USA: Being Poor in the World's Richest Country

Ойын-сауық

How is it to be homeless in one of the World's Richest Country, where to sleep and what to eat? Poverty is almost the same tragic situation in rich California and the poorest Appalachian region.

In 2022, there were 1.97 million nonprofits operating in the US, including 1.48 million 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, according to the IRS. Some of the major federal, state, and local social welfare programs are: * Supplemental Security Income (SSI) * Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) * Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) * Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), including Pass through Child Support. General Assistance (GA) * 380 thousand churches in the U.S. * food banks and free stores * Who’s hungry in the USA ?

I would like you to Google the National Housing Trust in Jamaica, which started in 1976 with less than 2 million employees. 2% of gross salary deducted from each employee, added to 3% from the government. This 5% have been used to build thousands and thousands of homes for the poor. Also available are, Home Improvement Loans, and build on your own land. For the very, very poor a box like one room on the land which they complete as they can afford. The rich throws away good doors, windows, sinks, etc., so it is easy for them. If a contributor is not eligible for a benefit, they start receiving their refunds, with interest yearly after 10 years. I saw where an announcement was made last year for eligible contributors to start applying on-line for their 2013 refunds. No homelessness in Jamaica. Can anyone imagine what we in the USA could do with such a system, with over 300 million employees?

I think I know who are those who only care about themselves. I often read that the US is helping other countries and because of that you see homelessness in US. please know that this is not true. US is a colonialist power which oppresses nations, not the least the Palestinians by the Z regime. If you believe in justice now you see the big picture. Those Z elites control US. Average yearly wage in the US 50k. That is about $3500 a month take home. Try to pay rent and live on that along with saving for retirement. Then when you go on social security you end up with $1500 to $2000 per month. From that amount you are expected to pay premiums for medicare and supplemental insurance because medicare doesn't pay for dental, vision, hearing, and it doesn't cover all hospitalization cost, meds, etc.

There is a housing system in the small island of Jamaica. Starting in 1976 with a population at the time of under 2 million, the government instituted the National Housing Trust. Every working person pays 2% of gross salary, matched by 3% by the government. This 5% is used to build thousands and thousands of single family homes and apartments for the poor. Also on offer, is build on your own land, starter homes, where the very poor is given a structure, which they complete as they can afford. If you are not eligible for a house, as you already have one, you start receiving your refund with interest, 10 years later. I read where 2013 refunds are now available. Fun Fact--- right along the sea harbor live the poor people, the rich lives in the middle of the city. PS. Can you imagine how many people the USA could house, with over 300 million employees contributing in a Scheme like this?

When Maria, at the beginning, says that if she lost her car and was forced to enter the shelter system she wouldn't... And would just kill herself, then said it was a joke... It wasn't a joke. Most people feel this way. Autonomy is the most important part of identity. Just being forced to live with my family makes me feel worthless. I would rather live in a car if that meant I was able to do things on my own accord. The US is in serious trouble...

Change your location if you don't like yourself worth where you are earning 900 per month. It's all about location when it comes to value. A bottle of water at grocery store is like 50 cents or less, A bottle of water at the theater is like 3 bucks for the same bottle of water, A bottle of water on an aircraft is 7 bucks for the same bottle of water. Location is everything. Unless you live in Germany then your fkd because Germany has a strong economy because of two reasons. "HARD WORK" & "LOW WAGES". If it was not for those 2 reasons then it would not be called Germany, everyone would just call it France.

I think Elvis's idea of constructing these 4 x 4 miniature houses is ingenious. That's really practical. You would think that the city of LA would be more than willing to allocate a section of the city, and even fund this intelligent project, that would make things better for everyone. I think the city should hire him and make him head of dealing with the homeless situation there. Not only is his heart in the right place, but he is certainly intelligent enough to make things much better for everyone! We need more people like this man Elvis! A good man, indeed!

I saw most of what's in this video at least 1-2 years ago. Almost all of it is taken from another video. These are some pretty cold hearted cops and landlords. Evicted after only 5 days WTH. I was a single mother many years ago and things weren't even as bad then as they are now. I had to choose, some months, whether to pay for grocery's or the utility bills. I usually paid just enough on my utilities to keep from getting shut off and used the rest for food. I really feel for some of these mothers with small kids. Just what are they supposed to do? Rents are outrageously high and getting higher. If the rents were fair and reasonably, these people could pay their rents but the landlords are money grubbing pos. Infuriates me to see these high and mighty landlords just waltz through their apartments when they are gone (maybe at work even). So arrogant and entitled because they are well off. The rents must be pretty high there if they can't afford an apartment but they can afford a rent-by-the week motel. They cost a small fortune. I'm no bleeding heart by any means, but when I see this it makes me so angry.

I am seeing my rent go up $300 in just the last 3 years. I'm here to tell you it is not worth what they're asking for, still the cheapest in my town. And it's going to get worse. All these corporations are snatching up these properties, jacking up the rent, and basically forcing people out... damn shame. I feel for the mothers too. But being a landlord doesnt mean you're well off. I was one for several years when I inherited a duplex rental property. The tenants paid their rent to me but much of that went to paying property taxes and other taxes on the property, in addition to the maintenance of the property. I could have raised the rent but I refused to because I wasn't looking to make my fortune or anything, I had simply inherited it and my tenants were senior citizens on fixed incomes. Before I sold it, I was still working full time and it did provide a little bit of extra spending money but not at all like what you think and it came with effort, time, and money. Yes of course there are MANY scummy, greedy slumlords but many are just normal people too.

30:46 is exactly why the opioid problem blew up in rural US. So few doctors, so many people with inadequate or no health insurance. What else can doctors do for an uninsured person's manual labor related back pain besides give them opioids? How are doctors supposed to keep up when they're seeing hundreds of people a day? It was so much easier to just prescribe a small amount of narcotic painkillers because it treated the symptoms and allowed a better quality of life without costing an arm and a leg. Until the DEA screwed it all up, it worked in a fragile "card castle" sort of way. Now the deadly fentanyl is the practically the only opioid available to the poverty stricken masses. People blame the doctors, blame the drug companies, blame the addicts for the fentanyl crisis when the blame can be shared amongst them AND American governmental bodies that cannot seem to fathom a middle of the road approach to anything ever.

Thats so funny how yinz see it from your point of view. MthrFkrs in America have it so good and easy compared to 95+% of the world's other civilian populations, that if we sent them to your country in Africa, they would find themselves in a forever box in less than a month. But you send someone who would kill to sleep in that car from your country which I consider an average African nation state not a Hellhole from some post-apocalyptic horror movie like Haiti is. That person would have their chances of improving their entire life increased by 10 thousand %. In a year they would own 2 cars or 2 SUV's, a 12guage shotgun, 3 handguns, 2 semi-automatic sporterized military assault weapons and maybe a Ruger or Remmington hunting rifle with a scope. A few thousand dollars saved up in the bank for a down payment on a private personally owned townhouse/condo/duplex/single family home. Have 2 jobs and their own personal business doing something, and third side job if they wanted to work for more money that pays more in one day than they would earn in a month working very very hard in Zimbabwe. I can't believe the entire African continent's population has not entered the conga line and waltzed in across the open border to try to better their lives and applied for credit cards, college free tuition and free room and board help with free food (EBT cards), federal help in low interest loans to start a small business. Does everyone in Africa know that the El Norte Gringos have gone bat shit crazy insane and are letting everyone waltz in like I mean everyone and no shit I mean anybody no questions asked or any hassle at all whatsoever or is everyone down there where you are mainly headed to Europe?👀

It's not aid to allies, it's that the wealthy in the US pay no taxes. The poor pay 25% minimum in taxes, that's not counting sales tax which is higher the more "conservative" the area, and other taxes. The middle-income pay more in taxes but get some write-offs. But the rich pay none. That's why we don't have money for the poor, for a social safety net, for a national health service, for Social Security, etc. We're not taxing the rich while in our golden age, when Eisenhower was in office, the top tax rate was 90%.

More and more people join the ranks of the poor every day, while the billionaires continue to get richer and hoard the vast majority of the wealth. Why have we not eaten the rich yet?
