Use Cold Water When You Shave

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When it comes to shaving, it can be second nature to crank the heat on the tap and get the water flowing extra hot. But, thanks to a viewer's comment, I think my eyes have been opened to the joys of cold water shaving...and maybe you should give it a try too!

In terms of water, I never let the tap run, nor do I fill up the sink to rinse my razor. I splash water on my face and add a pre-shave. I bowl lather so I measure out distilled water for that. I rinse my razor out if it gets clogged but use way less water than if I had filled the sink. Treat water as a precious commodity which it surely is.

I’m in Canada where we spend most of the time trying to keep warm so cold water shaving is not my cup of tea. In the military we were taught how to shave using very little water when deployed to arid environments but since I live in a rainforest it’s unnecessary to conserve water, especially when shaving. Hey Greg, keep on shaving on. I’m a cold water shaver (ice cubes in a bowl), but I use hot water to wet the face and rinse the razor between passes. I rest/dunk the razor in the cold water before it touches my face. I used to shave in the shower, and for that I felt guilty about the time spent and water wasted. So, I switched back to shaving at the sink. But I also fill up my 20oz scuttle (inner chamber) and the top bowl with water everyday and microwave it to get it nice and hot. I’m not about to stop doing that.

I love the cold water concept and it works great on reducing irritation. I but, I also have to disclose that I fill the sink at least half full twice. Once to shave and once to force the hair out of the trap to prevent clogs. Being in Florida, I also water my yard twice/week. I do delay that until at least an hour after my shave to allow the municipal water supply to recover. So Greg, I can only imagine how much water you have wasted in all of your outstanding and informative videos! Let’s just call it good as you served mankind!

It's called "Wet" shaving for a reason, we use water to shave! I have tried cold water shaving a few times in the summer which was OK, but not so good in the winter. As I shave only once ever two days I think the savings would be quite minimal compared to the amount of hot water we used to shower or wash dishes or in the washing machines or gas used in keeping warm in winter.🤟🤔👊

Very interesting. I have never cold water shaved. I've always used the hot towel routine before beginning the shave. I have to admit, I get, on the occasion, bumps on the skin. They say that the bumps are the result of hairs growing back in. If that is true, then thinking about it, it would stand to reason that you want your pores closed and not open which would allow hair to grow back in. I'll have to give this technique a try. Thank very much.

For sure! Warm water is good too. I did some more reading on it. Hot water extracts sebum oil which can cause acne. Cool water locks in the good oils but can’t wash off the bad ones. So warm water with a cold water rinse might be the one two punch for me

I think it comes down to where do you live. I live in the Midwest and we have an abundance of water. We haven’t been in a drought stage in my area since 1988. To be honest, the dam has been open for years so the lake doesn’t overfill. Water is cheap where I live. That being said, I try to step up when it comes to electric and natural gas. I don’t have my house freezing in the summer and don’t have my house toasty in the winter. I can wear a hoodie and sweat pants inside to do my part. If I lived in LA, I’d try to conserve knowing every once counts, but here it doesn’t. I don’t leave the faucet running, but I fill up my sink with warm water to the amount I need and use it to rinse my razor and rinse my face between passes. I don’t run the faucet again until I rinse clean.

I can’t remember ever seeing (or hearing about) a barber using cold water. Having said that, wasting water is a serious issue. Here in Australia it’s a big deal (Govt advertisements etc - little kids and college students get angry and stressed if they suspect water is being wasted). So… hot water (without wasting it); cold only if hot is unavailable for some reason. Cheers. 👍🪒

Thanks for watching! Yeah there’s definitely pampering with the hobby. The post shave feel with cold water shaves (for me) is all the pampering I need lol. Yeah I don’t want to waste it. Might try microwaving water but not sure where in the bathroom to put the microwave
