*Inspector Calls Quotes + Power and Conflict Quotes + Basic info* *Inspector Calls:* "A man has to make his own way- has to look after himself and his family" - Mr Birling. This quotes establishes Mr Birlings beliefs and opinions, showing him to be a capitalist and someone who only cares about himself- then his family, but none else. This tells us, the audience that Mr Birling is a binary opposite to the Inspector (who acts as Priestley's mouthpiece) who promotes the idea that we have responsibility to look after each other. He says "We are members of one body", "Public men, mr Birling have responsibilities as well as privileges". "You not only knew her, but you knew her well"- Sheila. This is interesting, as we the audience realise the similarities between Eric and Gerald, they both go to the palace bar in order to exploit women, but while Eric, who is completely unflattering and lazy, is frowed upon, while Gerald, a charismatic, upper class man, manages to come across as respectable. While Eric says "A state where a chap turns nasty", Gerald is respectable. However, due to his class he avoids responsibility, Priestley is criticising how the upper classes are able to get away with manipulating and using the lower classes due to their power and authority. "Unsinkable, absolutely Unsinkable"- Mr Birling. Dramatic irony, a post war audience will be aware of the titanic and what happened. The titanic acts as a metaphor for capitalism, and how everyone sees it as being "Unsinkable", but it inevitability fails. Mr Birling stating his pride and absolute belief that the titanic will not sink, is him reinforcing his belief in capitalism, and how he believes it will sail, and will be successful, despite that not being true. "I did nothing I'm ashamed of"- Mrs Birling. Mrs Birling is reinforcing her belief that she, an upper class women, was not in the wrong when rejecting a suffering, lower class women who carried her grandchild. It's made clear that Mrs Birling is not working at the charity in order to help people, but for the status it brings, it makes her SEEM respectable. She only feels slightly sorry when she learns it was her grandchild who died... "We don't live alone, we are all members of one body"- The Inspector. He is pushing forward the idea of socialism, he is essentially saying that we are all responsible for each other, and that socialism is the way to go in order to improve society. This is backed up in the same speach when he says "Fire, blood and anguish" which shows us that if we dont change, we will only repeat history with WW1 and 2, and it will only lead to death and destruction. "Hard Headed man of business"- Mr Birling. Establishes his nature as a selfish, self centered businessman that Priestley aims to criticise. "Nobody wants war"-Mr Birling. More dramatic irony, it shows his lack of social understanding and how he doesn't truly understand what is going on. Mr Birling doesn't care enough, as he is too stubborn and arrogant to consider the possibility that his belief in capitalism will fail. "Girls of that class"- Mrs Birling, shows her disregard for the lower classes, believing herself to be above them. She shows us how she doesn't really care about the lower classes, which is evident with the derogatory language. She also assumes that all the working class care about is money, which while it is something they need, she is surprised that the working classes would refuse money. She also shows a lack of social understanding here. "Why shouldn't they try for higher wages"- (I'm not 100% but I'm 99% sure that this is Sheila), criticism of Mr Birling, she criticises the mistreatment of the working classes, and realises the injustice behind the underpayment of the working class. Sheila begins to see the truth behind capitalism and when the inspector leaves, she becomes the new voice of priestly and the working class. *Poems (Brief overview + a few quotes -unexplained-)* Checkin out me history- Dramatic monologue, where the speaker blames the government for only teaching their own culture. He feels as though his identity is being covered up by the British Government. Quotes: "Blind me to my own identity" "Dem tell me bout 1066 and all dat" "Dem never tell me bout nanny de maroon" The Prelude- A poem about the speaker reminiscing about the time he stole a boat, only to be overwhelmed by the power of nature. Explores the idea that power is both beautiful and dangerous. Quotes- "Troubled Pleasure" "Dipped my oars into the silent lake" "Upreared it's head" London- A poem about the speaker commenting on life in London while wandering through the streets, as he talks about the injustice that occurs. Quotes- "Charted Thames" "In every cry of every man" "Mind forged manacles" "Blood rums down palace walls" Tissue- Poem about paper and how it is both fragile and useful. Paper acts as a metaphor for power and how humans have the wrong attitude about life (note: arguably the worst poem, wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have to) Quotes: "See how easily they fall away on a sign" "Maps too" "Fine slips from Grocery shops" The emigree- Dramatic monologue about the speakers old country and how she had to leave it due to conflict, but she will still love her country. Quotes- "It may be sick with tyrants, but i am branded with an impression of sunlight" "I can't get it off my tongue, it tastes of sunlight" "They mutter death, and my shadow falls as evidence of sunlight" My last duchess- Dramatic monologue about a dukes last duchess. Explores the idea of human power and corruption. Quotes- "That's my laat duchess painted there on the wall" "None puts back the curtain i have drawn for you but i" "Notice Neptune, though" Charge of the light brigade- Describes the light bridage who were given the wrong order to charge. Shows how they are noble and should be respected while criticising the government for the mistake. Quotes- "Half a league, half a league" "Into the vally of death" "When can their glory fade" "Honour the light brigade, noble six hundred!" Kamikaze- Narrative poem about a kamikaze pilot who turns back on his mission, and how due to propaganda, he is shunned for doing so. Quotes- "Shaven head, full of powerful incantations" "Black crabs, feathery prawns" "Which had been the better way to die" "We too learned, to be silent" War Photographer- Third person poem about a war Photographer placing pictures in a dark room. Explores the idea that war causes pain to average civilians. Quotes- "Spools of suffering set out in ordered rows" "Children running in nightmare heat" "They do not care" Exposure- Poem that describes the harsh conditions of war and the effect it can have. Quotes- "Merciless East winds that knive us" "Twisting Agonies of men among it's brambles" "Nothing happens" (Anaphora) Ozymandias- Poem describing a crumbled statue in the middle of nowhere of Ozymandias and how it's been consumed by nature. (Natures power > human power) Quotes- "Sneer of cold command" "Nothing beside remains" "Sands stretch far away" Poppies- Poem about a mother who is missing her son who has gone to war (and has presumably died) and how she feels a sense of loss and grief. Quotes- "Poppies had already been placed" "Binding around your blazer" "Intoxicated" Remains- About a solider experiencing PTSD after killing some robbers/looters. Looks at the physiological effects of war. Quotes- "On another occasion" "I see every roud as it rips through his life" "His bloody life in my bloody hands" "The drinks and drugs won't flush it out" (Best poem fr) Bayonet charge- Poem about a solider who has a moment of realisation as he questions why he is charging in a battlefield. Suggests war is almost pointless. Criticism of the government + propaganda for misleading people. Quotes- "Suddenly, he awoke and was running" "In bewilderment he almost stopped" "King, honour, human dignity, etcetera" Storm on the island- Poem about a speaker who feels confident about rhe upcoming storm, but slowly becomes more worried about it. Metaphor for the violence in ireland. Quotes- "we are prepared, we build our houses squat" "Raise a tragic chorus in a gale" "We are bombarded by the empty air" This took a while, hope its helpful.

I dont know if this a question that you can answer, but do you know how i could write faster in the gcses as the problem with my and my mocks from before was the lack of time, i barely finish my work and a rarely have the time to finish both of the questions aswell as checking it.

I would advise allocating a specific time to each question and once that time is done, MOVE ON! doesn’t matter if ur not done with the essay, u NEED to keep enough time for each question which means if you continue, ur taking time off that u could be using the rhe second question. Also overall to increase speed u may not like to hear this but rly the only way I know of is to practice writing full answers in the time given in exam conditions at home. It helps a lot!
