Swab Summer and really CGA is a huge mind game. Don't let that get to you. Sadly I didn't pick up on that right away. It's like a boat. It only sinks if you let the water from the outside in!

Watching your video reminded me of my experiences in boot camp. Frankly, we were so busy all the time that I wasn't homesick. My first Christmas away from home was way worse since I knew I wouldn't be seeing my folks. Thanks for your insight. Another awesome video! Semper Paratus!

Thanks Erin. My son will be joining you all at the USCGA this coming Swab Summer, and all you're saying hits home. As much as I want him to spread his wings and fly, I already miss him. But more so, I'm so very happy for the experiences I know he'll have, the growth and amazing opportunities. Thanks for the tips and insights. You're helping create an extended community for those of us preparing for these next amazing chapters. God bless you and thank you for your amazing videos.

Erin, Great Video. I watched it when you put it out but failed to comment. Great Tips and Suggestions...I really like the "plan for moving as a group". My Swab Summer experience was a long time ago...and the memory of it is a little hazy...but a few things remain crystal clear: (1) Back then, when we walked into Chase Hall we had to hand over a check for initial uniform issue. In my family we didn't write checks before we needed to...so there I was writing the check on the hood of my parents car outside Chase Hall while Dad was watching over my shoulder and Cadre were yelling at my new classmates and me to "move it, move it, ..." My hand was shaking so much I could barely sign my name. Dad said, very STERNLY... "Knock it off, get it done!" Mom stayed in the car to hide her tears. (2) I had home sickness and questioned my decision to attend CGA. One of my Cadre saw I was struggling, but didn't want me to leave. He encouraged me to talk to the Track Coach since that was a sport I planned to do. I went to Leamy Hall one day at lunch, the Track Coach wasn't there, but the Athletic Director saw me, clearly not where I was supposed to be and looking upset. He stopped me and asked what I was doing there, and then we sat on a bench ourside the door to Leamy and talked for about 45 minutes (or so). He helped me sort through my feelings (and yes fears), and realize that CGA had a lot to offer. I was a new Cadet after that. I found out years later that Dad had a phone call with my Summer Ensign (supervisor of the Cadre for our Company). The Summer Ensign told Dad he would have to "give permission in writing" to let me leave... but he told Dad..."don't be in a hurry to send the letter"... and suggested Mom send some home made baked goods... a few days later I got a box of Mom's fabulous Chocolate Chip Cookies!!! Yum!! Bottom line... as you state in your video, Swab Summer is tough...but it's not impossible. It's all very dooable and the 1st step in becoming a Coast Guard Officer. Go into it with an open mind, that you're going to take each day and event as it comes and hang in there...You can do it! I have thanked God many times for the Cadre who saw I was struggling emotionally, the Summer Ensign who didn't want me to leave, and having the Athletic Director be in the right place at the right time to help me make the right decision...and it was right for me...resulting in an exciting and rewarding 30 year career.

Erin, My son will start is journey at USCGA this coming Swab Summer. Your videos have been super helpful. I have a question about the dorm rooms. Will my son be able to connect to the WiFi in his room? His grandparents wanted to buy him a digital frame for his room that family can send him pictures and also can do video calling. Will the frame work in his room? Also, what cellphone plan should we be looking at? Have you done any videos on using the 529 plan, that was saved for college, at USCGA?

While I was at the academy, we could only have our laptop and phones (I ended up using my unlimited data plan instead for my phone) on the wifi. With 1000+ cadets using it, it got bogged down sometimes. I know they were working on expanding wifi but I wouldn’t plan on him being able to connect that many devices. As far as cell phone plans, I personally was fortunate enough to stay on my family’s plan throughout the academy because it was cheaper to pay them than have my own. Some families decided to have their child pay for their own plan. It’s really up to what you decide as a family. And I’m not too familiar with the 529. I know Nolan’s family ended up using his for his siblings and it could also be saved for grandchildren down the line since it doesn’t expire. There are some expenses like uniforms, and books that cadets have to pay for out of pocket that I know some scholarships I had covered but I’m not sure if they would qualify as education expenses under the 529 🤔
