US's Unstoppable Tempest Missile - AGM-179 JAGM

Ғылым және технология

The sky over the battlefield was silent except for the rolling rotor blades of the AH-64 Apache following a hostile tank.
Ever since the introduction of the Hellfire, pilots or operators have needed to decide how to engage a target using the two main variants of the legendary missiles at their disposal: the Romeo, laser-guided and deadly precise in clear conditions, or the Longbow, its radar unflinching through smoke and storm.
But after decades of service, the legendary Hellfire missile has a replacement on the way in Lockheed Martin’s AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile.
The JAGM builds upon the Hellfire’s low-cost, high-accuracy legacy by mashing multiple targeting systems into a single weapon.
With the AGM-179 JAGM, the pilots can simply engage targets with the same missile regardless of the environment or situation.
This is the future of warfare, where one missile does it all - no more choices, just swift, precise, and lethal action.

The AH-1x Cobra was the Vietnam era attack helicopter, in fact it was the first of it's kind. The Apache gradually started replacing Cobras in front line units ~1984.

They have been farting around with this weapon since before 2004. Back then it was called Joint Common Missile. In fact, the program was cancelled the weekend of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. It was supposed to be a 3 band system back then: MMW, IR, & Laser seekers. It's been cancelled and restarted about 3 times.

That's what happens when you actually promote competition amongst your military contractors and they're not all being controlled by the government like Russia. Which is why the US always ends up with better weapons. You internet people think cancellation means it was not working, they cancel weapons for literally any reason just like the AGM-183 which was supposedly canceled but is now in active production and operationally ready.

I think they should make that missile upsize with everything about it but with a bigger payload for fixed-wing aircraft something like the AC 130 or bigger helicopters I know they're already have a similar Hellfire for that but I think you could carry a bigger payload with the same components to carry the missile and a longer range and for the Apaches they should make something with a extremely long range compared to what they're using now with a similar payload so they can stay out of short range anti-air missiles

We have around 450 F35s. Around 110 or something F 22s. Remember the F 35 is sold to 17 other nations. Can't wait for the Block 4. I would say we should just give our allies the current generation, and wait. Yet instead of 2026 it will be 2029 before it is ready. If we ever lose to China it is due to our contractors milking us. Instead of 10 billion it will be 16. I'm all for government, but God do they suck.

@chekaschmeka4283 Yes but the US is not at a couple hundred. A couple meaning two. A quick search showed 300 F35 alone delivered to the airforce as of 2021. That doesn't include the Navy or the F22. So saying there's only a couple hundred stealth fighters is pretty far off.

Why isn’t the JAGM as long range as the latest Spike missile? It that really the best they could do to replace the hellfire or just cost effective? The latest Spike is at 50km yet the new JAGM is only 20km? Is it a size difference? I am not sure why the US seems to be falling behind against some countries in missile tech sometimes.

There is always a reason, logistics, parts, cost ect. They make each missle to serve a purpose, not to out-do each other. You also have to take the listed ranges with a grain of salt as they rarely release the real ranges due to classification of tech. On average the US tends to understates it's weapons capabilities unlike Russia who is known to inflate their stats. @@rickjames18

Sounds like this missile could be a game changer for the United States military, interoperability could be a key factor for all operators of the system, however, my only reservation would be the build time for each unit, if it can’t be churned out like “dumb” bombs and missiles then in a major conflict, like the potentially catastrophic tensions in the Middle East could develop into, then the need for a quick build time could be paramount, the Apache etc are useless without the armament to use.
