick with the colors that I see, i.e., burnt sienna, buff titanium, cobalt blu, etc. How do you choose to incorporate winsor blue, carbazol violet, etc. into the painting? Thank you so much.

Hmmm, I usually try to straighten them. I look at these lines as vertical, and treat them that way too ^_^ That's actually a great observation. The reason I do it that way is that if I were there in real life, the skewing would indeed not occur.

I think you can improve it trying différent papers. If you work wet on wet, you can try to saturate your paper with water, let it soak a few minutes and saturate it again. For the palette, i guess the only way is to make larger amounts of mixture. Good luck ! Cheers . Frederic

  • @LironYan

    @LironYan

    6 жыл бұрын

You've received some good suggestions ^_^ I would also add: 1. Try using small amounts of paint out of the tube, if possible - instead of filling up a palette. 2. A few minutes before you start painting, spray some water on your palette. It will slowly reawaken the paints and prepare them for painting. 3. Sometimes different regions can require different approaches. You may HAVE to paint a little faster than others. See this as a blessing in disguise (; I hope this helps!

Get realistic but don’t be a photograph copier. That is so boring. Art like that turns me off immediately and it is so obvious. Values are so important to master and difficult for me. My paintings alternate between 3 pale values or 3 garishly dark values. Trying to find balance and expand the range.

@elsa Grace Unsure if you refer to Marek's work - but it's actually highly impressionistic (: I wouldn't say he is a photograph copier at all. He interprets things as he sees them (I saw him working live and it was quite a spectacle to watch).

@@LironYan Thanks for replying to my reply. It's just that I have a Tzfat phobia. Anyway, nothing is better than here. Be well.

Hi Liron, how are you? I know this comment is 2 years too late, but I'm hoping you can give me some feedback. I'm currently working on a painting and I'd decided on a colour palette of soft mint green and indigo - both cool colours. But something seems missing. I'm wondering if it's possible to create a successful painting using only cool or only warm colours. What would you advise? I tried introducing alizarin but still feel like I'm not nailing it. Can't quite put my finger on it 😞

Great question! 😊🙏🏼 Actually, it should definitely be possible - there are no limits in my opinion! The painting will simply have a very particular feel to it, depending on the colors you choose. The Alizarin may be too strong a contrast to the green and indigo - I would instead try an orange and see how that works (it's a nice complementary to blues and greens). But it can be done, I've painting very extreme combos of green and red and it can work. Let me know how it goes! And feel free to email me at Liron@Lironyan.com if you want me to look at the painting (:

Covering the white highlights destroys the whole painting. This is a huge mistake. Stop doing it.😡😡😡
