I saw this game live on TV back in 85! It was really amazing! Kakapanindig balahobo seeing Samboy block shots of the taller Americans harap harapan and Caidic bombing away those triples! Of course who can forget Chip Engelland, all throughout the tournament he did not show his scoring prowess so that he would not get scouted by the opposition. But came championship time, he unloaded 43 points! The US never knew what hit them! Brilliant strategy by Coach Ron Jacobs. Kudos also to Dennis Still who at 6'8" was a forward playing center against taller opponent. Jeff Moore was a pillar of strength also and of course The Director Hector Calma who ran rings around his guard, Franz Pumaren also contributed points from beyond the arc. The best Philippine team ever! The US team they beat here was no pussy team as some of their players went on to play in the NBA.

Greatest moment for the future SMB players at 6 ft. Idol Samboy Lim best regard by Coach Ron Jacobs as his "Micheal Jordan" and 6'2" Allan Caidic the Filipino "Larry Bird" for his deadly clutch shooting. The heart and soul of the philippine basketball along with Hec Calma, Franz Pumaren, Yves Dignadice and Elmer Reyes. Thank you! naturalized players Chip Engelland, Jeff Moore and Dennis Still for providing height and heft to the RP Squad.

Kakamiss ang tandem nina Chip Engeland at Allan Caidic. Ito yung team na tumambak sa China sa ABC Championship sa Malaysia nung 1985.

Naalala ko pa game na ito. Truly legendary, Chip scored 43pts, si Caidic 24 ata. Pero game changer yung tatlong consecutive 3pts ni Samboy. Kumakalas na nun USA pero nadikit ni Samboy.

This is one of the golden moment of Pinoy basketball..Ron Jacobs and the NCC boys shocked the USA and the world !

Rodrigo Reyes Ummm, pero mga bangko naman sa NBA yung mga yun. At di rin nagtagal. Actually, marami rin sa mga naging import sa PBA ay nakapaglaro na rin sa NBA. Pero di ibig sabihin nun ay nagtagal sila sa NBA. Karamihan sa kanila ay bangko o kaya naman ay na-cut, kaya nga sila naglaro sa PBA eh. Ang totoong sukatan ay kung yung mga professionals na mga starters din sa kani-kanilang team ang makakalaro natin. Mas gugustuhin ko pang matalo natin ang team ng China kesa sa USA team na ito.

The fact na nakuha ka diyan ibig sabihin capable ka hindi ka Lang na bibigyan ng playing time. Tsaka Yung mga import na nakapaglaro sa nba, hindi po ba magagaling yon? Nakita niyo naman pag naglaro sa Pba very dominant sila, kasi nga ibang level pag Naka abot na ng NBA.

Para sa mga gustong malaman kung gano kagaling mga players ng US na nakalaban ng Philippines; Kenny Gattison was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the 3rd round (55th overall) of the 1986 NBA draft. A 6'8" forward-center, he in nine NBA seasons for 3 different teams. He played for the Phoenix Suns (1986-87, 1988), Charlotte Hornets (1989-95) and Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96).[1] On February 22, 1996 he was traded by the Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic, and on August 9, 1996 the Magic traded him to Utah Jazz, but he did not appear in any games for those teams. In his NBA career, Gattison played in 494 games and scored a total of 3,923 points. His best season as a professional came during the 1991-92 NBA season as a member of the Hornets, appearing in 82 games (71 starts) and averaging 12.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.[1] Gattison's 0.529 career field goal percentage with the Charlotte Hornets is the best in the franchise history. Isa pa dalawa daw mvp dyan sa san mig, si Lim ng ncaa at caidic ng uaap tapos yung core mo la salle standouts. Venom 12 Ummm, salamat pero alam ko po ibig sabihin ng Divison 1. Graduate po ako sa isang Div. 1 school sa California. Pero kait na division 1 pa, maliit na porsyento lang ang nada-draft sa NBA. Bilangin mo kung ilang ang nada-draft every year. Eh libo ang division 1 players sa buong America. Tapos, sa mga na-draft na yun iilan lang ang tatagal sa NBA. At bilang lang ng daliri sa kamay ang magiging successful (not necessarily superstar ha). Ang point ko, di porke division1 playet ay NBA-quality ma. Malaking accomplishment talaga ng mga Pinoy ang matalo nila yung mga Div. 1 player na yun. Totoo. Pero yung mga pinadala na yun ehy malabong sila ang pinakamagagaling sa batch nila. Dahil yung mga top prospects from college usually di na sumasali sa mga international competiton na ganyan dahil baka nga naman ma-injure pa sila bago sila ma-draft sa NBA. Anyway, ang point ko, di natin pwede basta-basta sabihing tinalo natin ang US. Dapat ilagay sa context. Dahil kung ang pinadala nila ay yung mga NBA players dati, well, alam naman natin kung ano ang mangyayari. But still, San Miguel fan ako dati pa at mga paborito kong players dati sila Samboy, Allan Caidic at Hecto Calma. So alam ko talagang may ibubuga ang mga ito.

Hector Ritualo Totoo. Tingnan mo na lang kung sinu-sino ang top 10 pick sa draft every year. Tapos tingnan mo kung ilan ang starters at ilang pa ang nandyan pa sa NBA. Yun nga ang point ko mismo. Oo, magaling kang player kung sa Div. 1 ka naglaro. Pero hindi ibig sabihin nyan uubra ka na sa NBA. For example, si Kobe Paras. Magaling talaga sya kumpara sa PBA players or Filipino college players. Pero maski sa Div 1 hirap makakuha ng playing time. Eh paano pa kaya sa NBA diba?

Ron changed phil basketball to the scientific way but too bad the PROUD ARROGANT PINOY COACHES just wont acknowledge his contributions and schemed on him. Same as what those pinoy coaches are scheming against the great Bald one recently.

I know we should be proud, but we did have 3 imports to win. If we didn't have Chip Engeland di tayo nanalo that night. He hit 10-3 point shots that game. Also, the sad reality was, The US didn't send their best players during the jones cup, this was the B team. I saw this via delayed telecast in '85. My father still has this recorded sa betamax mga tol!

Definitely brought back memories of the National team in the early to mid-80s. Napanood ko pa yan sa haus nun. Pure basketball, wala yung mga yabangan. Pagalingan lang talaga.

That championship games was JONES CUP. way back 1985. i was 16 years old that time. NCC CORP. ang team na yan na pagaari din ni Eduardo "danding" Cojuangco.

With due respect to all Filipinos, the 1985 Philippine team sponsored by San Miguel had 3 or 4 naturalized American players plus an American Coach with dual citizenship... Their first 5 always playing in the court almost continuously are 3 naturalized Americans (Steel, Moore, and Ingeland) and just 2 Filipinos (Caidic and Lim with alternate Calma, Pumaren, Dignadise, or Ituri)... I guess, they can not really take FULL Credit for their back-to-back 1985 ABC & Jones Cup Championship Victories... compared to the 1973 ABC Champion which is all 12 Filipinos without naturalized Imports and a Filipino Coach... That was AMAZING, that I could really salute 100%!

Samboy, Allan, chip, Yves, yturri, pumaren, hector, Dennis, Moore, etc. Ron Jacobs RP team beat powerhouse USA BASKETBALL team! History. It's 2023 now!

Hindi po sya Fil-Am naging Naturalized Filipino player lang sya pero wala syang dugong pinoy, gaya ng ginawa kay Blatche and Douhit. Ganyan din sina jeff Moore and Dennis Still

We need a player that is agile and tall players like Chip, Jeff and Dennis. Filipinos are okay okay justo acting the height , heft and agility at the same time.
