Hey, we also use those USB testers for testing flashlights! We find them to be pretty accurate. The models more expensive than this one shown and look more fancy are not worth it and are less useable. The solder joints on any make to the USB-A aren't the strongest, so when pulling them out of a power brick give them a side to side wiggle while pulling, dont just yank them out. We've gone through 2-3 over the years. Many of them also have USB-C out's on the top side to power things which is fine, but dont use it on a laptop or something wanting 16, 19V ect. It might fry it because it has no idea what's going on and wont just charge it like a 5V wall adapter will.

I have had one for over 4yrs now, great tool to have or just as a gadget. I did however pull mine apart and fix those solder joints and beefed them up a bit with more solder. Make sure the cable you plug in has a toight like a tiger connection or you will notice when you wiggle it will fluctuate from resistance. love you guys! ❤ have fun and thanks for the awesome content!

​@@FunkFPV- the fancy ones add functionality to detect and trigger Fast Charging algorithms. This allows you to test charging devices that use QuickCharge (QC), USB Type-C Power Delivery (PD), etc. . They can do a lot more too, but that's the main thing you are paying for... And USB-C with PD is becoming increasingly common since the standard USB spec of 5V can only reliably provide 2A (10W) of power. . You can also buy external Triggers that can allow these simple USB meters to "decoy" and pretend to be a Fast Charging device. You can buy them only for a few $ each, but you need to get at least QC3 and PD3 capability to cover the most common use cases.

People think I have the most interesting job and constantly ask me about it. When in reality I’m fascinated by you working on forklifts and checking out power tools. I hope we get some more of those “Forklift Mechanic Vlogs” sometime again!

Lovely job Funk this is a great video so many people are just to scared to ask what these things are for on the basis of looking stupid which in itself is stupid if you don’t know then ask ( just make sure you’re not asking a troll) this is how we all learn but people seem to think it’s a embarrassment that they don’t understand. The embarrassment is when you get asked to explain and are left stumbling around like a man pissing into the wind! As always Funk a pleasure and that final scene had me crying just to see things coming to life and jumping out of your hands made me feel normal as that will happen to me every time I do something when someone is watching lol. I have the new version of that Dewalt charger the DCB094K and I love that thing. Wish milwuakee would come out with an updated version of their m12 portable charger

I've had the UM34C for a few years now and yeah works well, the app is handy too, well worth the change from the jar.

IMPORTANT INFO regarding mAh Capacity measurements.... The mAh capacity of powerbanks is the rating of the cells inside, which have a nominal average of 3.7V (actual = 4.2V full charge, and 3.0V low voltage cutout). . A 10,000 mAh pack is rated to STORE 10,000 mAh x 3.7V = 37,000 mWh (milliWATT hours). However the powerbank needs to convert that 3.0 to 4.2V into a stable 5V (or higher) for you phone to use. . The average powerbank will have a conversion efficiency of 90-95%, less at higher currents. Let's run with 90% to make the maths easier... . 10,000 mAh cells x (Average) 3.7V = 37,000 mWh stored x 90% efficiency = 33,300 mAh output. However, the nominal output is at 5V, so 33,300 ÷ 5 = 6,600 mAh output at 5V to the phone! . So based on mAh, the 10,000 mAh looks like it's only giving 6,600 mAh when you test it. Lots of people get tricked by this! 😮 For fast chargers, the reduction is worse. The same 10,000 mAh pack would only give 3,700 mAh at 9V fast charge, or just 2,750 at 12V. . In reverse, your 2Ah (2,000 mAh) tool battery is rated for nominal 18V, so it's cell capacity is 36,000 mWh. You would expect that with 90% efficiency it will provide 32,400W at 5V. Therefore the phone charging capacity will be about (32,400÷5) 6,480 mAh at the phone. . For capacity comparisons, the thing at matters is Watts (mWh) of total power, and not the mAH. 😉

Thanks for this - very useful info, broken down into a way that makes sense! Ive been testing a bunch of batteries recently and found the usable capacity to be about 50% of the advertised capacity. I was reluctant to draw conclusions because of expected losses, but I couldn't find any thorough explanations on what to expect. Your post really helps. Cheers!

Most USB chargers that have 2 output sockets are being fed by 1 power circuit so the rating is a total not each , the extra plug is for convenience of powering 2 devices.

I did think it was a grinder at first. Well, my exact thought was “looks like a grinder”

​@@FunkFPV- the cables with display are about $2-3 each on ALI using the mobile app and choosing the US$1.99 daily deals page. The little meters are NOT accurate, but good to give a wide approximation, or for comparison purposes.

Cool tech. Unfortunately, they would survive long in my world. Too many exposed parts.

I actually have been using that DeWalt USB charger for years it stays on my cart so I don't lose my phone and headphones.

I keep mine in my center console. All the power outputs are dead when my truck isn’t running so it comes in handy.

I had seen those usb testers , hadn't though if its potential for battery testing . That function in itself makes it a useful gadget to have , and i already have an electronic load . Good to know , good review , thank you. Ps. When you had all three plugged together , saying that you were adjusting by this little pot over here , might have added fuel to the allegations of the charger being a grinder .

I made some custom USB cables that break out the VBUS line(s) to 4mm banana jacks. That lets me use my benchtop multimeter (6.5-digit Siglent SDM3065X-SC) and/or DC load (Siglent SDL 1020X-E) for testing. Useful for things like laptop chargers that can put out 20V on USB-C, which will fry the cheap testers. Lots more work though, particularly for USB-C PD connections needing active negotiation. And way, way more expensive, not worth it if all you're testing is small portable USB devices.

also "Ruideng" is the manufacturer of the meter they make a bunch of other good electronics stuff.

Buy a Toyota. If you can’t afford a new one buy used. I know I’m biased but it’s the best brand I’ve worked on.

i have a dewalt car charger that i can that i can tell lie on its max output on oneof the usb ports. i have to use the power outlet on it because the usb's are so slow.

No, a USB tester (and Load) is only designed for low power, up to a few Amps of current and max 15 Watts or so. . A tool battery needs to provide 20 or 30 Amps. So to test it you need a very large Load and special metering. . Any test made with a tiny USB device on a power tool pack would only provide testing results under very small power loads, like a light, radio or charger like shown here. It would be totally meaningless for the intended usage like a drill or grinder. . Generally, the cheapo packs from China fall into 2 categories. The first is using reharvested old laptop cells, which may still have reasonable mAh capacity but are NOT designed to high Amperage in Power Tools. . The 2nd type use no-name new cells that are usually rated max 10A, and will work OK if there are 2 parallel strings (eg: larger size packs rated 4Ah or higher). But they overheat and get big voltage sag when loaded with a big Impact, Grinder or Saw. . Those cheap packs seem OK when brand new but the hammering of high Amp loads on the cells causes them to fail very quickly. It's impossible to know exactly what cells are inside the cheap packs, and the sellers tend to lie. . Genuine Dewalt, Mills, Makita etc use very special LG and Samsung INR type cells that often have pretty low mAh ratings but are specifically designed to continually provide the huge Amp loads often needed of portable tools. It's those expensive cells (over $10 each) that provide "The beans".

I’m not real smart. But for the average person, couldn’t they just charge their batteries and time how long they last with the average tool. And if it doesn’t last quite as long, their battery effectiveness is in decline.? Gauge it against other batteries that you have.? Instead of spending $30 to find out precisely how well your batteries are accepting a charge.

Seems like you need that battery capacity tester for your camera since you apparently don't know the charge state of it! Also oh yea, Apple is really saving the environment with their lack of a charging block with their phones, because you KNOW you're saving the environment when the thing you included with your phone is now sold separately and in it's own plastic packaging that the environment is better off.
