    Cutting this scene out from the theatrical cut was so idiotic. It shows you that the Aliens aren't stupid and will learn over time, it also explains how they managed to find their way in through the roof.

    Two primary reasons they cut them. The first was practical - studio heads insisted no one would sit through a nearly 3 hour movie, and demanded Cameron make cuts. Thus, the entire Hadley's Hope sequences were cut, and the sentry gun scenes were cut. The second is more of an emotional one. You were ment to feel suspense and terror, at overwhelming swarms of xenos, but in an in-universe logic, with the guns in, that wouldn't be the case. 4 guns, clear firing lines, 2,000 rounds of heavy ordinance. At best, after the last stand of the colonists, and the first hive incursion by the marines, there were probably a bit over 100, maybe 120ish xenos. (One for each colonist that didn't die before hand). 2000 rounds of death down a clear corridor had to have resulted in massive casualties. I'd comfortably say that nearly 100 would've been killed. That means that the final assault would have had maybe 30 xenos tops. Still deadly, but not the unending horde that was ment to be implied to be bearing down on them. I agree that they should keep those scenes, because it does explain many other things though. The first is the xeno retreat. They suffered too many casualties and had to seek alternative entrances. They weren't overwhelmingly swarmed in the assault, and in the air ducts. There was a single xeno that reached them at the elevator to the landing pad. And when Ripley re-entered the hive, there were only the few guards and hatchery tenders because they lost so many xenos and what few remained were combing the colony complex for any other humans.

    Such an important scene. without it the Xenos attacking via the roof comes accross as 'because plot' rather than a logical next step in the xenos attempts to infiltrate the facility. @@estebanalejandrorochagonza1597 you have to keep in mind that from the Xenos perspective they do not know there are only a handful of people. Last time they attacked a stronghold setup by humans they captured almost 80 people to use as hosts. There is also just threat factor. The Xenos first encounter the marines right smack in their gestation chamber. And the end result of that encounter was many xenos dead and most of the gestation chamber set on fire. If the Xenos waited for the humans to come back again the surprise tactic isn't going to work again and the entire chamber would likely be lost. They have also never experienced military hardware before so had no idea of the difference between the original security at Hadleys and soldiers

    Yeah it's way more haunting that you can't see them, you can just hear the absolute rampage that's going on down that hallway. Genius sound design, to give you just short bursts of what the reality is, because not only does it emphasize it, it also shows you what it feels like to be a marine relying on a sentry turret. To them, it's just sound and terror. Lets your imagination go, which is what's happening to the marines too. In reality the aliens might've only sent their weakest but most nimble, and they might be missing huge scores of rounds - or ones that are dying are wiggling enough to keep firing solutions up, it might be even more horrifying in that corridor seeing Xenos just stay standing, and not advance - it might also be Xenos dying on the roof, and the acid is triggering the guns so who knows how many casualties were actually occurring. It might be a bloodbath too, the Xenos just might not care. Even scarier? The massive amount of Xenos acid blood is actually opening up new passageways, creating new ways into the facility. It's a great scene. Too bad it was cut for time, but I can see why. They sold it, but if you'd watched that scene 20-30 times in editing you might think the "effect" was too obvious, too simplistic, and some people would call it just "a gun scene" when really it's just great setup.

    @@BigMac8000 I like your take on this scene. It's a great example of "less is more". Instead of elaborate, computer generated special effects, it's something happening off screen. Just the sound of the creatures screaming, the gunshots, the ammo counters rapidly clicking down, and the reactions of the actors, creates a suspenseful, scary, mood and tension as good or better than any special effects could have.

    The clip cuts off early, but I seem to remember that the last gun quits firing while it still has several rounds of ammo left; implying that the aliens are intelligent enough to have given up their direct assault out of respect for the sentry guns, and not knowing how much ammo they have left.

    It was debated back in the day by my friends and I whether or not the Queen either made an error (assuming she ordered the assault) or was simply acting instinctively against a threat. But the losses experienced by the XenoMorph's in this scene were borderline catastrophic, at this point in Alien Lore... each XenoMorph is 'birthed' form a host, and a host can only be used once, essentially making each XenoMorph irreplaceable in this scenario, as the entire colony by now (with the exception of Newt) was deceased, having been previously captured or killed in the initial attack on the Colony. One could argue that the Queen knew this, but decided that an all out assault on the enemy interlopers was called for as If successful, the hive would be safe, regardless of the cost in warriors.

    This also provided an explanation for one of the plot holes in the movie. Assuming every colonist was used to breed a Xeno, there'd be a heck of a lot of them even after all the ones we see killed by the marines in the various firefights, this scene showed that their numbers were thinned out quite a bit by the time Ripley goes it alone to find Newt, she's only facing down the queen and a handful of drones still left.

    I believe most of James Cameron's movies of that period relied on heavy influences of low lit and "tangible" sets, coupled with no music. This combination sets the tone for a dark and intense thriller. No streamlining or far out "future" props/sets or ships. You can see the inner workings of the corridors, equipment and vehicles and to me this puts the viewers in the realm of a possible future, due the fact that we do see these in his movies. We all have seen electrical conduits, pluming, pipes, steam, etc....and again this transports the viewer to a movie that on some level can relate to. The movies of today have for the most part lost this art or style and rely on CGI to get through the audience. While CGI has defiantly come of age, it will never replace something you can see, touch and feel. The original alien also shared the same concepts as James's movies. I personally believe that to me, Alien and Aliens are the perfect examples of what Sri-if horror should be.

    Rarely you see a director's cut where the actual _new_ footage makes the movie better, more complex and entertaining instead of tedious and just simply long. The 20-30 minutes of Aliens extra footage is actually the salt and pepper of the movie: the first facehugging of the colony, the sentry guns, Hudson's rant about their arsenal, Hicks shorter rant about the remains of the arsenal, etc. Excellent, funny and well-made scenes. I don't understand why it was necessary to make Aliens' theatrical cut ~2 hrs long instead of 2,5 hrs.

    I'll write this knowing that very few people will appreciate how truly awesome these scenes REALLY are. James Cameron proved his brilliance with this. Think about this...what did you actually see in the scene ? All it was, was some really good actors looking at a 'computer screen' ( added in later in post production ) and then B roll of guns firing. You don't see aliens, there is no real action - no real stunts or anything. And each time you watch it - its this amazing tension. The full version film with these scenes left in is difficult to find, but SO worth it. I hate the cut down version by comparison. But it demonstrates what truly makes a great scene, a good atmosphere, great actors, and a visceral experience. It's all just smoke and mirrors - and it' brilliant.

The shitty thing about that is Cameron made this movie a goddamn masterpiece of cinema, It draws you into it. The term I guess is hard science fiction.

    I always thought the problem with the auto turrets was that even after you shoot an alien, the gun keeps shooting at all the alien bits flying around, assuming they work on motion detection, so you're wasting like 20-30 rounds per alien, even after it's dead.

  • @stormtempterf8058

    @stormtempterf8058

    Technically, lorewise, they should be firing at sufficiently massed targets and aiming center of mass. So they set it for anything a dog or bigger on the move, and it'll fire torso every time. They are high RoF guns though, so realistically even a small burst at a whole intact target will involve like 15-30 rounds, lol. If I were to surmise in-universe, I'd say that of the 100 or so xenos, they lost probably a bit less than half in the initial corridor, it was wide and long. The second assault, probably less than half that again, narrow corridors trimming the kills. So there'd be about 50ish left to assault the marines, while still sparing a dozen hive defenders and tenders. I think in addition to the run time concern at release, the sentry scenes were also cut because your brain does that napkin math and unconciously realizes that they're not facing a literal horde, but just a score of bugs. Still terrifying and a threat, but not as big as if the guns are cut, and people thing the hive is still at full strength when they cut the power. Just imo, mind you.

And the reason for that is that it's just the essential of the very idea of sci-fi: you have space travels, distant planets, aliens, artificial intelligence etc. - exactly everything which defies sci-fi. Just as a side note, I'm pretty sure that the flashing "Critical" ammo indicator is compliant with military spec concerning flashing elements on a screen (something like between 3 and 16 Hz no more than two distinct frequencies at any one time). It's been a long time since I read the spec, but if it is true that's amazing attention to detail.

And then of course it showed them stopping just before the guns ran out. Not scared of anything and still smart to stop.

    I think this scene is better added in not only cause of the added tension but there's a deeper tactical mindset to the Xenomorphs. When the alert from the sentry guns comes in every person is there watching those screens. It's possible the Xeno's purposefully sent fodder against them to make sure all eyes were on the sentry guns and not elsewhere in the facility monitoring them getting into previously unknown areas. One major piece of evidence in favor of this is that you don't see the aliens coming from all four directions and charge the guns they don't crawl on the ceiling, floor, and both walls to add to the possibility of overwhelming the sentry guns positions they charge and in some frames are literally stood still as they're blown apart. The ones the sentries shoot are merely distractions to keep the humans from noticing the larger picture. Once the A & B guns lost their ammo the Aliens pounded on the pressure door to keep up the illusion that was their intended target. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into nothing

    The genius of these scenes is that Cameron had a limited budget so instead of showing the all out chaos involving props, stuntmen, explosions and wired work, he went small and let the scene play out in the minds of the audience. Hearing the gun fire and screams and a few quick cuts to the monitors allows us the imagine what's happening out in the corridors which really ratchets up the tension because you don't what the xenos are planning next. It's also more effective story telling than a all out CGI fest if Cameron made it today.

    This is in the directors cut, plus a couple of other deleted scenes. One scene shows the colonists when they found the alien spacecraft. One ends up with a facehugger. Also, a scene of Ripley finding out that her daughter had died.

    these two short scenes are full of tension, those machine guns alone in those corridors against the army of aliens, you almost humanize them and feel pity, admiration and empathy with them. JC made me feel for 4 pieces of metal. This too is cinema.

    Correct. They had very little left after the drop ship crashed, which happened to also destroy much of what was left of their ground transport. They salvaged the wrecks and holed up to wait for rescue. When they realized they had no chance of lasting until a rescue ship could arrive they devised the plan to bring the second drop ship down on remote.

    the problem is those turrets simply use too much ammo and the distance set for them to fire is a little too far increasing chance of missing them.

    agreed. if the distance would have been set for closer they could've lasted longer. but, the flip side, the spray of acid could've damaged the weapons/tripods/floor if too close. it was truly a gamble no matter how you cut it. solution...slower cyclical fire? half speed would still be effective.

    The Sentry turret was meant to beat the shit out of whatever came into its cone of fire - to do so you need either a very large calliber or rapid rate of fire. Guess which one mindset was utilised in the end :P Also keep in mind it was meant as portable system which means it had to be ... portable - this sadly translates to fairly low ammo capacity - keep in mind ammo both takes space and wieghts alot - even 500 bullets would make a good part of the weight of that "turret kit". Also most creatures would either run away from the gun fire alone or would run when seeing the other crits from their pack shreeded to pieces - but aliens were no such creatures - the normal survial instincts in this case were either not present at all or supressed by the queen - this was just one huge human Banzai attack. And the sentry turrets were kinda not meant to deal with that kind of thing. :D

    Even with a high rate of fire, 500 rounds is still pretty decent for any mobile weapon platform, and conventional enemies wouldn't just keep throwing themselves at the gun until it ran out of ammo

    It wouldn't work in pre-modern battles. Unless they used magic. But even then machine guns barely work in Steam Punk and really only if they are massive defenses rather than fire arms. BUT they should have more scenes like this in movies where it applies :)

    I saw this in theaters in '86 and remember this scene but in later viewings, I think on VHS, it was cut out. I'm not sure why this scene was cut at all because it shows how numerous the Aliens were and how they were willing to sacrifice themselves to test the human defenses. Weird decision by the editor, studio, whomever...

Every time I rewatched the movie on VHS, I couldn't understand why it wasn't there or if I had made it up in my head. But I was on the edge of my seat the whole time in the theater, and I'll never forget watching the ammo count go down, followed by the aliens emerging from the ceiling.

    Yup, this scene was in the original cut of the film, when it was released in the theater. I saw the film on the weekend it was released. Now I'm reading all these comments by people insisting that this scene was cut. Well, maybe after the initial release. But I was there, in the cinema, watching this scene back in 1986. This was a pivotal, and memorable, scene.

    I still believe the first 2 Alien movies are some of the most influencial pieces of media for videogames in the 90s, particularly shooters. Tiresome as they become, a defense torret section always aspired to be this intense (the best is probably HL 2: episode 2 torret section)

    So... The corporate weasels said the colony had 60 or 70 families. If we take an average of 5 people per family, and each and every colonist was used to host a Xenomorph, that's at most 350 Xenomorphs hatched. They had 4 sentry guns set up, each with 500 rounds, for a total of 2000 rounds. There was definitely some inefficient shooting going on there.

  • @Cryofax

    @Cryofax

    9 жыл бұрын

    ***** I suppose there could be others in addition to the colonists. But the most likely scenario is the colony was made up of workers and their families. The ones who "fought the threat and died" were the colonists themselves, using improvised weapons and small arms fire. On top of that they had to eat some colonists for food so the number is likely far less that 350.

    Jutrzen 158? That reinforces my point then. How do 158 Xenos get by 2000 rounds of ammo? P.S. Good catch seeing the total on the welcome sign. I see no indication there were any other people there but those colonists. So maximum Xenomorphs would be 156 (158 minus Newt minus Woman we see chestbursted).
