Gotta love a Coasties! If you're a boater on US navigable waterways and find yourself in peril, these heroes will tackle any obstacle, battle any weather and or seas, put their personal safety on the line, even put their lives at risk to come to your aid. If the USCG knows you're in trouble, and have so much as a hint of your location, you can be as sure that they are coming for you as you are that the sun will rise again. No one ever, anywhere, is more dedicated and worthy of ultimate respect,.

I am a welder and repaired a few of these boats, they beat these boats really hard. It amazes me the dedication of the USCG top notch skippers that put it all on the line for anyone in distress. I also built the RBM boats for awhile I have to say Kvichack makes the best boat hands down. Big thanks to all who serve this great nation.

Can only imagine the fear and grave concern not only for the highly priced very expensive boat but more importantly the lives of many sailors on board trusting in the decision of the captain to get them through the swells... No captain wants to lose that trust or endanger his crew to the power of the sea...

Those are NOT test trials they are photos taken at Cape Disappointment (Columbia River Bar) USCG Nat. MLB School. There are a few thrown in from elsewhere but are taken during training and daily operations.

Coming in from a day of fishing I saw a boat roll over on Clatsop Spit. They were lucky I saw this happen. The Cape D guys were there in no time at all and rescued two. I have total respect for the US Coast Guard!

@mrstuntdevil1 It is a combination of the engine (heaviest part on the boat) being on the bottom and air tight compartments all the way up. Because the engine is on the bottom it wants to go to the bottom very fast. Between the engine and airtight compartments the '47 will self right relatively quickly.

I was there during that 47' MLB flip over while on the other MLB. They got hurt pretty good. The OINC broke his leg and the cox'n broke his nose. But all in all they all survived so it's all good and lessons learned!!

The first of the 47's to actually roll over was declared a total loss ( I believe it was the 47201, NO loss of life), in '04-05 off Yaquina Bay. The 44's, which the 47's replaced, were much better in surf, but much slower. As a North Pacific mariner, my hat goes off to these folks. They ALWAYS go out, but they don;t always come back. So quit yer pee-whinin'' about the music and appreciate the sentiment of the vid...

If you mishandle the boat in heavy seas she may roll/capsize...However, the 47 will forgive you and survive with little to no damage. Properly handled this vessel is able to operate in ANY sea condition and carry out her mission not just station keep. As a grad of the USCG Nat MLB school at Cape D, where most of those photos were taken I completely disagree with your comments about the "incompetence of the USCG operators". In 37 years on MLB's it was the best Hands on training I ever got! DGH

Submarines are built for travelling underwater. So they can't be sunk by rough seas. Why don't they use submarines for rescue missions?

@colpoys1 If it flips, it will go back right side up, the boats are designed that way, and I seriously doubt that anyone will die. They are strapped in so even if the boat rolls they are attached to the boat.

the 47' MLB is not fake designed to self right its self in under 8 seconds. They are also self bailing. The way they can right them selfes is the overheaad mast is an air tight compatment which causes the top of the vessel to want to right it self also the desiel engine sits low in the deep v cut hull causing that to want to go the the bottom rapidly

I was referring to the couple of shots were it looked like they were at a dead stop lying broadside in the trough. Been on lots of surf drills on 44's Oregon, and the Great lakes as the Engineer, not Coxswain. Also did surf drills at Cape D on the 44's and 52's. Don't remember that maneuver as being highly regarded! It kinda looked like they were trying to roll her.

The entire reason you go out is to rescue people. They aren't doing this for fun.. and you can't expect the injured half frozen people you pick up to hang onto the boat for the trip back. I was on Kodiak doing SAR and aviation training. On many occasions we showed up just in time. The people we picked up would have frozen to death on the way back to shore if our superstructure was open. An enclosed space is very important... this thing isn't for joy riding.
