So many people still get lost finding Google Contacts in Gmail, It has moved from the left side of the screen to the app menu (the 9 dots on the right side). Frankly, I still don't understand why Google thought that was a good idea.

Wonder why they don't put a shortcut to Contacts in the right hand side bar like they have done with Calendar, Keep and Tasks? This function is available in Gmail, Sheets, Docs, and Slides. Would make life so much easier to have access to Contacts there.

@dottotech Great Video, as usual. Re Google moving things around, I think they hired some microshaft people. Another one was when they moved creating a new filter from the top of "Filters and Blocked Addresses" to the bottom. Why not both? Why not a keyboard shortcut that only works therein to be able to do so from anywhere on that page? Another rant is that the latest iteration of gMail has it going to sleep when you click on another tab. This forces you to wait while it reloads even if you come right back. If you have any insight around these problems, please share it, and keep up the good work as you're one of the better 'explainers' I have the pleasure of watching. Wo0dy

When I check Google Contact in the Android settings as my contact list in the phone, does this replace all contacts in the phone, or does the Google contact list merge with whats on the phone already, and vice versa, do the unique contacts in the phone also merger with the Google contacts in my computer?

Love your videos! I'm still kind of new to Google apps, but learning a lot. While I love having the master database of contacts and consolidated information, I do not like having every entry appear in my Galaxy phone's contact list. Especially the ones I don't have phone numbers for. So I created a new label in Google Contacts entitled 'My Phone' and added the label to each contact I wanted to appear on my phone. Then on my phone, Contacts>Settings>Contacts to show, I selected Custom List>Google>My Phone. Now I don't have to scroll through everyone in the entire master database when using my phone's Contacts app. This works well for me, giving me a much more streamlined Contacts list on my phone. Thanks for all the info you share!

Hello, about every two weeks, I get a new list of clients which normally totals around 20-30 clients. In the old contacts, I could just copy the whole list right into contacts to a new label. It seems as if this new contacts does not allow this, and I have to move them one at a time. Any suggestions?

A few observations. The separate Contacts "site" is not new; it's been there for a number of years. In fact that is how I have managed my contacts for as long as I can remember. I don't think I was ever aware that there was a way to manage them inside Gmail. The shortcut g c (go contacts) is only available if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled in Gmail settings. There are several other g (go) shortcuts, as well as many others. The magic shortcut is ?; type that from the inbox and up pops a nice helper that gives you all the available keyboard shortcuts. Be careful when using the labels (i.e. groups) in Contacts; when you address an email to a group and any contact in it has more than one email address defined, it's a bit random as to which one will be added to the recipient list. Contacts has no way to tag one address as the default and appears to take the top (i.e. first entered) one when addressing via a group but sometimes that seems not to happen. It is also not possible to reorder addresses in a contact; you must delete all addresses and re-add them with the one you want to be used added first. There is currently no way to have a contact in two groups with one address used by one group and another address used by the other group.

No wonder the "gc" thing did not work for me like in the video above. I kept typing "gc" in the inbox area and nothing happened. Then I found your post and typed the "?" and up comes a large shortcut menu with the capability of activating all the shortcuts. The video did not mention this....you did.....thank you!

Thanks, Steve. I have often wondered about Google contacts. Especially after buying iPhone and Samsung units over the years (not at the same ). This really helps. I've often wondered why some email addresses "auto fill" when I write new emails and others do not. We have a new employee who contact was not automatically filling in. When I added him to Google Contacts the problem was solved.

You’re videos are so helpful! I’m moving abroad and want everyone’s addresses for Christmas cards etc. and this video showed me exactly how to store them in one place. Thank you!

Thanks, another informative video. I’ve used Google Contacts for years now and on my iPhones have always used an app called Contacts Sync For Google by Playa apps which syncs Contact Groups too. It’s a great app with good support too.

Great video. Or use Google contacts all the time for both work and personal. I have found that using the application FullContact helps me to sync all of my contacts in one place and also allows me to scan business cards and sync them into all my data bases.

I would still like to have my info at the top of the list, also I can't find my data even though I've created a contact with my name. Suggestions? I enjoyed your video and found it helpful - I'm and Apple parson with iPhones and MAC but I like to use the google apps.

Is it possible to sync google contacts properly with a MacBook Address Book? The last time I tried it, it was a mess. On my MacBook I still use Thunderbird because it's more convenient as Gmail online in the browser, so a neatly synced address book would be nice...

I am having a problem where the contacts I entered in Google recently are not syncing to my CRM which is TOPPRODUCER X which recently updated from topproducer 8i. prior to this upgrade, and for 16 years my contacts have synced both ways. I worked with tech support on the Topproducer side to make certain that set up on the Topproducer (TP) side is correct and works. Contacts entered in TP sync to Google. The problem: When entered in Google contacts, they do not sync to TP. I heard you say that some things have changed in Google. Since I havent yet received help from Google Support, I wondered if you or any of your users can offer help.

Hi Steve, thanks for the info. How can I merge my contacts that are linked to different accounts. I realized that I have some contacts in outlook that are on a Microsoft exchange account and some that are on my Samsung phone. On my phone they show if they are a ms exchange contact or phone contact but it won't let me change the account. I would like to pull all my contacts, business and personal to one place on my computer to be able to manage them better. That way I can utilize sorting and grouping functions better. I would also like to be able to link them to onenote to be able to store information as needed. Thanks!

Another nice video There is a way to stop the auto complete of some email addresses. Go to settings , "Create Contacts for Auto-Complete" option If you want to add businesses to your contacts, then add new contact and just type the phone number in a phone number field, and then save, Google will then add address and other fields without you having to do this (for most businesses) Address in Contacts of course links nicely to Google Maps Adding birthdays and anniversaries in Contacts also allows you to have those show up in your Google Calendar

Hi Steve I wonder if you have a solution to a problem with the new Gmail contacts? In the past it was possible to create a group and then there was a drop-down menu where you could add email addresses and you were able to put multiple contacts into the group. However I can't find a way of doing this with the new set up. It seems as though you have to go to each individual contact and then change that record by ticking the box for the relevant group. Please tell me there is an easier way to do this? Blessings Roger

i had a quick question about google contacts, transferring to a LG android...i have my google account, and successfully transferred/synced all of my google contacts to my new phone..one silly issue i can not figure out...at the 4:00 mark on your video, the 2 contacts you have there , the "d" and "e" are followed by the same letters circled in colors...in my old phone,android , 3 years old, all the contacts had these random colored circles for all contacts, that's what i wanted.......i can not get that to happen on my new phone, they are all the same white color...what am i missing...thanks for the help ....

Hi Steve, Thanks for your videos. I have an issue with Google Contacts. I have 3 Gmail accounts and 3 google contact lists. I am sure I was able to do it before, but it won't work now. Real bummer. When I use my Samsung A22 phone and I am in this Gmail account I'd like to get the Label from google contact, but when I type the label in, it's not there. I presume my phone account is looking at my default account. Is there any way when you do an email it looks at all your google accounts contacts and retrieves the correct label? I have a Pocophone F1 and have been going crazy trying to eliminate anything that runs on MIUI which is the manufacturer's skin over Android. In MIUI nothing syncs except to its own cloud which means as you say that photos, contacts, etc are not available on other devices. Worse yet, I just could not figureout how to make and answer calls... on a phone. I installed Simple Dialer app but now i'm unsure about texting. I have Facebook Messenger but have gotten reports of texts going out hours or days later. I have no idea if texts are being received by people who don't use FM. Does Google Contacts work with Simple Dialer or have its own dialer? I need phone contacts and universal texting ability on... my PHONE. It's a phone, and for all it does the greatest challenge is calls andtexts! Also please pardon any words which run together without spaces. The space bar on my Pixelbook has a low success rate. So for $400 I have a phone that doesn't call or text and for $1000 I have a keyboard which doesn't type. Could be worse. I havea Windows Surface which doesn't seem to be able to do anything, doesn't sync with Google, and collapses under its own weight when propped on its own easel leg...which also is rough metal and scratches every, um, surface I placed it on before taping it up. Imagine howclassy that ragged taped-up edge looks as you watch the thing slither down and fall flat cuz it's too heavy to stay upright.

Dear Steve, Thank you. However, I did not find a discussion of the MAIN CONTACT list and then that pesky OTHER CONTACTS FILE - way low on the menu list. Google allows each email to be put in a holding pattern if you let them / then you are to CLICK the ICON to create the contact. If you do not update this regularly / TONS of contacts with “just email addresses” are SITTING THERE - And to create a contact for the over 1000 sitting in that file you have to click them manually. EACH ONE / well up to about 50 or so / there is NO BUTTON / CLICK ALL AND CREATE CONTACT FOR ALL. I have just discovered a complete CRM nightmare. Any thoughts? Updates? Ideas? Thank you.

Thanks for the help with Google Contacts. But the hack you mention (around 6:51 min into your video) about just typing "G" and "C" (ou "GC") while in my GMail Inbox, to Open my Google Contacts, does NOT work for me. I am running Chrome Browser on a ThinkPad T430 , in Windows10 (64bit) --if that has anything to do with it.

Do the groups you create in contacts work with the Android messages app? If so, how?

Perhaps you can help me. since feb 12 the old google contacts is no more. I use to be able to just go in and export "all" contacts via a CSV file. Now this "all" contact feature is gone. I now can only chose, contact x-number,stared x-number, frequently x-number, or individual groups that show x-number of contact. NONE of these are my complete contact list. I feel I must be missing something in this new 2019 version. but i have searched high and low on the next and nothing. if you can point me in the right direction that would awesome. Will to even hire some on to get me back to a complete exported contact list

Can you take a whole group aka label and put them under another label? For instance a specific group of contacts from 2016, I want to save them under Past registrations but keep them separated by year. is that possible? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!

I wanted to hear info about how to change the (Google default) name (nikname) that is appearing on the gmail next to color circle with the first letter. I was changing the name in the Google contacts to a completely different name, but Google does not change the nickname next to the color circle with the first name letter. So for example I have contact Lukas of the company "Status". And Google gives him nickname Lukas. Lukas leave the company and Jane comes to replace him. I change the contact detales from Lukas to Jane, but Google still shoes me Lukas in my new email conversations with Jane. How to change Google default nicknames?

I'd love to learn about a mail merge. I use a contacts Christmas label but have to manually sync with the program to print onto card envelopes. Hoping for automatic. Any suggestions?

Thank you for the very informative tutorial. I am finding that if a contact has more than one email address Google Contacts seems to randomly choose the one that appears in the contacts list. I found that in creating a group in a label, I had to be very careful to make sure that the email address for that contact was the one that was needed for that label. So, I ended up adding new contacts for that same person with their other email address and that worked. Is there a better way?

Not sure, you should be able to make one address the primary for the contact.

Steve, Always my go to for the best updates on managing my data.. Question. I sync my contacts between IOS and my google contacts....and I always seem to get a sub categorry of "my Contacts" underneath my Contacts.....in my gmail contacts. Any idea why....I can never remember...and it gets disconnected sometimes and I often cannot see all my contacts...

You’re right-contacts should be easier. I used to use Google Contacts but then moved to iCloud, and I wish I could remember why (I’m sure it made sense at the time). And even though I am not considering a switch back any time soon, I still found this video interesting and useful. Thank you!

Thank you for the informative video. I do have a question that I was hoping SOMEONE can help me with. I run a child care facility. I have created different labels for each of my classrooms. In the classroom is the child's parents info. I used to be able to click a box to add both emails to the childs account, so when sending a group message to the entire class, both parents would receive the email. Now, that box is not there anymore and even though both parents email addresses are under the child's info, only one parent is receiving the email. There is no box to check anymore. How do I fix this? How do I go about including both parents in emails? Your help is much appreciated

I am very happy with using Google contacts as my master contacts, but goal is to import all my Google contacts into Outlook also. Appears that Outlook needs vCard format to import. Have tried multiple approaches but can't get more than 1 contact included in the vCard file, even with Google Takeout. Any suggestions?

I would be like to know if you know one function of android phones, when you search one contact, it's brings to you phones number of the web database, something like a normal serch in google. it calls reverse lookup, thereby lost the sense to store contacts of some companys or places, because when you shearch, it brings everything. Do you know what i talking about?

quick question for you, I do not see print very well so I depend on pictures and how do I get to pictures on my google contact list from the internet. or even my google photo

Does google contact provide any option to remove the few fields, as most of them are not required (like address etc). There are so many irrelevant fields which one has to ignore before identifying the relevant fields. Please suggest if there is any solution ?

If possible I'd love to hear about other options for managing different contacts from different email accounts. Unfortunately I have contacts in Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook. In Google Contacts I can create a Label (Group). I would like to include both the persons work and personal email addresses. Is there a way to do this without creating a separate contact and adding that to the Google Contact Label?

I discovered today that placing calls on Contacts, they no longer go through my home phone - the actual land line, one of those old wireless things, as it did until yesterday. Now the call uses the mic in my cam and it seems I sound far away... how do I get Contacts to put the call through my phone as it did before? I'm finding that I have to put both the first name and last name in the first name field. So, I'm going back to use only Google contacts as the primary source. Google calendar never fails to sync across devices, so I'm sure Google contact will be fine. Steve...regarding 'Linking" can you do a video on "POST" 'sync' between iPhone & Google Contacts? After setting up using exclusively Google apps & Contacts (mostly after seeing your videos) my iPhone and Gmail were synced. Great. But now, when I add a new contact on either my phone or gmail on the PC...they DO NOT sync because they're not LINKED. The only way I can link them is to export from Google Contact and import the card to iCloud. Then it works. I looked into an app called, "Contact Sync for Google Gmail" which has great reviews, but I'm hesitant to allow a 3rd party to control my contacts. Thoughts? Help? Got any Kryptonite hanging around to help? Thanks....Gary
