Canon EF to RF Adapters / Which One is Best for You?
Canon makes four EF to RF lens mount adapters, ranging in price from $99 to $399+. Which one should you buy? I finally acquired all three (after lengthy backorders) and gave them a try.

Very in-depth information about the EF-RF adapter. Thanks for posting, Todd.
Thank you so much for the in depth comparison. A nice, simple breakdown that was very helpful.
Your sound editing is great, every "click" sounds so smooth
I’m so glad I pulled the trigger on the adapter. I’ve got an R6 and didn’t realize how expensive RF lenses were
Old video I know... but my time to upgrade is here so.... Todd... I have to say... amazing video... I was in a middle of gear buying rush... you just convinced me to buy the cheapest one lol... for anyone reading comments before watching the video.... that man knows his stuff and he has like several good points! Watch it to the end!
What a great video! Thank you for all this information, I’m about to get an R6 and would not have thought of adapters till I got to the store!
As a sports photographer I shoot 90% of the time Manual with Auto ISO. There is not much I adjust frequently. I am a big fan of the basic adapter. I bought one each for my 3 big expensive lenses, and they just stay on 100% f the time. That seems a little overpriced, but I am not buying a new 400mm F2.8 for $13K.

Hi! I found your channel through this video. I like your video style--calm, going through everything thoroughly step-by-step. Thanks!
This was so informative! I now know what I want and how it will affect my future purchases! Thank you so much for a good video! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Excellent comparison video. Very useful. It helped me deciding which adaptor to buy. Thanks.
This was top quality my friend! So helpful!
Love your Cons points. Shows you have thoroughly understood the product you are reviewing. Next EF-EOS R adapter to review would be Mieke Variable filter adapter, which for the price of a regular Canon adaptor gives you so much more...
As handy as it may be to have a polarizer in place with any lens, I usually have one on the lens as a protective measure, which came in handy once when I dropped the camera.
Thanks for the great review! This was very helpful!
Greetings from the (UK). Just come across your channel as looking at these RF adaptors. What a very informative video. Cheers. Subscribed. 👍
I currently use the 7DII, with the two-dial controls, with the ISO controlled with a separate button to activate, so I don't know that I'd need the control ring. However, looking at the placement, I can see that being potentially useful, especially if you can reach/move it with a finger on the right hand wrapped around the grip. In my head, I can see that being a quick way to flip the shutter speed (my main starting point of adjustment when needed in the moment).
I really liked the control ring on my old Pentax film camera but now you make a really good point about it being so close to the body.
Thanks man, I almost clicked the filtered version, after your input, I opted out.
Thank you, Todd! Great and clear explaination. I subscribed :)
Just the get basic one will do. I have been using the basic adapter since day one, all good and works perfectly.
Very helpful review man, thank you so much for all the information!
This was SO helpful- thank you!
Thank you for explaining this so well!

Very right buy first the adapter. And yes about the filter adapter: you are very right: hidden costs!
Excellent review and advice, thanks!
This was so so helpful. thank you so much!!
One filter version positive missed is that for some bulbous low focal length objectives, this can actually be a cheaper option - going to EF lenses like some 15mm, 11mm, 8mm or even lower, it can be very hard to impossible to get a filter, and those that you can get are often more expensive than this adapter.

That was so helpful!! Thank you so much!
I sure do thank you for this information! Just what I needed!
So good with the explanation! Thank you!
I'm at that stage of trading in some gear (EOS bodies and lenses(?) ) to go for a mirrorless Canon...probably R6 as the R5 is expensive and I'm not sure whether the £1500 price differential is justified. So, having found your video about EF to RF adapters is very timely and useful. So thank you.
Interesting the "new" control ring. For some of us remebering settimg everything on the lens with separate rings: shutter speed, aperture, white balance is basicaly like "back to the future" Thank you for the great review
Brilliant! Thanks for doing this!
Thanks for this great overview! I just started considering upgrading my old 6D to the R5 given the deals currently on and since I have 2 EF-L lenses, definitely will need 1 of these adapters. I was originally thinking of going the drop-in route, but you covered a couple of important cons I wasnt considering... especially the extra ridiculous cost of the glass insert! Furthermore, this spurred me to realize that I already have the polarizing & ND filters I need for my EF-L lenses, so this would literally be a huge waste of money in my situation since as you mentioned, you can't use the drop-in adapter with the new RF lenses (I'm also leaning towards getting the 70-200 f4 in your video). So bottom line, I will probably get the control ring version since it's available for $150 on sale now... probably would have went with the basic one if not for the sale but $50 seems much more easy to swallow than double @ $100 more. ;-)
Great video. I'm looking at finally diving into the world of Canon mirrorless cameras (an upgrade from my 10-year old Canon Rebel). The basic adaptor seems to make the most sense for me. Excited about upgrading and learning all that the latest Canon cameras/lenses can do!

I was in the same boat, I went from 500D to R10, so far the camera is good, planning to get the adapter for my older lenses.
Except content that it was really helpful, that cinematic look makes me excited 👌🏻💎
Lets not forget that the drop in filters add a barrier between your lens and the sensor to protect it from dust.
Thanks. Just what I wanted to know
Great information and review
Thank u for the review I love it I'm broke right now can't use any of my L series ef lenses on my eos rp so watching u talk more about it makes me want it more any of them lmao would work for me not so picky because I spent all saved money on mirrorless and rf 50mm 1.8 aperture lol but ur information helps alot
Great video. It shouldn't be a surprise that Canon wouldn't include the clear filter though; that just seems like a very Canon thing to do.
I love to use modified inserts with astrofilters. Waited for a long time, even after i decided to get these EF RF adapter with PL filter i had to wait for my order about 3 months.
The drop in filter would be very useful for my wide lenses that can't accept screw on filters due to bulbous front element.
Very helpful, thank you!
I wonder how smart of an idea it is to use a rear mounted polarizer n the optical path, as we’re potentially introducing additional reflections into the mix.
I use FD manual lenses occasionally and love the control ring idea on RF system.

@@bourbon_sketcher I've got a cheap FD to RF adapter, works without a problem. I use the regular EF to RF adapter for my EF lenses. Thanks
That drop in filter ring sounded so good until you listed the drawbacks. The extra money for the clear filter was bad but Not compatible with RF lenses was a deal breaker. Thanks for the great review. I'll be going with the basic model.

Well shouldn't ne obvious that it is not compatible with RF lenses. You do not need an adapter with them.
Thx so much for this nice video!
canon actually did a good homework with this adapters, imo.
This gentleman has an underrated channel
Hey Todd, I watched your video recently on your excellent Ruby Coast trip in WA, and loved your use of the Black Pro Mist filter on a certain picture. Do you have any plans to do a video regarding diffusion filters for landscape photography? That would be KILLER!
I have had all three adapters since my EOS-R; I now use them on my R5/R6. I find the control ring useless; I misuse it so often hitting the wrong setting(s) by accident I stopped using it on my adapters AND my 4 RF lenses. Maybe one day ... BUT I do like the drop-in model a lot for my 9 EF L lenses: I get a CPL and ND without messing with the front of the lens! Yea! Also, I started to sell my Lauwa EF Probe lens to get an RF version UNTIL it occurred to me that the EF version of the probe lens was better for my use because of the EF/RF drop-in adapter on my R5/R6; so, no RF probe lens needed.
Hello Todd Thanks for the awesome videos, One of my favorite lenses is my Sigma art 18-50 Ft1.8. I was wondering what adapter you use to get it to work on the R5 my Ommlite adapter doesnt let me control FT + AF Thanks :)
I’m honestly really happy with using EF L glass on my Canon mirrorless body. I won’t be buying any RF L glass anytime soon, due to ridiculously higher prices. 😊

Perhaps if I wanted an R5, I would march into my camera store and order the R5+adaptor, to be delivered together. My EF mount lenses range from TS-E 17 to Tamron 150-600.
hi great video really useful to help decide. Can I ask is the clear drop in filter a UV filter? I dont like the idea of putting more glass infront of the lens esp as it may be inferior and affect the quality further?
thank you for this video.
Good day! I use an adapter with a ring, assigned a temperature change in Kelvin to this ring. I often shoot reports and there are very difficult conditions, when in one room there is a diode light, in another there are classic light bulbs. And customers are asked to quickly give JPG files for posting on social networks. Therefore, this ring is very convenient for me!
Awesome explanation! I’ve been stuck for a while on whether I should save up and invest in RF glass or get an adapter and buy cheaper EF glass and honestly think I’d prefer spending the extra money not to have to worry about having an adapter with me at all times

I know what you mean. I just returned from a trip where I was constantly switching between two EF lenses and one RF lens and the whole adapter/no-adapter thing got pretty old. In some ways having all EF lenses would have been easier.

With only EF lenses, my adaptor stays on the body ALL of the time, and I can use a polarising filter with every lens - even when their lens hoods are on!
Thanks for sharing. So the control adapter only give additional control ring as additional "button" or it gives more compatibility with Canon R camera system like AF etc.?
Solid review! I use the ND adaptor on my R & R5 all the time, very useful when filming. (it even kind of hold me off from purchasing RF glass) Instead of buying the clear filter I just bought another basic adaptor for about the same price as a clear filter, so no messing around with the ND filter. Got me thinking though...do you need a clear filter when the ND is out? Would be useful to just have the outside part of the filter holder, it clicks right in.
@ForeverYoung007
2 жыл бұрын
I agree, what they should have done is included a blank dummy insert that contains no filter but seals the adapter: My assumption is that they include a `clear` filter to justify charging $129 for a plastic product that probably costs < 7$ to manufacture
Satisfying problem solved ✌️❤️
An aspect you didn’t mention is many photographers prefer keeping a filter like a skylight on the front of their lenses to protect them. The protection value is gone with this new concept. What about the value of my collection of different size and different use quality filters (skylight, polarizer, ND’s, vignette) designed to fit in front of the lens? Besides the overcharging, it seems like Canon blew the entire concept of this top end adapter design change. I went with the cheapest adapter which is consistent with my wanting to continue using my expensive and numerous EF “L” lenses rather than shelling out serious cash for these RF lenses. I like my R6 a lot but won’t be replacing my lenses until the new RF lenses come down very significantly in price …and even then, it will probably be on an ‘as needed’ basis since by that time the EF’s will have little value remaining. Between the 50mm f1.2, the 16-35mm f2.8, the 35-70 zoom and the 70-300 zoom and the 600mm (all Canon L) I have a lot tied up in lenses.
Nice video. How well do these adapters work with non-Canon lenses? Most of are full frame EF lenses from Tamron. But I also do have few Zeiss and Sigma lenses, and maybe few other esoteric ones (like Samyang, Rokinon, Lens Baby). (some do not have any electronics, some do have iris, some do auto-focus, image stabilization, etc). I think I only have one or two canon lenses (fixed focal length, one of the the pancake lens). Wish I could use them for example on R5 C. Thanks.
thinking about imelapses day time and the nd mounted looks like the best
I have a viltrox with the control ring. I personally like having the ring closer to the body. With this I can control my entire exposure triangle on the fly with one hand never leaving the viewfinder

Hi Todd, thanks for all the explaination to this adaptors. Was their any specific reason for Canon to change the connection to a new system ? I am changing to the Canon R10. I have about 6 EF-S lenses which i will not get rid of, because their are all in good shape.
I almost grabbed the CPL filter adapter from an auction house, I sort of have plans to jump into the RP from my M50 (mainly for the stills capabilities) for $250 Canadian. Would have been so worth it.
Great video thanks!
Filter adapter sounds really useful except for when I go to put my rf lens on instead of ef
Thanks! Which adapter to use for the Canon R6 Mark ii with a Sigma Art lens?
great video vro
Brilliant, thank you.
The adapter with the control ring did not adjust my apeture on my 70-200 L lens in manual mode. I must me apeture mode in order to make adjustments.
I am glad you pointed out the lack of a clear filter. That's is a big miss for Canon. I think they should at least sell a cover for a much lower price.
@esoxhu
Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Why do we need any extra filter (clear filter) if we don't need any filter. Only a cover should be attached.
I got the $50 ebay special. Works great. No bells and whistles, just lets me use my EF lenses on my R8
I think the control ring is amazing on the R. But ever since I got the R5, I have never used the control ring adapter, not even once, maybe I just haven't gotten creative enough. So I usually just tell people with R to get the adapter with control ring.
Does the control ring allow to adjust apeture? Would this adapters work with Sigma/Tokina glass for APS-C on R7?
I purchased the basic $99 Canon brand adapter and the $149 Meike VND adapter which I use for stills and video, respectively on my new R6mkII. I think the combination of the VND adapter + EF lens is actually more convenient for controlling video exposure than an RF lens with VND on the end of it.

It is a pocket adapter. After you have only RF-lenses, what to do with this adapter? Your only possibility is to put it into your pocket. - I want to keep my trusty EF 50mm/1.2 lens as long as possible. It is now free, it looks good (the best looking Canon lens), it is sharp enough, it is small by size and I love it.
Thank you!
Can I adjust the exposure compensation with the control ring that comes with one of the models of the EF- RF adapter ?
Hi 🙂 Thx for vid! Question,,, these adapters do not alter the focal length,,, yes? Thx :-)
It does not add to the base focal length for EF glass, does it? Since technically it is further away from the sensor with the adapter on. I am new to photography and just got an R6 with the base adapter. I have an EF 70-200 and was wondering what the effect might be.
Thank you! Thank you!
Do any of these adapters crop the image? I'm asking because I want to use an EF fisheye lens on an RF body and I can't have any cropping.
Nuts. The adapter with the filter should include a blank insert at no charge.
I just got the one with the control ring! Question- when you put the adaptor on the camera, is it supposed to be super stiff to turn into place? I find that using mine on my r6 Mkii, it feels so hard to turn compared to using an old ef lens on an ef body…
Does the clear filter have any use really? Aside from filling that gap left, I mean... Maybe it protects the camera sensor from any dust the lenses could carry?
Will the kolari filters work in the canon adapter or do you have to buy the kolari adapter?
Sorry if this seems a silly question but is by using a adapter between the lens and the sencer not the same as using a extension tube,,, all be it changing the ring size?if this is the case I dont see any where what the equivalent tube rating will be? ...sorry if its a silly question.
What adapter do I need to fit a RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM. On a EOS rebel t7.
Is it possible to change filters with the PromediaGear L bracket installed?
Hello, I recently got a 25mm f1.4 cctv lens which came with a c mount for canon m, m2, m3, so which adapter should I get instead for 25mm to Canon 60D
So, if your shooting in manual mode 100% of the time without a bracket is it a good buy until you upgrade to all RF glass?🤔
So how long was the wait? From the time u ordered... To the time received your adapters?
