In this article, I show How to Use Vintage Lenses on Canon EOS R Mirrorless Cameras. Specifically, I explain how I use Olympus OM-System Zuiko vintages lenses and Praktica PB mount lenses with the EOS R and R6 cameras. I also demonstrate a simple hack to enable you to focus on distant subjects when the type of lens adapter doesn't allow you to focus to infinity.

Great information. I don't have a mirrorless camera. Good to know about these lens adapters. Many years ago, when I was way too tired and not thinking, I tried putting the wrong lens on the wrong camera body. Let's just say I ended up with a Canon camera body that had a broken shutter mirror (whatever it's called) that fell out of the camera. That was my newbie lesson about lenses, camera bodies, and adapters. Expensive lesson!

Canon EOS R100 - The "Release shutter w/o lens" setting is found in the yellow wrench setting section, under Custom Functions(C.Fn) page 4. You set it to enable :)

BIG help, I was recently given a bunch of m42 lenses and couldn't figure it out myself as to why my Canon shutter wasn't shooting at all. Although I've worked with many manual lenses with 35mm photography, MF Peaking is a godsend with these lenses!

I'm glad it helped. Yes, focus peaking is a really good tool. I was in my garden today trying out a Helios 44M lens on my EOS R6 and the results are great. Hopefully, I'll be uploading a video in a few weeks with sample video footage.

My vintage lens can only be focused in short range and I can’t take landscapes. Is this my adapter’s Fault ?

  • @DIYVideoStudio

@kianasultan Possibly. It's usually much easier to adapt vintage lenses on to mirrorless cameras than DSLRs, but you need an adapter that gives the correct flange distance. The adapters that usually cause problems are the thin metal rings that just convert the lens to your camera's lens mount. That is the type I have for my 50mm Praktica lens and the flange distance is a little off, resulting in an inability to focus to infinity.

My grandson's just received a Canon EOS R100 Mirrorless having purchased and fitted an adapter for my vintage Olympus OM Lens. But the shutter won't operate a no entry type icon comes up on the top part of the screen, having gone through the menu we can't find 'Release Shutter W/O Lens' anywhere in the menus. His menu is very different from the one in your KZread video, which we did find very helpful, wondering if his camera the EOS R100 is capable of using my vintage OM lenses and if so how. Have tried everything I thought in the menus ie MF Enable from Disable in all modes along with others but to no avail 🤔

I' don't have the R100, but it does have the ability to release the shutter without a lens attached. I've looked at the Canon menu website (cam.start.canon/id/C015/manual/html/UG-09_Set-up_0190.html) and you'll find it in Custom Functions (C.fn4). You'll need to first change your menu display from Guided to Standard. Then go to the Wrench menu and then go into Custom Functions (C.fn). You'll then find the option to release the shutter without a lens. Good luck.

Do you need to keep the depth of field preview button on the zuiko lens pressed if you don't want to shoot fully open?

No. I've never needed to do that when using the K&F Concept adapter. Once on the adapter and camera, the aperture blades stay at whatever setting you have on the aperture ring. However, if I'm playing around with the lens off the adapter and camera then the blades stay wide open unless you press the DOF button. On my EOS R and R6 the Zuiko lenses are easy to use.

Just ordered, the helios 44-2 58mm lense for my r8. Do you think its better to buy separate adapter from m42 to r mount or use my eos to r adapter with that thin m42 to eps on top of it? Will the focus to infinity be the same issues on both?

I would get an M42 to RF adapter. You’ll be able to focus to infinity and there are fewer connections.

Hello, can you use sony a mount lens on canon eos r ?

Hi @pablopopel8693 . You can't use a Sony A mount lens directly on your Canon EOS R, however, you can use it with the correct adapter. Urth makes an A-RF lens adapter, if you're interested, here's a link to the adapter on Amazon amzn.to/3rOIHc8 Good luck.

@@pablopopel8693 I assume that might be for wildlife photography. For birding, I got the Sigma 150-600mm Sport with Canon EF mount and adapted it onto the EOS R. It worked fine, but when I got the R6 I got the RF100-500mm. It was expensive but worth it. It might sound weird, but I also use these super telephoto lenses for landscape photography.

Is the lens for Sony a mount safe to be used on canon eos r ? Does the lens have any molds, etc. ?
