The true story is a lot more cruel and gruesome. The amount of torture Dengler went through is toned down a whole lot for the movie. He and the others had to have been hard as nails to endure what they went through.

Those aren’t fighter jets. In fact they weren’t even made to fight aircraft. That is the AD Skyraider, made specifically for CAS/Close Air Support. They are turboprop powered but not jet powered. Edit: Correction it’s piston driven, not a turboprop.

Yeah, a great big radial engine. Use to watch them take off the flight deck. Didn't need the catapult. So powerful they hurt your ears on takeoff.

This video reminds me of a movie that I watched years ago and the actor was GENE HACKMAN where he was shot down in VIETNAM and how he survived as a full bird 🌽 and how he escaped, excellent movie, it was all about survival in VIETNAM in the jungle

That wasn’t a jet! It was a piston engine airplane called a skyraider , or Douglas A-1 skyraider. It served from 1947 to the early 80’s. Was used in the Korea and Vietnam conflicts.

I mean US forces were well better trained and equipped and managed to outsmart enemy many times in the conflict. Nowadays people like to portray it like if the US soldiers were the weaker ones, but Americans lost 20x less soldiers than their enemies (Vietnam, China, North Korea, Soviets, Laos guerilas etc. So no, Americans did not have problem with lacking wits to outsmart their enemy. They lacked proper reason to fight. War was expensive and not really popular. Ho Chi Minh himself stated it quite clearly around 1946 - "You will kill ten of our men, and we will kill one of yours, and you will quit first". He was quite aware his enemy had better soldiers and was aware he will loose 10 of his own per 1 enemy and was OK with that, knowing that the westerners wont be OK trading 1 of theirs for 10 enemy.

@@felixbui9818They were designed for WW2 and went into service in 1946. WW2 had just ended and they were used in the Korean War (1950's). Yes, they didn't serve in WW2, but the design is a WW2 design. That's why I call it a WW2 plane, its about the period that the aircraft went into service (less than a year after WW2)
