Probably, the only time i heard of it was when Deion Sanders was in college and was asked to run a track meet without practicing and heard he won against some world class sprinters. Also, regarding above, the surface Usain Bold ran on is probably better than the surface the combine players run on.

@@seanogrady2629 I remember back in the early 1990s during the Super Stars competition Deon ran in a 100 yard competition against a wide receiver name Flipper Anderson. Anderson was a sprinter turned football player. He crushed Deon in the 100 yards. The 40 yard dash is not a true measure of speed. It only measures how quick someone can approach top speed. Most world class sprinters don't reach their top speed until around 60-70 meters into the race.

One thing not taken into consideration is that Usain Bolt's 10-40 was in METERS. John Ross' 10-40 was in YARDS. A meter is 3 3/8" longer than a yard so Bolt also ran a slightly greater distance in less time.

This is about running it in the style of the NFL combine...which he did. There is ZERO chance that he runs 4.06. No human has ever come close. Once again, the fastest the 40 has ever been run was by Christian Coleman and he ran 4.12. Christian Coleman is faster than Usain Bolt over 40 yards because he is one of the best Olympic starters of all-time. "American Christian Coleman currently holds the men's world record in the 60 metres with a time of 6.34 seconds." In other words, Christian is the fastest person to ever run 60 meters, not Usain Bolt and his best after multiple tries was 4.12 under Combine conditions. During Bolt's world record 100 meter his 60 split was supposedly 6.29 but that is not measured electronically. Your idea is both dumb and not humanly possible. 4.06 has never been run and it may never be run. So G-file your idea there killer. It makes you sound like you have no idea what you are talking about. I have no idea what Bolt's best time could be, but given his slow start times, 4.18 or so is more likely.

Even though Bolt was clocked at 4.18 in his 9.58 run, you still haven't factored out reaction time. The time it takes for runners to react ro the starters gun. Which is usually 0.12 to 0.18 seconds. Ross does not have to react to the gun before he starts. The clock starts after he starts to move. Where as the gun starts Bolt's clock before he starts running. So the visualization of Bolt and Ross running is in accurate. It has Ross ahead at the beginning and Bolt passing him. If you take the reaction time of 0.146 off of Bolt's first 10m time you will get 1.494 which is .004 off of Ross' 1.49. Then take the 0.146 off of Bolt's 4.18, you'll get 4.03 semi automatic time. Do the graphics for that. Bolt and Ross start ot almost dead even. Bolt then destroys Ross 4.03 to 4.22.

4.18 is pure running without RT. Ross` time 1.49 is hand timed that is why it is so much faster and that is the reason we compare only flying 30.

Bolt just ran the 40 in 4,22s in normal shoes in his gatorade promotion. Could very well be faked tho. Not only Coleman and Bolt but a lot of professional sprinters could run faster than 4,22s. And much faster if they specially prepared for it and ran it in cleats.

By the way, in Usain Bolt’s world record race, the timers didn’t start when he moved, they started when the gun went off. There is delay in between when the gun went off and him moving. This just makes bolt even more impressive

They also use blocks which is a MASSIVE advantage for sprinters. I ran track. If they used blocks forty times would improve.

Around 2012 while I was mowing I ended up disturbing a hornets nest, I can't prove it, but it seemed that I cover 40 yards in close to 1.8 seconds.🤓

The sport of football has messed up many possible great sprinters. The requirements to be great at football don't align with what it takes to be a great sprinter. It is amazing to see a football player run in the 4.2 range but to compare him to bolt or any other world champion caliber sprinter is ridiculous. They just can't match up.

They don't match up for a reason though. Sprinters don't have to do these things. 1. Memorize a giagantic playbook that has many intricacies. 2. Analyze the Defense that's just as complicated as the Offenses in real time without knowing the exact Defensive play. 3. They have to simultaneously worry about hand placement,cutting,angle changes, change speeds, and head placement. 4. They have to directly face off against super athletes ranging anywhere from 5'8-180 to 6"5-330. 5. They have to worry about actually catching a football while facing all of these athletic freaks after doing everything I said above. 6. Then after the catch you have to out run,juke,spin,hurdle, and run through all of these super athletes. If you just threw Bolt on the NFL field in his prime without many years of prior football experience he'd get lit the fuck up and possibly seriously Injured. On the flipside these NFL players will get dogged on the track. Even though both athletes run they might as well be running on different planets. I do think someone like Hill, Johnson, or Hester could've done some real damage if they had just focused on the track. Either way Bolt Is a unicorn in running no matter what sport.

That is not possible by anyone. Christian Coleman ran 4.12 which is the fastest 40 a human has run under electronic timing conditions like in the Combine. Bolt was no where near as fast as Coleman is over the first forty yards. Bot was never even a good starter. What y'all don't understand is... Athletes running 40 yards prepare for exactly 40yards, while those for 100m prepare for 100m. It's different mechanics. If bolt puts all his energy and runs the 40 yards...damn!

Any world class sprinter specifically training for the 40-yd dash instead of the much longer 100-m sprint could legitimately have a chance to run sub-4 seconds, especially considering they don't need to react to the gun but would be timed automatically from first movement. It's not even a contest!!

Ross didn't have to react to the start line gun either? This isn't even a contest!?!? In track, the clock starts with at the gun's firing, not when on the player's movement reaction. That alone is... 0.2 of a second! Subtract this from Bolt's 4.18....and he's sub 4! So Ross, shut up and play football.....

Bolt is an OK starter and freakishly good at it for his height. In his biography he said the best starter was Asafa Powell who actually broke his starting blocks in training as he was putting so much power into his start. I can see Asafa doing about 4.1

I know this video for some time now and all this talk about John Ross and his challenge to the big name. I'm glad that "The Way to Win" didn't just show a visual representation of how Ross would ultimately lose but also why. I didn't know that the 40 yard dash was hand-timed for the NFL and if that's the case, the real time in actuality when electronically timed would be much slower than John Ross' record. Also, I really liked the outro theme for this. It fits the sport well and also, whatever happened to your other video entitled "The Fastest Wind-Aided Race in History?" That was another top quality video as well as the mini documentary named "Never do this to win a race." Whatever happened to those great videos? They had class and quality and I was surprised to see them missing last night. A good few videos have either been deleted or taken down by KZread........... Is there any way that these supposedly deleted or banned videos can be restored?..................

The NFL stopped using hand timing after 1998. They use semi automatic timing which is still started by hand but stopped by laser. There are only 3 forms of timing. 1. Hand: started and stopped by hand. 2. Semi automatic: started by hand stopped automatically (laser). 3. Fully automatic: automatically started usually by a gun stopped automatically (laser). Electronic is just the way the time is displayed. Usually on a clock stand or scoreboard. Electronic can be any of the 3 timing methods.

Bolt catch up speed is insane. Once he lifts up his head... it’s over!!! 😂

Someone needs to edit this and put the thug life shades and music on bolt after he "none, zero chance" 😂

I was just about to mention Coleman with his 4.12s in the 40 yard dash but some of the comments down below say it wasn't fully ratified as yet and just recently Bolt himself tied John Ross' 4.22s while jogging at the end and not properly clothed for the race (normal shoes and sweatpants). It's still an uncommon event but a good preparation race for starts in the sprints. Nah, but Bolt would get it. Blake should try it too.

Lester Orie Coleman’s time was using actual timing gates so it was timed as accurately as it gets so he has the fastest ever time of 4.12. All these people saying it was hand are talking shit because they can’t take that someone ran faster than bolt. last year coleman broke the 60m wr with 6.34 so I’m sure he would be able to run around 4.05 now in the 40

Lester Orie rich eisen also did a sprint while there and he ran 5.8 40. He usually runs at a little above 6 every year for his rich runs charity so I wonder if the timing was a little screwy

Here is the difference, running on turf with football cleats and running on a track with spikes. There is a massive difference in time and the NFL combine does that on purpose to get a better estimate of straight line speed

I have a few questions. How does the combine allow the beginning of 40yd dash to be hand timed? Doesn't Bolt have a few advantages when it comes to equipment? Starting blocks, sprint spikes, and the actual track surface itself. Do prospective NFL players really hope to beat professional sprinters, much less the fastest man in the world? It just doesn't make sense to me, as a spectator

Bolts advantage is hes the fastest man in the world in a Sprint and not one nfl would realistically touch him . if he actually trained for the 40 wore the same compression suit and cleats nfl players wear when they wear it he probably would have ran it in 4 flat or maybe even 3.9 MAYBE . he hit 4.2 jogging at the end in sweats lol

the beginning is timed by him moving his hand when he starts he meant. the whole dash is handtimed as well but just for initial times before the official one comes in

Bolt wasted 0.16 secs for reaction time , in the nfl combine , they start the clock at the first movement from the players , usain bolt could run close to 4 secs flat in the combine

Yeah the hand timed starts make zero sense. Fully automated laser starts should be implemented at end beginning until the end. Too much human error. It reminds me when Kevin White was clocked faster than Amari Cooper, but Coop beat him on simul-cam

Mr. Ku he ran the 40 yards with sneakers and normal clothes and wasn’t even trying and still tied the time

It’s also different in track where you have a different surface, different shoes, and a block to help boost your acceleration

Right but in the NFL 40 you start running then the clock starts. Where in track and field the clock starts before you start running.

In track and field, the timer starts at the sound of the starting pistol. There is a time gap between the moment the pistol sounds to the moment the runner moves. But at the NFL combine there is NO time gap... the timer doesn't start until the runner moves. So Usain Bolts 40 time would be FASTER than his known 40 yard splits because his 40 yard splits were in races with a starting pistol.

@ 0:36 Um, no. It has zilch to do with agility, and quickness is _not_ the same as speed. This test is all about acceleration, period.

I don't think a lot of people especially in other sports understand the speed , skill and determination it takes to be a track star. Even the guys running in the back of a 100m coming in last is running low 10s , running in the 10 range is extremely fast .But when you get to the sub 10 range ( running 9 second range) its rare to find people capable of doing this. People don't understand how fast 27.8 mph is for a human to run . Just respect track athletes and stop disrespecting them by comparing them to football or soccer players cause they are in another class of speed .

In track they dont start the timer on the runners go like when they do on the 40 yard time. So that 4.18 you have to take in account for Usain Bolt’s reaction time to the gun.

From exeperince I feel much slower on a football field in shoes made for moving side to side than on a track in shoes made for propelling yourself forward

Ross' time is actually about 4.5s when timed olympic style (minus reaction time) with high speed cameras. GIven the same protocol Bolt's time is about 3.8 - 3.85s. Ross would never at any stage be ahead of Bolt in this race, not even the first step

Usain Bolt ran a forty under the same conditions that they use at the combine and he tied Ross. Bolt is not the fastest sprinter over the first forty either. So until Bolt improves his forty time he is only as fast as the NFLs fastest

@@argeus3639 Yes, I have no doubt he would beaten the record in his prime and track attire. Wouldn't be dumb enough to argue against that happening, but he is not in his prime nor is he in his track attire. However over forth yards and having the gun start on first movement I doubt very much that spikes would make a ton of difference. That was artificial turf, not chewed up football grass. What is known is that he tied Ross' record. Until he runs faster his fastest forty under combine conditions is 4.22. You are only as fast as your official timing. Not faster. That is why these things are timed. I am taking a guess, but since Coleman has a faster first forty split than Bolt (one tenth of a second) then Bolt would have run a similar time in his prime. Bolt's potential best 40 time would be around 4.13 maybe a little higher. The people on here who think he goes under 4 seconds are simply clueless. No human being is that fast. They are also clueless as to how fast 4.22 really is. There is a VERY small group of people who can run that fast on the planet at any given time. Most are in the Olympics, one is in the NFL. Maybe two.

@@wadopotato33 Bolt actually ran in more difficult conditions. In sweatpants? Flats? But Bolt's 4.22 is suspected of being staged, so I don't fully believe it. I agree that Bolt at his peak would run a similar time like Coleman's. I think a lot of top sprinters would be below 4.22, however, not counting elites like Coleman, Asafa, etc. It's certainly a fast time though.

@@argeus3639 Bolts time is only suspected of being staged by internutters. It is called conspiracy theory. There is zero proof that it was staged. Bolt ran under the same conditions. Same Track material. Same timing method. Same everything. Only he didn't dress perfectly for the occasion. That is what you want to say. The conditions were the same. His dress was less than optimal. There are sprinters that would beat that time, but Coleman and a few other spriters are actually faster than Bolt over forty yards. Ben Johnson in his steroid prime was a great starter. What seperated Bolt is his top end speed. Bolt is just getting to top speed at about 60m Ross has less than zero chance of beating Usain in 100 M's. Ross has a pretty good shot at beating him or at least being competetive in the forty. The forty is more about being quick to get up to speed rather than a true top speed. Usain Bolts top end is unmatched and it will be a long time before anyone does. He was very special and unique, but not over forty. There have been a few people who could beat him at that distance.

You should also mention that reaction time in a 100 meter sprint also adds a few hundredths. When you get to choose when you start, there is no reaction time.

Bolt was never known to be a slow starter. He had an excellent start. He has the second fastest start in history in all of his records. The only one that ran a faster start was Su Bingtian.

It’s utterly ridiculous to say ANY NFL player could beat a world class sprinter at running, let alone THE BEST of them... it’s as ridiculous as saying a professional boxer would beat a professional MMA fighter at MMA (or vice versa)...

Bob Hayes was an Olympic gold medalist (100 meters) who succeeded in the NFL. Back then a wide receiver could be chucked anywhere on the field until the ball is thrown. He's also a Hall of Famer. If Usain Bolt can catch a football, I think he could do well.

The split time you used for Bolt was in metres. 30m is 32.8 yards, which means his 30 yard split would be even lower.

It's over 40 yards...not a sprint distance. Over 40 yards Ross' time IS world class.

While this isn't surprising, the context should be taken into account. Most importantly, combine athletes don't run against an opponent. Whereas sprinters like Bolt are running against several at a time. The adrenaline from the competitive urge to win is undoubtedly a boost. I'd actually like to see this happen. Not that I'd necessarily expect defeat, but I bet you'd see some lower 40 times. As a matter of fact, the competitive aspect would be a thrilling thing to implement into the combine. Line guys up that enter the draft for the same or similar positions. That would be fun!

One correction: Track & field doesn’t use semi-electronic timing. It’s fully electronic. Also, if you’re comparing Bolt’a time from his WR run keep in mind that everything in the Olympics is metric. He covered 30 METERs in 2.54 seconds, not 30 yards. A meter is a little over 3” longer than a yard. Bolt ran about 8 feet farther from the 10 to 40 meter mark than Ross did from the 10 to 40 yard mark.

Remember Usain Bolt also started his race on command, so he lost 0.15 seconds roughly immediately due to reaction time, along with retiring from sprinting 18 months earlier and running in flats and sweatpants. Undoubtedly under similar conditions to ross’ 40y dash, Bolt would destroy ross’ time

It was half hand time bc it was done NFL combines test approved which is hand timed bc although it finished with a laser, the start was started by a human pressing that start button which makes it absolutely inaccurate! But there is no one in the NFL that is remotely as fast, even in the start as Christian Coleman. But I don't have to tell you that. Keep up the great videos! I appreciate and love them!

if it’s not official then it can’t be argued. three hill, undoubtedly the fastest player right now has been hand timed at 4.21, but since its not an official time, it can’t be used.
