US-Taiwan relations likely to be become factor in upcoming US presidential election

Taiwan will inaugurate a new president on Monday (May 20) just as its most powerful international partner - the United States - is preparing to elect its next leader in about six months. Countering increasing Chinese assertiveness is a priority for both democracies and so the US-Taiwan relationship is likely to be a factor in the forthcoming US election. CNA’s Kate Fisher reports.

    *Facts about the UN Resolution 2758,* which - said that the PRC is the representative of China in the UN system, *- did not say Taiwan is part of China,* - did not say the PRC has jurisdiction over Taiwan, - does not preclude countries from having diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, *- does not prevent Taiwan from having embassies in other countries,* and - does not preclude Taiwan's participation in the UN system.

    There is only 1 China and US suppose to take lead in observing the UNGA resolutions and abiding by the international law and basic norms in internationals relations. There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is an undeniable fact, a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations. One hundred and eight-three countries in the world, including the US, have established and are advancing diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. Resolution 2758 adopted at the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly in 1971 stated in black and white that it “decides to restore all its rights to the People’s Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it.” The resolution made it clear that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, including Taiwan, at the UN; Taiwan is not a country but a part of China’s territory. It makes clear Taiwan’s status as a non-sovereign entity. UNGA Resolution 2758 resolved once and for all politically, legally and procedurally the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, at the UN. The resolution also made clear that there can only be one seat representing China at the UN and precluded the possibility of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” Since the adoption of the resolution, the one-China principle has been observed by the UN and its specialized agencies on the Taiwan question. Taiwan is referred to as “Taiwan, province of China” in all UN’s official documents. It was clearly stated in the official legal opinions of the Office of Legal Affairs of the UN Secretariat that “the United Nations considers ‘Taiwan’ as a province of China with no separate status,” and the “‘authorities’ in ‘Taipei’ are not considered to... enjoy any form of government status.” The Taiwan region’s participation in the activities of international organizations must and can only be handled in accordance with the one-China principle. The United Nations is an intergovernmental international organization composed of sovereign states. Taiwan, a  province of China, has no basis, reason or right to join the UN or its relevant agencies. This is stipulated in the UN Charter and is the principle that all UN member states must follow and an obligation that they should fulfill. USA as a major country and permanent member of the UN Security Council, the US is supposed to take the lead in observing the UNGA resolutions and abiding by the international law and basic norms in international relations, but it does just the opposite. The US deliberately distorted UNGA’s Resolution 2758 and propagated the narrative of so-called “Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system” to hollow out the one-China principle, embolden and support “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, and serve its pernicious aim of suppressing China. Such an attempt to turn back the wheel of history and ignore global opinion will only be resisted and opposed by the international force for justice and will not succeed.

    If Taiwan is a independent country, then why Taiwan was never to step foot inside UN assembly? Even Singapore don't recognize Taiwan... Singapore consistently maintains a "One China" policy and opposes independence for Taiwan. Singapore took this fundamental position even before Singapore established diplomatic relations with the PRC. Just few months ago US Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a speech in Beijing that reiterated America's commitment to the "One China Policy". He also say "We do not support Taiwan independence." America has moved away from supporting #Taiwan independence.

    It's certainty that the day after Taiwan declares independence for whatever reason. China will declare war 100% certainty. No Chinese leader after China's century of humiliation can see the permanent secession of Taiwan from China. One of the big worries is that the people of Taiwan are not being well educated by their leaders on how dangerous the situation in Taiwan can be and how in this very rough and dangerous games of geopolitics and National geopolitics in some ways it's like a game of chess . In a game of chess you easily sacrifice a pawn, if it gives you an advantage, Taiwan is a pawn and Taiwan can be sacrificed. And the people of Taiwan must get to know this because if they don't they'll be sacrificed. And so at the end of the day the best thing we can do on Taiwan is to preserve the status quo. But as you can see with the visits by Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, there are some forces who want to create trouble across Taiwan Straits. And even Thomas L. Friedman of New York Times described her visit as dangerous, reckless, and irresponsible. So the Taiwan question is a dangerous issue and that could start a conflict.

    2024-5-18 Fight breaks out in Taiwanese parliament over chamber reforms. A scuffle broke out in the Taiwanese parliament days before the president-elect, Lai Ching-te, takes office without a legislative majority. There were chaotic scenes as lawmakers shoved, tackled and hit each other in a day-long brawl in Taiwan’s parliament on Friday over a controversial reform bill. Democracy at its best.

    Taiwanese officials are currently not subject to jail for lying. All the opposition parties will try their best to get the bill passed, and the ruling party find ways to block it. 主要是立法規定公務員被立法委員質詢時不可隱瞞或欺騙(國防和外交機密除外),否則會有刑責

Does CNA knows how close the warship is to China's coast? You can actually see the buildings of Xiamen in the distance. Can a Chinese war ship do that off the coast of New York?

    The history of China 🇨🇳 is in many chapters ..to take one chapter to explain ..is to look at it out of context . Taiwan government then was representing the whole of China 🇨🇳 in the United Nations until this right was taken away and given back to mainland China 🇨🇳. So, by logically understanding of this development the Mainland China 🇨🇳 is thus representing Taiwan thereafter, and Taiwan is part of China 🇨🇳 By using its might, the US government is trying to create a base in Taiwan 🇹🇼 until Jimmy Carter recognised that US had too many military involvements everywhere and officially allowed China 🇨🇳 to unite peacefully... So if Taiwan just stop buying weapons and stop US military activities in Taiwan..there is peace ...just confined to commercial activities with the US and we believe President Xi will meet that William Lai ...and all lies will end and there is no more tensions

  • @cklee804
    @cklee80426 күн бұрын

    Taiwan can just make the simple choice ...stop buying weapons and military equipment from the US and not to have any military dealings with the US ... except commercial activities. If this move is initiated and a show of sincerity...then President Xi will be most eager to meet the in coming administrator for Taiwan. There is so much to gain from a good relationship with the mainland ... and so much saving in military expenditure. If this approach is also taken by South Korea with the US ...then North Korea too would likely be eager to have peace with the South , much to the happiness of China 🇨🇳 too ,peace in the Korean peninsula....and peace in the Taiwan Straits . Leaders must have courage and think out of the box for the good of their citizens.

    Compatriots of China and Taiwan on both sides of the Straits should stay vigilant. Now their nation is on its path to rejuvenation. The rise and development of China is leading the community with a shared future for mankind towards a new global order, and this leaves no space for the U.S. hegemony. So the U.S. is doing everything they can to contain the development of China. It has engaged in wars on trade, diplomacy, and finance against China, but all end up in vain. The only card they can play right now is the Taiwan card, because the international community knows that the Chinese mainland regards people in Taiwan as compatriots.

    My simple comment on Taiwan is if nobody shake the status quo , we can keep peace. China and Taiwan had peace for over 50 years primarily because the United States reached an understanding with China called the "One China Policy" it maintained official ties with Beijing and unofficial ties with Taiwan that has kept the peace for over 50 years. If you don't change that there'll be no war on Taiwan. But if the United States pushes for independence of Taiwan which is by the way what some people in the Trump Administration tried to do which is crossing the red line. The United States Government... reiterates that it has no intention of infringing on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity, or interfering in China's internal affairs, or pursuing a policy of 'two chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan'." For some time, the US made those political commitments to China on Taiwan question, which are written down in black and white. Now US has been deliberately ignoring and twisting the history and sending wrong message on Taiwan question. The US has significantly relaxed its restraint on official interactions and reinforced military contact with Taiwan and touted "Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow". It has even been revealed by the media that the US government has a plan for "the destruction of Taiwan". What exactly is the US trying to achieve? The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair. It is at the very core of China's core interests. It is the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not crossed in this relationship. China will never allow any external force to interfere in their internal affairs and it's time that US should stop - stop walking on the edge, stop using the salami tactics, stop pushing the envelope, and stop sowing confusion and trying to mislead the world on Taiwan.

    Taiwan island should not become a powder keg in Asia. It should not become an ATM for US arms dealers. It should not become a runway for Western politicians . Lastly, Taiwan should not become an arena for proxy battlefield. Taiwan's people should not buy into the false promises of Western politicians who will take them from a ride, pledge to back them to the end, and then ultimately abandon them. The West's position may waver, but the mainland's will not.
