Like what? I've cut 4x12's on a miter saw to make geometric support beams on a cabin. I was thinking this was more portable to cut really small things, but I have a small 6in miter for stuff like crown and cabinet trim. I think it's just a views vid. And he got me😂

So, if you have a $400 compound miter saw, you can make a small jig allowing you to make cuts without a $400 compound miter saw. Got it. Thanks man!

A Japanese pull saw will give a finish ready cut, the miter saw? Nah. There’s a ton of ways to cut something, but each way to do it doesn’t always yield the same exact result.

@@NintenDub Yeah, you got it. It's silly, like when Coyote chases Roadrunner to the edge of a broken cliff but the Coyote falls with the earth and Roadrunner remains floating on his magic cliff.

This is a great way for someone to practice positioning if they want to use hand tools for wood working. Since it's a Japanese saw I'm willing to bet this is used for "traditional," crafts. I'm truth sometimes you can't beat the precision of experience and well crafted hand tools.

I like this idea compared to all the other ones this beats them all.

...but you don't need the magnets... In fact, you routed the hole too shallow the second time around (negating the purpose of the guide), yet fixed it offscreen.

Neat hack, you just gotta use the chop saw that already does everything your magnetic jig does to make the jig for your hand saw which has significantly less cutting power than your chop saw. I’ll stick to using power tools my friend.

Well, I’d say that asking why, is waste because when trying to help others, less experienced - to learn woodworking, little accurate jigs for hand tool use are the way to go. Nice job filming, editing and making of this point.

@@KyleRepinski it is done all the time in machining for maintaining exact distances and cutting angles especially on 100+ parts that all need to be the same. That is what a part stop is, and as others have said, this is good for outside where you might not have power and need to make a cut like that and keep it nice and even, that can be difficult to do, and to keep it at a perfect 45° cut all the way. As said above, this is a good beginner one for hand saws, say like with that Japanese pull cut saw he is using and is especially useful to help make sure you get nice straight cuts and have nice 90° edges when you are done. Its a smart idea for sure, but you should make it so the magnet and saw are just out of reach. Friction between the metals rubbing together would make heat. Heat will take away the magnetism in the metal.

You dont need to use a jig at all but we do to make life easier/consistent/save time Just like using a jig vs not using a jig, with magnets require less effort from the user

I have a handpowered miter saw. Really old. Can cut angles in 3 directions. But... I'd still use this jig. You can't always get your tools in position. You don't always need 3D angle accuracy. A simple and accurate jig is helpful.

Been using a speed square and jigsaw for cuts lately when I don’t have a need for the miter station. Been pretty surprised how well it works but this looks great too.

Why would you use a jigsaw instead of a skilsaw? The amount of tearing must be awful.

I have an old "Miller's Falls" miter box and it works perfectly - every single time...

Kinda cool, but I certainly don't use a hand saw very often!

I’ve spent way too much money and far too lazy to not use my power tools.

You know sometimes we have to do our hobby of woodworking at night because it's not our actual full time job. Well you have to think about the family members asleep or city noise ordinances so this is actually a great way to make cuts

It's true that power tools are not always an option, but the best way to make this cut is to mark 2 lines with your speed square and cut it freehand. With a little practice, it's faster than grabbing a jig and bonus, you're not limited to 45 and 90. Get good at it and you can even cut perfect compound angles.

@@coletoncallender7127 Sure, it's a common cut and pretty simple. For example, the 45 degree cut -- mark your 45 on the face of the board and your 90 on the edge. Start your cut on the corner where the lines meet, pulling the saw to get started (it's easier). Important: Do not cut the line! Cut next to the line. Trade term is keep the line or save the line. Anyway, start your cut on the corner and work your way into the longer line. As you're cutting, gradually follow the shorter line. You don't have to see (or mark) the other 2 sides of the board because a sharp saw with gentle cutting pressure will cut a straight slice. Do the same for a simple 90 degree cut or a tricky compound miter, it's just a matter marking 2 lines and cutting along them. 2x4's are cheap, so have some fun practicing. You'll have it down in no time.

Some good points and bad points about this design. I think the magnets are not really necessary- the bearing surfaces eventually wear, which is easily remedied by skiffing off a mm ( but not if a magnet is in the way). I prefer to have a longer jig so that it can be clamped and you don't have to worry about movement, especially when cutting hw. For those saying that if you have a chop saw you wouldn't need a jig like this, you are wrong. If you wanted to make a small 45° cut on a 2m dining table, how would you offer that up to a chop saw?

This is actually a pretty clutch tip i got magnet for days and that jig 2ould easily fit in my tool box

I have a small table mount jig saw I’ve used many time for small projects. Didn’t need a wood jig for cutting. Just measure twice, cut once, works every time.

I too struggled to cut anyway straight with those pull saws. Then I got a tenon and dovetail saws. Perfect cuts without jigging.

Forget all the haters. I like it. It's hard to use a draw saw. But where do you buy magnetic washers?

This only works if you start off with perfectly square stock to create your jig.

Now make it perfect without the mitre saw, and it would actually be a worthwhile video.

Using a giant miter saw and full sized drill press to make a hand saw guide is like using an arc welder to make a soldering gun. Works great looks like but if you have the tiols to make it this way ya dont really need it. Niw make it with that ryobi and ill be propeely impressed

Only problem is that’s a very specific angle.

Good idea for beginners. But I Don't have a table saw, miter saw, or band saw. Hardly ever build with dimensional lumber.

What if you have a rough cut blade on it but you need to make a finish cut? It’s going to take longer to swap blades out than to grab this jig for a quick, clean cut

I just builded a Tablet thats wide enough to cross the Bathtube on the wall side a I mounted a stainless steel strip and used the same Neodym magnets to lock the Tablet onto the bathtube.

I have a love-hate relationship with magnets. They're very useful at times. Other times such as when using magnets to store tools, the tools become magnetized themselves which leads to picking up all sorts of ferrous debris and sticking to things you don't want to get stuck to. The tools are basically ruined at that point.

So we're just going to make custom magnet jigs for all the angles instead of learning how to cut things normally. And we're going to do it using the skills we apparently lack and are inventing these jigs to compensate for. Make it make sense

Good, clean cuts are always preferable and because I often have need to make them with a hand saw, instead of the miter, I will most definitely get good use out of this.
