USCM Artillery: UA 571-C Sentry Gun Units - Explained

While scenes containing the UA 571-C Sentry Gun Units were originally deleted from Aliens, the weapons used to defend against the xenomorphs captured the interest of fans. How do these weapons work, and why were the scenes deleted from the film?

I really like the depth it gives Hudson. Most of his screen time is being a goofball(in the ship), freaking out(after the dropship's non-textbook landing) or the end shot of him going down swinging. Fans of the movie knew that there's more to Hudson than freaking out, but that scene gives you a chance to see the Hudson that belongs in that platoon: technically sound, salty dog doing his job. It's scenes like this, and it's original removal, that prove that Hollywood executives realty don't know a thing about what the audience likes. If your director is worthy, let him shoot the movie he wants. Oh, and RIP Bill Paxton. Whether as Hudson, Chet, or any number of other roles, his work made a lot of fun for a lot of people. And yes, this is by far my favorite Paxton role.

As said previously, the sentry scene was awesome and crucial for two reasons. 1) the Aliens getting eviscerated and mowed down by machine guns was so satisfying to see. Xenomorphs are lucky and always seem to have the upper hand, but its nice to know high tech weapons can still help humans fight back just as hard. 2) the draining ammo count created so much good tension and a sense of impending/increasing danger for the marine relying on these two guns to fend off wave after wave

Truly one of the best deleted scenes, in my opinion. It tells us a lot about the nature of the Aliens when encountering a significant threat to the hive. We hear and see just how many Xenomorphs rush straight into danger to eliminate a threat, but also how clever they are about decision making. Like Dr. Church's experiment with the pig and the guard, a single alien will not relinquish a chance to attack an enemy even if it's personal survival is at risk. In this situation, perhaps it was the Queen who called them out of the line of fire in order to preserve the bulk of her forces so that she could consolidate her troops and attack the enemy on her own terms. Very interesting!

I saw Aliens in the theater in 1986 with a friend who agreed to see it. Of course the sentry gun scene was not in the movie. When we returned we caught Siskel and Ebert reviewing the film on TV. Ironically, when the film was shown on TV or cable around 1989 the longer version of the film was played. That version did include the sentry guns -- the longer version of the film. Does it make it a better movie? Simply, yes. It doesn't take the film over the top but was rather a catchy addition to the sci-fi film classic when I first saw it and recognized right away it was not part of the film. However, the only real point is that it would have been better if the sentry guns were kept in the film.

The sentry gun scene adds weight to the stakes that they cast was up against in the story of ALIENS. It established that the entire hadley's hope population was already spawned from, it shows that xenos are still a threat despite advanced firearms, it also shows that the xenos can learn from losses... it also helps ripley near the end because there are fewer xenos guarding the queen due to the combined losses from the sentry gun scene and escape scenes combined.

The sheer scope of terror and joy the Turret Scene was *awesome* . The Xenomorphs are shown to be somewhat intelligent and retreat. However, though they retreat, we know that there are way more Xenomorphs alive even though the turrets ran out of ammo (or have a incredibly low amount). If they threw a half-dozen more bodies or so against the guns, all of the humans would be dead and so we see how lucky the humans were.

The very first time I watched Aliens I streamed it from a...erm...less than reputable source. I didn't know whether or not I'd like the film, so I didn't want to risk money. The version I unknowingly watched was the Special Edition, and I adored the film (I now own several different copies of the film, so don't worry, they got my money :P). Later on I watched the theatrical release, not knowing the difference between the two yet, and I was highly disappointed with the cut content. To me, the movie simply felt incomplete without the content that was removed. Every single scene that was cut felt like an important piece of a puzzle had been lost. While all of them are important, the scenes with the sentry guns were actually my favorite part of the movie. Having to sit there and just watch that ammo counter go down while my heart rate increased was such an important scene for me, and as pointed out, it showed that the aliens were intelligent and weren't just operating on instinct. Anyway, those are just my two cents. Love your content!

I have almost the same experience. Borrowed Aliens on VHS from a friend, which later turned out to be the Special Edition. The cover did not mention this AT ALL - hard to imagine these days when 3 added minutes of gore are plugged as an Unrated Extended Edition. So I enthusiastically bought the VHS boxset which only had the theatrical version of Aliens. I first noticed when I missed the scene with the colonists, but the worst omission was the sentry gun scene. Oh, the horror. Those scenes prove how short scenes can be quite pivotal in showing how the danger is increasing. They build great tension, through (mostly) suggestion and sound, and they implicitly show that the Aliens aren't just mindless drones. If anyone says that Aliens was all about action and has no suspense at all, I always point to these scenes and the escaped Facehuggers scene to prove them wrong. Not to mention the scene before the Aliens emerge and engage the marines for the first time.

The only thing wrong with the deleted scene was that the alien exploding footage was just reused atmospheric processor footage shown earlier in the movie. I'm not trying to disparage Gorman as far as we know this was his first time in command and it was expected to be a dull mission that under the expected terms would have been a chance for him to get a little experience running a mission and dealing with the trials of commanding a squad. We can only hope that if Burke had informed the USCM of what he knew they would have sent not only a experienced commander but also more than a single squad to deal with the situation. But on that same note had he been even mildly honest to start than he would have at least warned Hadley's hope of the potential danger if they did find anything at the location he sent them to.

IMHO the sentry scene explains why Ripley runs into so few xenomorphs when she goes to rescue Newt. There were, according to some sources, roughly 160 colonists at Hadley's Hope. If all of them had been turned into xenomorphs that'd be 160 xenomorphs. Hudson comments that the xenos were "wall to wall" in the tunnel so I think it is safe to say that between the two sentry scenes that the vast majority of xenomorphs were killed. Add to that the xenomorphs that were killed by the marines when they entered the "sanctuary" through the ceiling. By the time Ripley went to rescue Newt there were probably only a handful of xenomorphs left. And as far as the big return on the motion tracker when Newt is taken? Could have been full grown xenos, could have been a bunch of facehuggers with just a few xenos. We only saw one full grown xeno when Newt was actually taken which doesn't seem likely given how xenos tend to attack in packs throughout the rest of the movie. Maybe the queen, being fairly intelligent, sent some facehuggers to act as a diversion for her few remaining full grown xenos. She can always make more facehuggers... technically an endless supply but she needs hosts for xenos. Facehuggers are expendable.

The Sentry Gun scenes are such a good addition that one really has to wonder why they were omitted from the original cut in the first place. As mentioned by others, the scenes not only add some tension and introduce another interesting piece of equipment, but it's also important for pacing and plot purposes to lull the viewer into a false sense of security. We've seen the USCM utterly decimated by the Aliens and the survivors shell-shocked by what has occurred. But they regroup and devise a plan for survival and escape. The Sentry Gun scenes and the Aliens retreat appears to validate that plan as being the right one - allowing the survivors (and us) to breathe a little easier and think everyone will be able to walk out. That just serves to make it all the more shocking when the Aliens start crawling out from the ceiling. . .

I remember the sentry guns being used in the VHS version waaaaayyyyy back after the movie hit theaters....didn't know what version I saw as a kid...haven't seen it since.

When I was a kid in the 80's, we taped a showing of Aliens that played on our local Fox affiliate. It had almost all of the director's cut scenes included, such as the sentry guns and the stuff about Ripley's daughter. It was the only version I knew. Years later we bought a boxed set of the first three movies on VHS, and I was shocked! Why did they cut the movie?! I thought maybe it was too long to fit on tape, so this particular version was edited down for length. I had no idea it was the version most people knew, and the one I watched was an extended cut. The theatrical cut still feels wrong to me. I can't watch it.

Back then it was told to directors not to make movies too long (average of 100-120 mn tops). They had pressure from studios and producers to squeeze their tapes to fit in theater schedules (which is still the case nowadays), and public didn't like long movies at that time. It is why, for example, Once Upon a Time In America was literally butchered at the final editing in the US, cut down from its original 229 minutes duration to 139 minutes-long, thus rendering completely messy, totally non-coherent, skipping essential parts of the story without even Leone's involvment. The US theatrical movie was torn into pieces by critics, which Sergio Leone took pretty hard and stopped making movies (turned out to be his last as he died in 1989). Only Europe and the rest of the world got the full official version, and it was still shorter than Leone's full, unreleased script (269 minutes). Aliens Director's Cut version was, as per Cameron's terms "the ride we intended you to take. So, enjoy."

I agree that the Sentry Guns rocked, I don't think I would go so far to say they were the ONLY thing to kick the aliens' ass. The only real reason the marines got their asses handed to them were 2 fold, first, bad leadership, and second the unfortunate series of events that led to their ammo being cooked off in the first few seconds of the ambush, which also resulted in almost an entire fire team being destroyed/captured. Once they recovered from the ambush and because Vasquez and Drake both disebeyed orders, the marines were able to regroup and fall back, all while laying a serious smack down from the combined fire of the M56's, the flame throwers and Hicks' shotgun. We never see how many they took down, but I seriously doubt Vasquez and Drake were blindly firing down all the halls and passeges in the hive. They would have been shooting at something!

I had told a friend when we were watching on VHS once. And the scene wasnt there. yeah but many were killed. Initial combat in the hive, plus the retreat killed a few (dozen maybe not sure) - Then you have the sentry guns all but burning through 500 rds each (4 of them I think), assuming 3-6 shots per alien (an allowing for some misses) they are doing work. Then when the aliens finally get in, they kill another solid amount, then on the retreat they kill more, with more dying in the ventilation shafts. I would be surprised if there were more than 30 of the things left when the nuke goes off. Maybe 50.

  • @Xenomorphine

Not true. Those are the only Aliens which were by the Queen. The rest were on the long trek back to the cocoon chamber. Ripley had the advantage of a dropship to take her quickly where she needed to be. Look at the motion-tracker when Newt is abducted and you'll see a LOT of creatures are still coming - the absolute minimum number, with likely many more coming. Keep in mind that VERY few creatures are shown to actually die. Including in the sentry gun sequence. Several of then even die while posed in mantis-like 'ambushing' poses, implying they were creeping up and trying to out-flank them, while others distracted the guns. Just hearing screams doesn't count either way, since those could simply be threat noises (which is the same reason we don't know of Hicks even hits anything with his shotgun un the initial encounter, let alone scores actual kills). And all of that doesn't even factor in how the creatures might have the regenerative healing abilities which had been planned back for the first film's production. Watch videos of Phalanx CIWS turrets engaging missiles and mortar shells and you'll see a LOT of ammunition gets expended before necessarily hitting the target.

There are 158 colonists. If you go by the lore 157 could have been aliens cause newt survives. Now if there was large livestock like cows and pigs maybe more. But we do not know the starting numbers. I think it is safe to assume the colonists killed several of them. And some died during the experiments. Let’s say 200 as a ball park figure. I reckon by the time they get to the scenes with ripley in the hive 80% of the aliens are dead if not more.

I think this scene is better added in not only cause of the added tension but there's a deeper tactical mindset to the Xenomorphs. When the alert from the sentry guns comes in every person is there watching those screens. It's possible the Xeno's purposefully sent fodder against them to make sure all eyes were on the sentry guns and not elsewhere in the facility monitoring them getting into previously unknown areas. One major piece of evidence in favor of this is that you don't see the aliens coming from all four directions and charge the guns they don't crawl on the ceiling, floor, and both walls to add to the possibility of overwhelming the sentry guns positions they charge and in some frames are literally stood still as they're blown apart. The ones the sentries shoot are merely distractions to keep the humans from noticing the larger picture. Once the A & B guns lost their ammo the Aliens pounded on the pressure door to keep up the illusion that was their intended target. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into nothing.

In my personal opinion that is one of most chilling scenes in whole film. And one of my favourites (one of - not THE most). I have few friends that argued that this scene didn't really contributed too much to the film as whole - and while at first glance that seem to be true, I always standed my ground that it is very important scene because it showes few iinteresting things about behaviour of Xenomorphs (like mentioned ability to reason that looses become unacceptable and it is better to retreat and try diffrent approatch). Futher more this scene is one that showes Xenomorphs' weakness. Untill that point we saw them victorious in every situation. Nostromo - it managed to kill almost all crew before got killed. Hadley's Hope? Again - got whiped out by xenomorphs. Marines entering hive to rescue colonists? Same - got their butts kicked. This is first time that film showed xenomorphs actually loosing fight. But of course - that is just my opinion and nobody has to agree with it. As for whether this scene should or should not be cut out - I think it should not.

Sentry guns are a great part of the story--when included in other cuts, though, they come with other scenes that could've stayed out. The sentry guns help explain why such a tiny force didn't hesitate to go into harm's way (always a plot hole for me) but most importantly, show why the xenos are so dangerous. They can conserve losses, regroup and counterattack.

Late comment here, but I agree with most everyone else that the inclusion of the sentry gun scenes definitely helped make a great movie even better. The scenes add another layer of tension to the movie and help to further build up the suspense leading up to the Xenomorph's final assault on the group before they can make a clean escape. We get to see a little more character development from our protagonists and, as you pointed out, more insight into the intelligence and behavior of the Alien Hive. All in all it adds some more depth to the film and though it was a shame these scenes were cut from the theatrical release, its great that we got to see them in the special editions. Thanks for the awesome video and stay safe out there!

Not only are your comments spot on, but I for one think that the Sentries are vital in Aliens as they provide a short-lived yet VERY rare moment of hope, a brief moment when the Team and the audience can actually say: "take that, you suckers!!". Before and after that scene, the extreme vulnerability of the human crew is overwhelming...

I wasn't born when Aliens was released in the theatre, in fact I first saw the film in 2000 and even then I watched it at my mates place, he had only just bought a home cinema system with a projector and he was trying to show off the surround sound system and the picture quality. So he was flicking through the film, fast forwarding to the fight scenes. The sentry scene was one of the best scenes and I found it most fascinating. I watched the whole film a few weeks later, start to finish. Long story short, I have never known this film without that scene. I can't imagine how it would be without it. For me one of the best aspects of the film and one which distinguishes it from the original film is the military side of it. The first film is mostly focused on the technological and cultural evolution of humanity as imagined in the 70s and 80s, the second introduces the military side of the futuristic society. So yeah the guns are a big part of that imagination.
